Chapter 18:

Chapter 18: bonds in shadows

Cold geinus: The frozen mind

The morning sun streamed through the large windows of the high school, casting golden streaks across the hallway. Derek moved carefully, his bag slung over one shoulder, but there was a lightness in his step today. Elara was waiting by the lockers, flipping through a notebook, her sharp eyes catching him immediately.

“Morning,” she said, her voice calm but inviting.

“Morning,” Derek replied, forcing a small smile. He felt the weight of yesterday’s events linger but also a strange warmth. Being around someone who didn’t judge him immediately—it was rare.

They walked side by side to the cafeteria, chatting quietly about classes and the strange dynamics of their peers. Derek noticed students stealing glances at him, whispers following his every step. The sympathy from yesterday hadn’t vanished; in fact, it had grown. People approached him, asking if he was okay, offering help carrying books, or just giving nods of understanding. Derek found it strange—he wasn’t used to attention like this, and certainly not kindness.

“So, you really think anyone can trust me?” Derek asked, trying to gauge Elara’s thoughts.

Elara tilted her head, studying him. “I don’t know you yet,” she said honestly, “but people make mistakes. That doesn’t mean they can’t change or deserve a chance.”

Her words hit differently than all the others’. She didn’t pity him. She didn’t fear him. She acknowledged him. Derek nodded, feeling a small spark of hope.

As they navigated the cafeteria, several students came forward. One, a tall boy with a backpack slung low, held out a notebook. “Hey, I heard about…everything. If you need notes or help catching up, I got you.”

Another student, a girl with bright pink streaks in her hair, added, “Yeah, and if anyone gives you trouble, just tell us. We’ve got your back.”

Derek’s eyebrows rose. He wasn’t used to people standing up for him, yet here they were, approaching him willingly. Elara gave a small smirk, clearly amused by the sudden attention.

“You’re popular,” Derek said quietly, not mocking but observing.

“Maybe,” she replied, “or maybe they just see someone who actually deserves it.”

They laughed softly, the tension easing. For the first time in a long while, Derek felt like he could breathe without constantly calculating the next step, the next threat.

During lunch, they found a corner table. Elara shared stories of her own life, small anecdotes that revealed her humor and intelligence. Derek, in turn, cautiously began to open up—not the full truth of his other life, but small pieces of it, hints of the struggles he’d endured and the lessons he’d learned.

“You really keep it together,” Elara said after a pause, her eyes scanning his face. “Even when everything’s falling apart.”

“I have to,” Derek replied. “Doesn’t mean I want to, though.”

She nodded. “I get it. But maybe…maybe you don’t have to do everything alone.”

Derek glanced at her, realizing that trust wasn’t about knowing everything. It was about choosing someone to rely on. And for the first time, he felt the possibility of letting someone in.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, they packed up and walked toward their next classes. Other students whispered, some stopped to greet Derek, while a few lingered with curious, cautious eyes. Derek noticed it all but remained calm. The world wasn’t changing overnight, and danger still lurked—but there was a small island of normalcy here, and Elara was part of it.

“See you later?” she asked as they reached the hallway junction.

“Yeah,” Derek said, a real smile crossing his face. “See you later.”

As he moved on to his next class, he felt a strange mix of emotions—hope, caution, and a quiet determination. Someone like Elara could be dangerous in the sense that she made him vulnerable…yet for the first time, vulnerability didn’t feel like weakness.

And as Derek walked down the bustling corridor, he silently promised himself that he would protect these small bonds. No matter what chaos came from Red Rose, no matter the shadows that threatened his life, he would safeguard the fragile threads of trust and friendship he was beginning to weave—starting with Elara.
