Chapter 31:
The Master of Heroes
Silence filled the broken world.
Not peaceful silence.
But the heavy, frightening silence that comes before everything changes.
The sky was still torn open. The dimensional gate continued to pulse like a wounded heart. Darkness flowed from it, but slower now, as if something unseen was holding it back.
That something was Kemp.
He floated above the shattered ground, golden light wrapping around him like a quiet flame. The air around him felt different—stable, firm, as if reality itself was leaning on him to stay together.
Ayon stared at him with wide eyes.
Ayon:
“…Kemp?”
Kemp slowly turned his head.
His eyes were glowing gold, but they were still his eyes. There was pain in them. Fear. Determination.
Kemp:
“I’m still here.”
Alir let out a shaky breath and covered her mouth, tears falling freely.
Alir:
“You idiot…”
(crying)
“You scared us…”
Sumit tried to stand again, his legs shaking.
Sumit:
“So you really did it…”
(smiles weakly)
“You’re insane, bro.”
Jirsong clenched his fists.
Jirsong:
“You better survive this.
Or I’ll beat you myself in the afterlife.”
The Serdihun sisters slowly regained consciousness, looking up at Kemp.
Serdihun 1:
“He’s… holding the world together…”
Serdihun 2:
“No…”
(whisper)
“He is the balance now…”
Ajmal remained on his knees, staring in disbelief.
Ajmal:
“A human… standing between a god and reality…”
(voice shaking)
“This defies every law…”
Narkaal hovered in the sky, unmoving.
The massive shadow arm behind him twitched.
Slowly, the god spoke.
Narkaal:
“You chose suffering over erasure.”
Kemp faced him directly.
Kemp:
“I chose people.”
The dark eye behind Narkaal narrowed.
Narkaal:
“You will break.
Humans always do.”
Kemp tightened his grip on his spear.
Kemp:
“Then we’ll break fighting.”
Narkaal raised his hand.
Darkness condensed instantly, forming countless spears of void that filled the sky.
Ayon shouted.
Ayon:
“Everyone—GET BACK!”
The spears fell like rain.
Kemp moved.
He didn’t dodge.
He didn’t run.
He spread his arms.
Golden light erupted outward, forming a massive shield that covered the heroes and the land behind them.
The dark spears struck—
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
Each impact sent shockwaves across the world, but the shield held.
Kemp screamed in pain.
Cracks formed across his golden aura.
Blood dripped from his mouth.
But he didn’t move.
Sumit roared.
Sumit:
“DON’T JUST WATCH!!”
He forced himself up, flames igniting around his arms once more.
Sumit:
“If Kemp’s standing…”
(grits teeth)
“Then so am I!”
Ayon summoned what little wind he could.
Ayon:
“Our magic’s weak… but it’s not gone!”
Jirsong slammed lightning into his body, forcing it to respond.
Jirsong:
“Even gods bleed if you hit hard enough!”
Alir raised her bow, hands trembling.
Alir:
“For Kemp…”
(pause)
“For everyone…”
The Serdihun sisters held hands.
Serdihun 1:
“Our healing won’t reach him…”
Serdihun 2:
“But we can strengthen his will!”
Ajmal struggled to his feet.
Ajmal:
“This is it…”
(voice firm)
“All or nothing.”
Golden symbols flared around Kemp as the heroes’ combined will flowed toward him.
Not power.
Not magic.
Something deeper.
Belief.
Kemp felt it.
Kemp (thinking):
“They’re still here…”
The pain lessened—just a little.
Enough.
Narkaal watched, silent.
Then—
He descended.
The moment his feet touched the air near Kemp, gravity warped violently. The world screamed as space bent around them.
Narkaal stood face to face with Kemp.
Narkaal:
“Human.
Do you know what you are defying?”
Kemp met his gaze.
Kemp:
“Yes.”
Narkaal:
“I am despair given form.
I am rejection.
I am the end of failed worlds.”
Kemp:
“And I’m proof you were wrong.”
For the first time—
Narkaal reacted.
Dark energy exploded from him, slamming into Kemp at point-blank range.
Kemp screamed as his body was hurled across the sky, crashing into the ground miles away.
BOOOOOOM!!!
A massive crater formed.
Alir screamed.
Alir:
“KEMP!!”
Dust filled the air.
The heroes stared in horror.
Slowly—
A golden light rose from the crater.
Kemp staggered out, body shaking, armor cracked, blood covering his chest.
But he was smiling.
Kemp:
“…Still standing.”
Narkaal’s voice darkened.
Narkaal:
“You endure suffering for others.
Why?”
Kemp took a shaky step forward.
Kemp:
“Because someone once did it for me.”
The dark eye trembled.
Narkaal:
“…Lies.”
Kemp:
“No.”
Kemp pointed toward the heroes.
Kemp:
“They taught me.
That even in despair…”
(pause)
“People choose each other.”
Narkaal raised both hands.
The gate behind him roared.
More of his true body pushed through—another massive limb forming, reality screaming in protest.
Ajmal shouted in fear.
Ajmal:
“He’s forcing it through!!
Kemp can’t hold much longer!!”
Kemp felt his strength fading.
Buddhist spoke softly.
Buddhist:
“…Your path ends in death.”
Kemp whispered back.
Kemp:
“Maybe.”
Buddhist:
“…Are you afraid?”
Kemp looked at his friends.
At their broken bodies.
Their unbroken spirits.
Kemp:
“No.”
He raised his spear one final time.
Golden light gathered—not violently, not explosively.
Calm.
Steady.
Human.
Kemp:
“Narkaal.”
The god looked at him.
Kemp:
“You were alone.”
(pause)
“But we are not.”
Kemp drove his spear forward.
Not at Narkaal.
At the space between worlds.
The spear pierced reality itself.
A massive golden fracture spread across the dimensional gate.
CRAAAAACK!!!
Narkaal roared for the first time.
Narkaal:
“NO—!”
The gate began collapsing inward.
The massive shadow limbs screamed as they were dragged back.
The dark eye widened in fury.
The world shook violently.
Kemp screamed as the backlash tore through him.
His light flickered wildly.
Ayon screamed.
Ayon:
“KEMP HOLD ON!!”
Sumit ran forward.
Sumit:
“DON’T YOU DARE DIE NOW!!”
Alir cried.
Alir:
“Please…!”
With a final roar—
Kemp pushed.
The gate shattered.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!
A blinding flash consumed the sky.
Silence followed.
Slowly…
The darkness faded.
The sky closed.
The pressure lifted.
The world breathed again.
Kemp fell from the air.
Ayon caught him just before he hit the ground.
Ayon:
“Kemp!! Stay with us!!”
Kemp’s eyes fluttered open weakly.
Kemp:
“…Did we… win?”
Ajmal laughed through tears.
Ajmal:
“No…”
(smiling)
“You defied a god.”
The heroes stood together, broken but alive.
The world was damaged.
Scarred.
But still standing.
And somewhere beyond reality—
Narkaal watched.
Waiting.
Because humanity had done something impossible.
They had refused to kneel.
