Chapter 44:
Song of Grace
Sara
We were getting closer, and it wouldn’t be long now until we were in the territory of the Peace Bringers. I had laid my plan, and they would soon understand the mistakes our race had made. I had become even more convinced of the role Almerious had to play, and once he saw the truth and understood that forgiveness was within his reach, my cause would triumph.
This would be the turning point I had been waiting for. It had been such a long time since I set out, and despite all the downfalls, I was still walking. Most tribes had been too stubborn to convince, choosing to walk in comfort rather than see the truth. But the Peace Bringers would not deny it once they saw it.
I heard someone walking up to me, and moments later, Cat came up beside me.
“Did you talk to Kim?”
She did not hesitate to bring up what she had on her mind. She was restless, but I could not expect too much from her.
“I did”
“And…?”
“I told her to rejoice. She did a good deed.”
She sighed, and I thought I could hear her murmuring something, but I did not pick up the words.
“But you were supposed to make her feel better”
“We were not put on this earth to cherish others, but to guide them to the righteous path. She does not see it yet, but she will with time.”
She moaned.
“Are you as stupid as you look?”
She halted and turned to me.
“Don’t you see that she needs someone to comfort her. She listens to you.”
“And for that, I am grateful”
“You’re such a stuck-up horse! Who cares about guiding people to the ‘righteous path’ if you have the power to really make them listen to you?”
She kicked a stone and left. Have them listen to me... Isn’t that what we did by virtue of our role? What did she understand about our ancient purpose? Lesser beings would applaud the girl, but we understood our role.
What responsibility did we carry if they would not listen to our words? I had told Kim the truth, and it was not up to me if she understood them. Just as no one else ever saw the truth of my words as I tried to convince them to join my cause. What else would you expect of those lesser than us? Primitive beings with no culture or tradition. All they knew was how to plough their fields. Not even names to their land had they given, and their villages were all known by their geographical location. Only the elves and the Norsemen were different, but the elves were too entangled with their forest to raise a finger for my cause, and the Norsemen never left their land.
We kept walking, but I must have been more distressed about entering the land of Peace Bringers than I thought, because Cat’s words wouldn’t leave my thoughts. You have the power to make them listen to you... Is that not what I had tried to do? Who was she to question the very reason I was walking this path? I could not stir the minds and hearts of the people; they would take my words, or they would disregard them. All I could do was tell them the truth. After all, wasn’t the righteous path the one walked in truth? Would they not see it? Or… I glanced back at the others. Could my words have an impact far beyond what I thought was possible?
