Chapter 63:
Uncanny Valley
The sea was rough that day, waved crashed hard on the shore violently, something below simmering.
He walked out of the hospital, his shift ended an hour and a half ago, walking towards his smoking buddy in relief as she waved his refills.
"Thank you."
"Anytime."
They ensued their routine in silence, both having a low energy day.
He looked at her, a brunette today with her loved gingerbread dress that she wears from time to time. Smoking her tabaco too slowly like she did when something was on her mind.
'Must be the apiary situation.'
"Hey, do you subscribe to the sins of the father thing?"
"Hmm, what's that?"
"Y'know, if someone's ancestors or people hurt you or your people, is it okay to hate that person?"
He followed her eyes, gaze deep into the smoke raising from between her fingers, blinking slowly. He asked without a motivation to get an answer, just letting his thoughts out.
"I think resentment can't be avoided sometimes. Isn't silly to assume it'll evaporate? Just gotta be reasonable with it."
"Huh." He looked up, blinking at the simple sky.
"You're amazing." He told.
"Not really." She shrugged.
A violent shock wave hit them, like a hammer upon their skulls.
She remembered the radio active tornado but she soon realized a difference.
What followed the shockwave was a rapidly racing heartbeat. She placed a hand over her heart like it was about to rip out of its place, barely able to take a tiny breath to get some oxygen in her system.
As the shock settled down, one kind of excruciation evaporated for another to begin.
They remembered things.
In the shabby flat Ryu turned into his blob form. Resisting internal panic was easier when he felt stronger to protect himself.
As the effect of the shock wave subdued tendrils slowly wrapped around themselves, forming his human form.
"Um.." He cleared his throat to get his roommate's attention.
"Radioactive tsunami, it'll go on its own. Don't mind it." Roxanne supplied. Brief and detached, working on her translation.
He looked outside the window. Unlike the far horizon the thin line of the shore was visible.
"Why everyone is living their life as usual?" He raised an eyebrow.
'If this happened in the past I would've gone crazy.' He blinked away the memories of his early childhood.
"Only people who made a wish or went to the wild can be affected with these phenomenas you silly goose."
"..."
Hearing her own words she stormed out to Natasha's.
"Dang it! My kid!"
He sighed, looking out at the street.
"Who made a wish huh?"
His nameless brother crossed his mind. He turned into his other form again, became invisible, and flew to the general hospital.
Karaza's pupil's widened, black consumed most of her gray orbs. She walked automatically, tensing her muscles as much as she can, afraid that she would fall apart like a fractured vase if she didn't.
With the last bit of her intact sense she pulled the nameless man from his arm. He walked behind her, steps heavy and sluggish. His mind was somewhere else as if he got hypnotized.
Leaning on pure instinct she sat him down on the ground of an alley, back against the wall of a building. He was as limp as fabric but his existing heartbeat wiped the worse case scenario, for now at the very least.
'Don't think, don't remember.' Finally her lunges were able to take a deeper breath.
She snagged her axe from the hexagono and dropped it with her two fellows in his lap before heading to the beach.
Cold expression, half stable physiology and the good old axe.
Behind big rocks of a cliff. She put her foot on a rock in the sand. Picking up and channeling sound waves to run through it.
The flirtation through dense solids like rocks allowed her to parse clearer information from sound waves.
She knew the status of places she never saw or heard from.
Tanitus rang in her ears but she ignored, proceeding.
The tsunami's source in the depths of the sea stirred something dormant, something radioactive. It engulfed the waves and not the other way around, using it as a puppet.
The conclusion came to her instinctively. Like the olden days she silenced thoughts, memories and fears. Mind occupied with the danger ahead.
Her axe returned to its original size. In front of the mad waves she was about to preform a long distance lithotomy.
The ringing in her ears intensified as she redirected a large packet of sound waves through the water.
The liquid medium was a challenge enough, the wave's momentum a cherry on top. She generated double the sound waves, with double the surge. Reaching the kilometers away source of radioactivity.
'Could be an old artifact, could be anything else. As long as it's physical, I can render it to flakes.'
