Prologue

I have never been a good inspiration to the youth of this country, and never will be. That’s what my mother always told me. But really, who cares about that?

This was one of many thoughts that briefly filled my head as I made my way down the street. It was a quiet day, like usual, and being the shut in I was, I was glad of it. My social skills had gotten rusty to the point that even a simple “hello” was hard to get out.

I took out a drink, opened it and drank thirstily. Just then out of the corner of my eye I saw a commotion going on a little bit behind me. I couldn’t make out what it was so I turned around and then saw a woman dressed in a suit arguing with a man. It looked like it was getting nasty so I decided to watch for a while.

Wow, she’s only a few years older than me and has a fully functioning job, I thought to myself, unlike me whose spent the last few years of my life doing nothing but playing games, watching anime and getting drunk.

It seemed like the man and woman had finally stopped arguing and so I turned around to continue walking again. I could hear the sound of feet and it seemed the woman was going the same way as me. Then suddenly I heard a shout and heavy footsteps. I turned around and saw the man who she’d been arguing with racing in our direction with a furious look on his face and his arms outstretched. Then I noticed a car coming up the road and suddenly thought: I think he’s going to push her in front of the car!

Wait, maybe this was fate, I would save this beautiful woman from this guy trying to kill her and be rewarded with a long and happy romance…

Without a second of thinking I rushed between them and put my arm out to stop him-

and then felt my flimsy body get thrown into the air, right into the path of the car.

When I came to, I…wait, came to? I thought I got hit by-

“Ryo Kuroki.” a deep voice boomed.

“Huh…?” I looked around, wondering where I was. It was incredibly bright, and I was surrounded by what looked like…clouds? I couldn’t see who was speaking, but he seemed to know my name.

“Hey, uh, where am I? And where are you? Who are you?”

“I am Wulf, the god of the kingdom of Allios.”

As I looked around, I saw a figure slowly coming towards me, and slowly the shape of a large man came into view. He had a stern look on his face and was dressed like someone out of medieval Europe, and he was carrying a huge sword.

“Where am I…and what do you mean god?” I asked as I stared up at the formidable figure.

“Right now, you are in heaven. You were hit by a car at high speed.” said Wulf.

I was in shock and felt my mouth drop open. This was like something from those isekais that I would watch, where someone got killed on earth and reincarnated in a new world. The only thing missing was being hit by a truck rather than a car.

“Oh…right. So…what now?” I asked, still bewildered, “am I gonna get reincarnated somewhere or something?”

“Well that’s why you’re here.” Wulf boomed, “you will be reincarnated in the Kingdom of Allios, a great country with brave men and beautiful women, where nobles and kings still rule…”

“Wow, really?” I smiled. Maybe being hit by the car wasn’t such a bad thing after all. “So am I gonna go and be a knight or something? Bring it on!”

“You’re going to be very important indeed. Someone who can decide the future of the kingdom, someone whose very survival depends on…” Allios said solemnly, “so, go forth and save the Kingdom…”

I was hyped for this. I’d watched countless anime about brave heroes who saved kingdoms from evil monsters, read countless manga where a NEET loser like me had been reincarnated as a brave hero and gone on to romance beautiful princesses and earn untold riches-

“...and be the Princess it needs!” Allios’ voice cut through my thoughts.

“Wait, Princess? Wait, hold on-” I said, panicking, but it was too late.
