Chapter 9:
I was just trying to watch fights to stave off boredom, but that didn't last long!
It's a long day of school. Soon enough it finishes, and I make my to the club room.
"Hello."
"Hey Kazu."
"Yo."
'No sign of Tarou, makes sense.'
"So his training has begun."
"Yeah, we probably won't see him as much, but no worries as I'll be a great leader!"
'I wonder where I should go today.'
"Guys...?
...Ignored again..."
"Ah, sorry!"
"Well no matter, Kazu, it's your time to shine, go out there and see if anything happens."
"You got it. See you guys later."
"Cya."
"Hope you stay safe."
...
With that I start my usual walk. First patrolling all around the west side, all the way up until the river.
'Nothing so far, how boring.
...There's got to be a better way.'
Having found nothing, and noticing a café nearby, I decide to go in, buying a bottle of water, resting for a bit before once again teleporting up, going from roof to roof, covering more ground.
...
'I've been searching for so long and still nothing, today might actually be turning out quiet.'
As I think that, I notice far in the distance towards the east something shine brightly, in all sort of colors.
'Huh, weird... But weird enough that it might actually be the start of something.'
...
I rush over as fast as I can, teleporting to a safe hidden spot on one of the roofs when I get close enough.
"That's right, put the money in this special bag, all of it."
'Oh dang, a bank robbery, and another new villain I don't recognize too, is she forcing them? Or...?'
As I think that, I take a quick around, quickly noticing the empty streets.
'Why's this area so empty?'
"Very good, now tie yourself to a desk now."
The moment she says that, lights start appearing and flashing all around her.
I quickly close my eyes at the brightness, before opening them back up moments later.
'Agh, that's bright, but...
...Just like she said, they're doing it. Is she controlling them using that light magic? Hm, that's not too fun... How can I break them out of it?'
It doesn't take me long before I get an idea.
'...I know what wakes me up, a splash of water on my face.'
I teleport down onto the street, behind a wall, trying get a better view inside before choosing one of the guards.
'She's not paying too much attention, might have gotten over confident, let's fix that.'
I open a portal to behind a pillar, near the guard's face, and splash him with the bottle of water that I bought earlier, quickly waking him up.
"WHAT THE?!"
The guard takes a quick look before realizing.
"Wait, WE'RE GETTING ROBBED!"
"What? How'd you wake from my spell?!"
Before she even finished her sentence, the guard, being already near the front desk, rushed over and activated an alarm.
"NO, DON'T DO THAT!"
Suddenly alarms blare, causing the villain to lose focus. Quickly, using that confusion, I proceed to splash a few more guards, waking them up.
'That should do the trick.'
"How could this be? He said it'd be simple!"
'Oh? She has a teammate? Well, doesn't matter now.'
Ping!
The moment the notification sound arrives she turns towards me.
'OH SHI-'
"WHO'S THERE?!"
Quickly I teleport back up to the rooftops, hiding myself.
'Please tell me she doesn't know I'm up here...'
I wait a moment, until she speaks again.
"SHOW YOURSELF."
'Ok, I'm safe again.
Now who messaged me?!'
A message from the club.
"Just wanted to let you guys know, I'm doing HUGE progress :D"
"That's great Tarou!"
"Congrats"
'Of course...'
"Congratulations."
"Thanks! Oh, btw, Gaia mentioned that something might be happening over by the east side, did Shin send anybody there yet?"
"I did send Kazu out, are you near there? Have you called it in? Well Gaia does know about it, so I assume yes."
'Ah, damn.'
"Uh, yeah I did."
"Great job! Well that's about it then, cya tomorrow!"
"Yeah, cya guys, I'll get myself to safety."
'I should probably get on that now.'
I quickly call dispatch.
"Hero dispatch, what's the address?"
"Oh, hey dad."
"Kazu? Why are you calling?
Wait, are you ok? Are you in danger?!"
"Calm down dad."
"ARE YOU SAFE?!"