The sound of waves crashing subdued, even though they themselves didn't. Even the ringing melted into silence.
She collected all of her power in one last hit.
Ryu flew invisibly in the empty city, all taking shelter in their homes as the sky threatened with a sand storm.
He spawned tendrils with eyes, spreading in bystreets and alleyways.
A massive shockwave hit. One akin to a death scream.
One tendril caught his brother in an alleyway. He flew off balance to there, still dizzy from the shockwave.
Many invisible tendrils wrapped themselves around the semi conscious man like ropes. He lifted him up and flew back.
Roxy laid unconscious Natasha on the ground of the shabby apartment, she wiped her sweaty forehead and fanned the older sliver haired man.
Ryu opened the window once again, coming with a knocked out Karaza this time.
He wanted to lay his brother on his back like the two woman but Roxy nodded with disapproval. He left him, back leaning against the wall.
"Don't move him, he might die."
Ryu was naturally pale due to the lack of red blood under his skin, but at that moment he looked genuinely sick.
She reviewed the situation while giving the two women minty erasers.
'Natasha was already fainted when I found her and Her...well she went beyond her limits but she'll live. The problem now is...' She looked at the nameless man in confusion.
"Do you know anything about his wish?" She asked.
"He was nameless when I met him." He took a gulp of water before adding.
"Generally he gets transparent when he's upset. Back then he was almost invisible."
"And the floating?"
"He floats when...I don't know how to describe it. He floats when he doesn't have work, or when he isn't hanging with me or some family."
"So, it's not voluntary? Only when he's not connected with others?"
"You can say that..."Ryu looked over him with worry.
"I'm confused." Roxy titled her head, hands on her waist. She opened the logs on her wish scroll but not much appeared.
'Wish so old there's no logs to it.'
"It's probably a badly articulated wish that spiraled into that." Ryu looked down.
"We can't know for sure, it looks very methodical to me. Even when wishes spiral into something else they don't spiral arbitrary. They follow a line, even if such line is a scribble."
"I know." His fingers clutched on his hair in defeat.
"Do something happened that made him wish to erase half his existence?"
Ryu took a heavy breath. Remembering one night at the orphanage, when he woke up for cup of water and heard what president was whispering in the dark kitchen.
"He was there when the 134 street accident happened. I think he lost his mom there too..."
In silent union they tried to decipher the logistics of his wish was, and Ryu came with another question rather than an answer.
"He can't die right? I mean we survived crap ton of those shock waves with the tornado."
"It's not really about the shock waves this time comrade." She touched her neck in confusion.
"You see, a name for humans is very sensitive, it's closely tied to y'all's existence. Without a name others might not even recall that person's existence."
"But I do, people at his work do. His family too."
"But what happens when y'all aren't around him? He probably floats randomly. His existence dependent on whoever around him."
The tilt of her head was unnatural now.
"It's not like anything can be done to fix this. Nothing can undo a wish." His heart sank as he muttered the words.
"And he was looking much better these days.." The frown in his face deepened.
Hand on her mouth she merged her knowledge with the new information.
'If bad memories interfered with his wish which was already interfering with his personhood...'
"Let's go with old reliable then, tell me what does he love."
Ryu dashed out. Coming back with puzzle boxes, old books, some gauze and one childhood toy he wasn't sure about.
He watched as Roxy sniffed the books and puzzles' cardboard boxes.
"They all have happy memories correct?"
"I think? I don't know how he feels about things...but that one..I'm not sure about it." He looked at the crocheted toy, a cute caterpillar and all the veggies it can eat, it was hallow so all the crocheted veggies could fit in it like it eat them.
"Kay, let's start! This one was a gift from you right?" She held the cardboard box, pupils fully disjointed.
"Yeah, what are you gonna do exactly?"
"We'll use smell correlated with pleasant memories to stabilize his existence."
She closed the old box from his nose, then opened a book and smashed it in his face.
"Why you're doing like that?" He screeched, terrified of hurting his brother.
"You thought it'll be a pristine ritual or something? Come on land me a tendril and smash things in his face we ain't got time!"
Ryu took a nervous gulp and did that anyway.
