Chapter 1:

The Darkness is Here

The Repeating Simulation

"I hate you...I really hate you so much." He said looking at me with the upmost disgust. I didn't blame him though...I hated me too.

"Sorry..." I said, looking out the window and watching the rain pelt the pane. I didn't have any idea of what time it was but judging from the fact the sun was only now rising slightly, I figured it must be around 5 am.

"You know, this could all be over in an instant. You have that power right there." He pointed towards the desk and I knew what he was pointing towards. In the desk, underneath a bunch of old newspaper was a single tool that could end my existence right now.

"Do you want me to use it?" I asked him.

"Kind of...I have places to be and things to do soon. You still being here is putting a hold on all of my plans." he smiled wickedly, his smile was almost distorted in a way. I thought of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland...the smile matched that cat to the letter.

I walked over to the desk and opened the drawer. At first glance it would seem like a junk jaw, those old newspapers were there showcasing various cases my dad worked on when he was part of the force. I picked one up randomly, it said August 2028, Boy's Murderer Found. It was dad's best case and the one I remember the most...it was that same day dad died from a heart attack while celebrating with us for his cold case finally coming to a close. Poor dad, what would he think if he could see his son now? Disheveled, hair a mess and face bloodied. I looked like hell and I felt like it too.

"Keep digging into the drawer...its waiting right there." the silence was broken by him, his impatience growing. I could see in the corner of my eye his foot tapping. I did keep digging and eventually found it...the metal object that could end it all. My dad's old service pistol.

I pulled out the pistol and looked at its metal image. Heavy...so heavy. It looked like a toy but the weight reminded me it was all too real. It had one bullet left in the chamber and nothing in the magazine. I didn't need to check, I had seen it before.

"What happens when I'm gone from this world?" I asked him. He stood there and rolled his eyes.

"Nothing, no fan fare or a salute for someone like you. Just nothing. I will however enjoy the day much more. Maybe I'll even talk to that one girl you fancy at the cafe. She's quite cute and seems easy to manipulate."

"Leave her alone...please." I snapped at him. His smile faded and his eyes narrowed.

"I can do whatever I want...you can't stop me. Remember that...boy." I felt my cheeks become wet...I had begun crying out of sheer frustration. Did I really want it to end like this? I pulled up the gun and aimed at myself. The weight felt even heavier as if some force was trying to push it down and away from me. I knew that death meant little here...this really wouldn't end me. Or would it? Would me doing this let him in? I looked over at the mirror and saw a sinister smile peer back...

"Make your final choice Alvin..." he said smiling and waiting...
