Chapter 51:

The Wild Blue Yonder

Miracle Miya

"So you can live here until you get on your feet." Gene told Miya as they stood in front of his house. She'd been staying with his family while he'd cleaned out his home for her.
Miya thought the little house looked cute despite the daylight.
"U-um, do you mean... alone?" She asked, looking up to him as he leaned against his truck.
     Gene blushed.
"Yeah see..." He cleared his throat. "I don't think it'd be, er, good for me to live with you... especially when I don't have to. Not that you're bad or anything! I'm just... it wouldn't be proper; I wouldn't be-"
Miya pecked him on the lips and smiled. He stopped talking.
     "I understand."
     Gene smiled.
"D-do you still own the house though?" She asked.
"I pay for it, yeah. But I won't come unless you want me to." He said. "If you want to, you know, make some money... get yourself sorted out... then head out on your ow-"
     "Gene." She interrupted.
He looked down at her. Her milky white complexion had darkened, ever-so-slightly, due to her brief time in Texas. Her amber eyes looked up at him with longing and framed her small round nose well. Her thin lips were drawn in a serious expression.
She wore a simple orange blouse and a pair of loosely fitting jeans; the outfit had belonged to Gene's mother, but she'd been happy to give it to Miya, along with most of her old wardrobe.
Her hair was long and black, and only the tips of it were still blue.
"I appreciate the offer, b-but I have something I need to ask." She said.
She looked up at him. His fair skin was slightly tanned, and he'd had his tousled brown hair cut recently so that he looked like a real flying ace. His barely visible cheekbones were hidden under a thin layer of facial hair that she thought was delightfully scruffy. The slight bump on his nose was cute, and she wanted to run her fingers over it.
The leather of his bomber jacket shone in the sunlight, and in her opinion, he looked much better in jeans than she did.
His hands were strong and firm, and she took hold of them before looking him in the eyes.
"W-why would I want to go anywhere else?"
Gene turned beet red, and Miya smiled.
The endless blue sky stretched above them.

There was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it; don't stop on my account." Said a mature man to the older couple and children that were busy eating cake. He was in his early forties, with black hair that had a few streaks of gray in it. His expression was curious as he left the living room. He hadn't ordered anything online recently. He deduced that it must've been something his wife had purchased.
He opened the door and froze.
     "M-Mukashi?" He said in Japanese.
Mukashi stood outside the door to Sando Il-Sun's condominium.
     Weary gray met warm brown.
"W-we saw you on the news!" Sando said excitedly as he gestured for his brother to step inside. "We tried to get to you in the hospital, but they said we couldn't come in! I hope you got the letters the kids sent you."
Mukashi didn't follow. He was wearing a white button-up and black slacks.
He reached into the back pocket of his pants, then pulled out several envelopes that hadn't been opened and gave them to Sando. His older brother looked down at the letters, confused.
"They're... not open?" He said curiously.
The sounds of delight could be heard inside the house.
     "Sando." Mukashi whispered.
Sando Il-Sun snapped to attention, and saw that his brother was crying.
"I... I told them not to let you see me. I didn't..." His voice faltered; he breathed sharply, then wiped his tears away. "Thank you. For sending me anything. I'll..." He looked down the long hallway leading away from his family. "That's all I wanted to say. Goodbye, Sando."
He started to walk away abruptly.
     "Mukashi."
     He stopped and turned around.
His brother was standing out in the hallway, holding the door open.
"Why don't you come in?" His brother said, smiling. "I'd love to have you."
A few moments later, the Il-Sun brothers walked into Sando's apartment together.
