Chapter 0:
SUZUKIMU - No Moon Can Shine Without Its Sun
20 Years Ago, The Day Of The Final Battle, Kimura Mirai
“We need to do it. I need to do it. There is no other way,” he said, his face looking like a mess of grime and blood. I looked at him knowing that he would go through with it no matter what. How did it come to this? We had been fighting together for what felt like an eternity together, although in reality it was less than a year. But I never felt closer to anyone but him and now it was all going to end like this? We had trained so hard to get in sync with each other more and more and now it just didn't work? It was absurd.
“I'm sorry,” I said, kneeling on the ground.
“It's not your fault Mirai,“ he answered, turning to me smiling through the mess on his face. His voice and smile always felt reassuring to me, but now it just felt like he was tearing out my heart with it.
I couldn't say anything to him in that moment and so he turned back to face the evil we had spent so much time and effort to defeat. And we were closer than ever, one final blow and we could be free of this curse. But now it seemed it could only be achieved if he sacrificed his own life and I knew he was willing to go that far.
I could only watch as he brought himself into position to cast one final attack upon the evil before us. It should have been a triumphant moment, but now it felt hollow. I barely heard him scream as he used his most powerful attack on the enemy and destroyed it once and for all. My vision was blurry from my tears as I saw him collapse onto the ground just seconds later. I Managed to get up and slowly walk to him. I kneeled besides him as he lay on his back and was still faintly breathing. But I knew that he wasn't going to last much longer.
“Did it work?” he asked with a weak voice.
“It seems that way,” I managed to answer. It didn't feel like it mattered now.
“Then I'm glad.” He replied. I didn't know what to answer. I know what he meant, but at this moment in time I couldn't handle it. He coughed and it did sounded like something was leaving his body in this moment, like the last bit of energy was escaping him. At the same time I noticed someone else approaching us.
“Oh god, what happened?” The person asked. I knew her all too well. It was Sophia, our teacher. She taught us everything we knew and how to fight. But I didn't think she would come here.
“The enery transfer didn't work, but he still attacked. I think he used all his energy and is about to die. I don't know what to do Sophia,” I said as I hugged her as she looked down on Yutos body, who was only faintly breathing at this point.
“I think I know what happened. But we don't have time for explanations now. There is only one thing we can do for him now.” Sophia answered. I looked at her face.
“His body is beyond saving, but we can save his soul in this pendant,” she said as she pulled out a round pendant that looked like a clear crystal.
“And what good would that do? Can we bring him back to live this way later?” I asked in desperation.
“Maybe, but it is risky. We can try to have the soul inhabit another suitable body.”
“Then do it, everything is better than just having him just die,” I cried out in pain. And so Sophia performed the ritual and Yutos soul was transferred into the pendants crystal. It changed its color into a swirling gray that reminded me of the moon, as it most likely was inevitable to do so as a sign that the ritual had worked. To my surprise his body started to disappear before our very eyes. Afterwards Sophia handed me the pendant.
“You will know what to do when the time is right.” Sophia said to me. I didn't understand what she meant by that, but I swore to never let go of the pendant for as long as I lived.
