Chapter 19:

A Quiet Vigil

Melody Of The Last Guardian

Arlen slowly stepped forward, alert to any potential danger, but this time he turned toward Liora. His gaze met her silhouette without words, careful not to approach too closely—every movement measured, sensing her vulnerability. He didn’t fully understand it, yet something about the way she moved, the tension in her posture, stirred a protective instinct deep inside him.

Liora stayed turned away, tense, her heart racing. She didn’t dare look at him; his proximity had already stirred emotions she wasn’t ready to confront. Yet the way his body faced her, the focus in his stance, gave her a sense of safety—not threat, but invisible protection. It was strange how just his presence could make the world feel less overwhelming.

He observed her every motion, how her vilinka form seemed to flow naturally with her energy, how each careful step reflected strength that went beyond what she let others see. The air between them was charged, subtle and intimate. Neither spoke, yet their shared presence alone made the space around them feel sacred, a world existing just for the two of them.

“For the first time, I slept through the night… without worry, without anything waking me,” Liora whispered, her voice barely audible. Her bare feet brushed the earth, drawing energy from the forest, letting it flow gently into her.

Arlen nodded slowly, absorbing her words. “Of course… the forest at night is rarely peaceful,” he murmured, calm but attentive.

She lowered her gaze, letting the tension ease slightly. The quiet around them became gentle, almost comforting. Every small gesture spoke of trust, a bond neither needed to name. Each moment was weighted with significance, the silent communication between them far stronger than words.

“In the forest… it’s different at night,” she continued softly. “Every sound, every breeze, every shadow… it always keeps you on edge.”

“I know,” Arlen replied, still turned away, his voice calm and steady. “But here, with me… you don’t need to be afraid. You’re safe.”

Her lips curved into a faint smile, relief washing over her. “Thank you… truly. I’ve never felt this safe before.”

“I’ll always be here,” he whispered. “So you can breathe freely, undisturbed.”

Her gaze drifted toward the dark forest, contemplative. “How long has Elara been ill?”

“Since I’ve been alone with her,” he murmured, searching for the right words. “No one knows the cause. I’m doing everything I can to ease her… but the reason remains a mystery.”

“That’s why she’s so weak,” Liora said softly, compassion filling her chest.

“Only herbal teas help her feel better for a while,” he added. “Everything else… remains uncertain.”

Her thoughts lingered, soft and troubled. “That’s why you went into the forest…”

“Yes,” he nodded slightly. “And that’s where I met you.”

She paused, face turned away, voice steady yet secretive. “Even though you shouldn’t have…”

“Perhaps… we were meant to meet,” he whispered.

Her heart skipped a beat. “Perhaps…”

Suddenly, voices drifted from the distance. Arlen turned instantly, every sense alert. “Quick, Liora,” he said, calm but determined.

She had no time—she needed to shift back into her human form and dress. Her bare feet touched the ground, the energy of nature assisting her, flowing through her as she directed her power.

In an instant, her vilinka attire faded. She bent to gather her human clothes from the ground, slipping into them with practiced precision—simple, discreet, blending naturally with the surroundings. Her heart still raced, but she readied herself, and Arlen, turned toward the approaching footsteps, remained alert, senses sharp to any sign of danger.

At the last moment, Saira appeared from the bushes. Her gaze drifted toward Liora, who adjusted her clothing, slightly flustered from the quick transformation. A quiet amusement ran through Saira’s thoughts.

“Hmmm… maybe I should’ve turned back?” she murmured to herself.

“She had to shift… to regain her strength,” Arlen said calmly, tone filled with concern.

Saira nodded, still smiling. “Okay, I just thought of something else,” she added teasingly.

Arlen flushed, embarrassed. “Saira… seriously?”

She laughed quietly, then more freely, breaking the tension and adding lightness to the moment. Arlen stayed nearby, awkward but watchful, while Liora observed silently, still catching her breath.

“You should put your shoes back on,” Saira teased, eyes flicking to Liora’s bare feet. “Though I know you feel closer to nature this way…”

“Yes… probably,” Liora murmured quietly, smiling faintly, still flushed from the attention and the sudden awkwardness. The mix of comfort and amusement from Saira’s presence eased her momentarily.

Arlen remained slightly apart, eyes soft on Liora, careful not to intrude, yet acutely aware of the subtle tension.

Saira chuckled lightly at her reaction. “Don’t worry, nothing strange. Just so you’re ready if we need to go somewhere.”

Liora nodded silently, grateful for Arlen’s space and protection, still feeling a faint blush but reassured.

Evening shadows stretched across the cottage. Liora sat on her bed, gazing at the dark forest. Her concern was quiet but persistent—she couldn’t yet protect the other vilinkas. But knowing she was safe brought her a small measure of comfort.

Arlen sat a few meters away, sensing the tension in every breath she drew. He didn’t need to see her face to understand the weight of her worry.

“I worry for them…” she whispered, fragile. “I can’t protect the others…”

Arlen drew in a steady breath, then spoke softly, with a quiet certainty. “I know you’re worried about them. But you… at least you’re safe. And I’ll make sure you stay that way.”

She lowered her gaze, the fear in her chest loosening slightly at his words. She didn’t look at him, but the promise settled deeply within her. She nodded faintly, her heart calming. The safety he offered was strong, though she knew danger still lingered, and she would need to find a way to protect the others soon.

Arlen stayed a few meters off, but the presence of him so close was grounding. He inhaled quietly, taking a small step toward her without invading her space.

“If you want…” he murmured, almost a whisper, “I’ll stay here. All night if necessary. So you know you’re not alone.”

Liora nodded slightly, facing the window, heart quickened by his words. She didn’t meet his eyes, keeping her feelings private, yet the sense of safety and closeness his presence offered filled her with calm.

The night settled softly, moonlight illuminating the bed and surrounding room. Every breath, every quiet sound of the forest reminded them this moment was theirs—a peaceful, intimate time, even as danger lingered outside.

Liora slowly closed her eyes, the comfort of Arlen’s presence surrounding her like an invisible shield. He remained nearby, attentive, calm, a silent guardian of her peace—ready for whatever might come.
