Chapter 53:
Uncanny Valley
"So aren't you going home?" The nameless surgeon asked as Karaza had no intentions of leaving the bench.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"There's cockroaches in my flat..."
'And the lemons are afraid of it.' That was left unsaid.
"Hmm, tell your landlord then."
"I don't know..." She knew that such cockroaches can't be killed anyway.
"Tell someone from the community warehouse, they'll tell your landlord: they do that all the time."
"But it'll be awkward with my landlord then..."
"...I'll kill it for ya." He offered, getting annoyed a little.
"Nah, don't wanna bother you. You must be tired anyway." She continued the passive surrendering.
"You're pissing me off...You know what? Sleep on the bench then." He said, passive aggressively.
"A proper citizen shouldn't do that.."
"Oh my god!"
He stared her more, she just sat there face in her hands, gazing at the distance. Waiting for problems to solve themselves.
'This is quite unlike her..' He raised an eyebrow. Knowing her he realized she just gonna stay on the bench the whole night.
Normally she would sleep with cockroaches no problem but distressed lemons meant charcoal thrown on everything.
"Well, follow me." He ordered.
"Why?"
"Cause your crashing in my place tonight."
She didn't believe him at first, but when dragged her after returned the medical bag to the hospital she realized he wasn't joking.
His cousin house was deep in a neighborhood she didn't visit before, where identical houses were in a row one after another.
The house itself was a three floors, light brown wood villa. Too big for three people.
Her back was glued to the wall, looking left and right while he opens the door of his floor.
"What are you doing?"
"Making sure no one sees me. Can't risk damaging your honor while you help me." She whispered carefully.
"This is not the dukedom, you said that yourself." He kicked off his shoes, putting them in the shoe cabinet while she slipped inside carefully, giving the outside one last cautious scan.
"Yeah but your family might get mad at you or something."
"They won't."
"But they might and then they'll disown ya and threw ya out, then you gonna lose your job and it'll be over..."
"That would be wild." He didn't know what else to say at the wild imagination.
She looked at the simple entrance which lead to a large room. Her eyes strolled between the medical books and puzzles in the big bookshelf, aside from that there was much else in the room beside the wall closet and the open kitchen at the corner.
Plus the bed.
'I- It's fine...I'll just sleep on the floor.'
He opened a door near the kitchen.
"This is the guest room, there is a separate bathroom too. Get comfy~"
'Oh.' She suddenly felt stupid.
She sat on the bed holding the pajama set he gave her. The miniature lemons rolled on the bed, free from the hexagono keychain.
She gazed at the wall, sitting like a statue while her ears picked water sprinkling from the shower.
'I should've sucked it up and slept with cockroaches and charcoal...What I'm doing here?'
She laid down on the bed, Staring at the empty wall and clear window.
'Being alone with a hot guy who's nice to me...This is bad, I don't wanna think of him in that physical way..'
She closed her eyes, contemplating her heart.
'Shouldn't I fall in love with someone who's been good to me instead on someone who never looked at me?'
Thinking too much wasn't her cup of tea but she had a knack for it.
She dosed off until the lack of movement in the bed alarmed her.
The lemons were gone.
She tip toed out of the room, finding the culprit rolling on the other bed next to him.
The miniature lemons got clawed, quite, careful and with a fuming look toward them.
She glanced fearfully at the man but luckily he was sleeping like a log. Some guilt engulfed her, he looked tried.
But it didn't take too long for her to notice his toned back moving up and down rhythmically, pale broad shoulders follows her eyes lingered.
It was the lemons turn to give her a dirty look now.
"Shut up!" She whispered to them.
She went back to the guest room, caged the lemons with her dress and took a cold shower.