"Yes, yes, I am, anyway there's a bank robbery going on on the east side, near the highway and river."
"...What are you doing all the way over there?"
'Ah, didn't think of this.'
"I... was just going on a walk, felt like going this way, in any case, I noticed this happening, some sort of light magic that seems to control people? I think?"
"Ah, Light Show, I know of her, thanks! I'll send someone that can take care of that right away. So that's what caused the alarm... Good thing I hadn't sent anyone in yet."
"...So is that it?"
"Yes, get yourself out of there, Echo will be on his way, he'll take care of everything."
"Got it, bye dad."
"Stay safe you hear? STAY SAF-"
I end the call.
'If I don't stop the call now he won't stop. Light Show huh? That's... a name I guess, interesting.
More importantly, I rarely see Echo in action, every time I get to his fights, it's already over, so I'll stick around.'
It doesn't take long until he arrives.
"Hmm? Well, what do we have here? Could it be somebody up to no good?"
"Tsk, they sent someone already? I knew he was useless."
"Oh? And who would that be?"
"Hmph, doesn't matter, you'll just be a pawn of mine now, isn't that right?"
The moment she she says that, lights suddenly appear, flashing. From this new perspective I can more easily notice that it's seemingly emanating from something on her back, though I quickly close my eyes in case it controls me, opening them back up after some time.
"...Ok?"
"Now DANCE for me puppet!"
"Why would I do that? Was that your objective the whole time?"
"What? HOW ARE THE LIGHTS NOT AFFECTING YOU?!"
"Oh, right, they mentioned your powers, they won't work on me though-"
"WHY'S THAT?!"
"Sheesh, no need to scream, I can hear well enough thank you, in fact better than most."
"What?"
"I'm blind, no light will affect me, but you however appear to be hearing just fine, that's good."
"BLIND?! And what are you talking about hearing fo-"
A piercing sound emanates from him, causing both Light Show and me to whince.
"AGH!"
I instinctively make a sound, causing Echo to stop.
"Hm? Are there others around?"
'Damn it, he heard me, I should leave.'
"WHAT WAS THAT INFERNAL NOISE?!"
"With civilians around this might be tough, the bank is fine with their doors closed but...
IF ANY CIVILIANS ARE LISTENING, PLEASE EVACUATE."
"DON'T IGNORE ME!"
"Please, with your magic being nothing against me, you have no power."
"TELL ME!"
"Fine, since you insist, that 'Infernal Noise' as you call it, is the sign that you should surrender. I would suggest you heed it, I doubt you could outrun sound."
'...Maybe I can stay just a little longer.'
"...FINE. You want the money back, am I right?"
"That would be ideal indeed."
"Well I'm placing the bag of money on the floor now. On top of this paper in fact, to properly indicate it, since you're blind and all."
"I appreciate your cooperation, that's also very kind of you."
'Huh, is that...'
"No, no, I should be thanking YOU."
"Oh? And why would that be?"
"For letting me escape of course!"
'A fire rune!'
She jumps into the bag, consuming her whole, just as the fire rune activates.
"What?"
Suddenly, a pillar of fire spews forth from the paper, consuming the bag in it's entirety, turning it into nothing more than ash.
Echo quickly braces himself from the heat, until it finally dies down.
"...She... Escaped?"
'She escaped? How did this...?'
The guards, noticing that Light Show was gone, start coming outside.
"She's gone? Thank you for coming to our rescue! Did you retrieve the money? Where is it?"
"No... I didn't... One of you, tell me what happened."
"Well, she jumped into the bag and then... Fire."
"...Do you know what it looked like?"
"I think it had a purple shine to it, like a glow of some sort, and some sort of symbol on it, never seen anything like it."
"...If that's what I think it might be...
Now, how would she get her hands on something that powerful..."
'First Inferno and now her? This can't be good...
I better get home before I get dragged into something.'
I go from roof to roof, getting a little ways away, before teleporting down to start heading home.
'...Something tells me Gaia is not gonna be happy with this.'
