Chapter 30:
Invicta: Lab Life
The piercing wail of an alarm shattered the usual hum of machinery in the control room. Red warning lights flashed in rhythmic pulses, casting long shadows across the sleek metal walls.
Carol sat in the center of the room, her sharp eyes fixed on a large monitor displaying a digital battlefield map—a tangled mess of moving dots, each representing a soldier some red and some green. The screen was meant to track the fight’s progression with the status of each soldier along with a picture of them all atop the screen with color coding, Less being the Red one, but the alarm signified something far more important.
A Kill Dose activation.
Carol’s lips curled into a knowing smirk as she observed the flashing indicator marking Sear’s position. “Finally,” she murmured under her breath, her amusement barely concealed.
A technician, standing nervously at a nearby console, hesitated before speaking. “Ma’am, should we deploy reinforcements? Other units are standing by.”
Carol glanced at him, her expression unreadable, then turned back to the screen.
“No.”
Her voice was firm, laced with quiet authority.
“However, dispatch I1-UU—code name Ignition—to the area. His priority is to retrieve Sear once the battle is over.”
The technician nodded swiftly, relaying the order through his headset.
Carol’s attention remained locked on the monitor, her eyes gleaming with anticipation as the feed showed Sear’s transformation beginning to take shape.
“Let’s see what you become this time.”
“Ral! Apply more pressure on the enemy! Don’t let them pin down Claus and Cara for too long!” James barked the order given to him from Marco, his eyes darting between the screens and the weapon he was frantically repairing.
“This is Alis. I got the maniac.”
James froze. His exhaustion momentarily lifted as a wave of relief swept over him. Two out of three main targets secured.
“That’s great,” he muttered, his eyes locking back onto the screen. But just as he refocused, a faint reflection flickered in the monitor—something behind him.
Instinct took over.
James threw himself sideways just as Pulse’s metal baton came crashing down, obliterating his computer. Sparks shot into the air, the screen shattered, and the glow of data feeds disappeared in an instant.
He scrambled to his feet, heart hammering. Pulse stood before him—target three. Unarmed, outmatched, and unprepared, James knew he had seconds to react.
Then—a glint of metal.
A sword sailed through the air toward him, landing with a clatter at his feet. James snapped his head toward the source—Coco, standing further back, flashing him a thumbs-up.
“Fine.” He exhaled sharply, picking up the weapon. His hands trembled slightly as he raised the blade in front of him, locking eyes with Pulse.
“Do your thing, Coco.”
Marco came crawling up next to Ral and raised his gun.
“Well so you joined the front now uh?” Ral looked surprised
“Well Ral when you don’t do your job i need to do it instead” Marco looked thru his scope catching See in it, his finger squeezed the trigger, one bullet hit her in the shoulder causing her to drop her gun.
She seemingly froze in place. “Move kid” Corp came in and pushed her away before more shots were fired, he took the bullets head on taking three to his chest, he exhaled a heavy breath as he looked down at the blood pouring out, his body armor had done little to nothing. “Ruth” he said as she moved up behind him “Take See back to fallow” at tho’s words he collapsed, Ruth stared for a second at his body before grabbing a hold of see whom screamed as she cried at the sight as she was being pulling to safety by Ruth.
on the opposite side of the battle field Alis towered over Sear, her Exo-suit’s massive mechanical hand gripping his limp body. His head hung low, his breathing slow. His eyes, barely open, were now pitch black.
Alis examined him carefully. “You ready to give up now?”
For a moment, nothing. Then—his head snapped up.
Without warning, Sear twisted violently, yanking himself upward along her arm. The sudden shift in weight made Alis stagger backward. Caught off guard, she swung her other hand—
A mistake.
Her fist slammed into her own Exo-suit, jarring the mechanism and forcing her fingers to release their hold.
Sear hit the ground, landing in a crouch. He flexed his fingers, still regaining control over his body. Then, his gaze locked onto something half-buried in the dirt nearby.
His dagger.
He snatched it up and pressed a hand to his earpiece. “Blackout, get ready to fire in my direction.”
“Already in position,” Blackout’s voice crackled over the comms. “Just make sure you don’t step into my line of fire.”
at that confirmation he turned his back on Alis and sprinted toward Havoc.
Alis lunged after him—but the first sniper bullet hit as she moved out of cover.
She flinched as the shot tore through a weaker metal of her armor. A second round struck, forcing her to raise her arms to shield her cockpit. She cursed under her breath—her reinforced plating covered the hydraulics, but the sniper fire was relentless.
Meanwhile, Sear grinned wildly. The battle raged around him—gunfire, shouting, the deafening whir of machinery. But his mind was only on one thing.
He leaped through the air, crashing onto the back of an enemy Exo-suit. His dagger scraped against the armor, failing to find a weak point. “Damn. Reinforced hydraulics too? Clever.”
The Exo-suit stumbled forward from the impact, toppling near Havoc.
Claus, still standing, wasted no time. He swung his left arm out behind Sear to his left where Cara had stood earlier a massive punch was flying towards Sear, but the he caught it effortlessly, he turned his body and tighten his grip, his Right arm flexed as he held the suit’s wrist with an iron hold.
“Wow. You’re an old man, huh?” Sear smirked, locking eyes with Claus through the suit’s cockpit glass.
Despite the chaos, Claus chuckled. “Beware of an old man in a profession where people die young.”
Then, he dropped his guard.
Bullets rained down on him, but instead of blocking them, he used the moment to swing at Sear again.
Sear caught the punch. holding Claus Right writs with his left hand Sear Bit together his teeth at the power Claus second punch came from the other side.
Sear’s arms were outstretched, as he held onto both of Claus’s Exo-suit arms, his grin unwavering. Claus strained against him, trying to crush him between the suit’s mechanical limbs. But Sear didn’t budge.
His smile never faltered.
