Chapter 30:
The Yowie Hunt Revival
Nobuto Shiragiku, pen name, Shiruka. This was the man responsible for The Yowie Hunt. Getting his big start in 1997 at Shonen Editor, he was praised for both his writing, and the superhuman pace he completed his work at. However, he grew bored of the "easy to write" novels and wanted to try writing more wittier works. His first was One letter, named for the fact that "One letter" was literally all that was written in the text.
...
Early 1998...
"That's it!? Give me a real story!" Shiruka's editor, Eddy Toro, fumed.
"What? Didn't the title tell you there'd only be "One letter" in the story?" Shiruka stated.
"We're a publishing company, not an internet forum. We're not going to waste money and resources just to call two words a novel."
"But why?"
"Really? If you want to go with this idea so bad, just post it on your blog."
"No, then it won't be special. It needs to be in a book. I'll even take an ebook."
Eddy facepalmed.
"NO!"
"I refuse to write if you don't publish it."
"You're not some bigshot you know, I can just fire you."
"Wait, but I wrote that story about the pirate-"
"No, you did not!"
"So you're implying I'm delusional?"
The editor got up and walked towards Shiruka.
"What would you even do if we published this?"
"Retire off the fortune I'd receive."
"Ok, you're fired."
"APRIL FOOLS!"
The editor was taken aback.
"What the hell!? It's not even April you fool!"
"Oh shit!" Shiruka cried.
He frantically paced around the room until he came up with a solution.
"It was a prank, um my real novel is.. THIS! A small-time writer decides to write a story, however he only writes two words and calls it a story. Then his editor gets mad and fires him, but he ends up writing a story about the events that transpired," Shiruka exclaimed as he put together a sloppy manuscript.
Eddy looked over at the manuscript. "So you're trying to do some meta philosophical short story yes?" he asked.
"That's the intention."
"Fine, I'll give you an ebook. Though it's a FREE ebook on the company website."
And so, Shiruka's short story was published. People clicked on it, he then went back to writing normal stories, and the editor was happy. However, Shiruka still wanted a print copy of One letter.
"Hmm, how can I get One letter a print copy. Just writing a fantastic novel won't do it," Shiruka mumbled as he doodled.
He then looked down at his drawing.
"Hmm, not bad. Hey not bad might just be good enough. Watch out editor. One letter WILL be hitting the bookstore shelves!"
...
A few weeks later, Eddy looked at the current view numbers for One letter. "Hmm, well it's decent, though nothing special."
"It's still better than zero," Shiruka chimed.
"So what are you going to write next?" Eddy asked.
"Well, I can't really think of anything, maybe I'll write a romcom about a guy who tutors some girls and falls in love with them."
"That concept's been done a few times already, how would you shake it up?"
"Why don't you read it and see," Shiruka smiled as he handed over a stack of papers to his editor.
"Hold up, this is a whole damn manga! Shiragiku-san, you can draw?"
"Well, not very well. I also enjoy writing more than drawing," Shiruka chuckled.
"Don't sell yourself short, I think this art is amazing!"
"Alright, since you insist, I'll take your word for it. So what about my story?"
"Six chances at Love? Hmm, the girls ARE cute."
1 year later...
"Say editor, now that my manga's now one of the best selling romcoms of all time, how about we offer a physical copy of the original two-word manuscript for One letter with the final volume release?" Shiruka asked.
"Was this the whole damn reason you wrote that manga? Just so you could get your two-word novel published?" Eddy groaned.
"Yes, bet you didn't expect that did you?"
"Well, I guess since it's being packaged with a volume, and the fact that you're a big shot now means it's alright," Eddy grumbled as he wiped his brow.
Just as promised, One letter received a print copy. The free novel version of the revised One letter story was renamed, One letter: Arguing with the editor, and also received a print copy.
It was thanks to this fame or infamy that Eddy decided to force Shiruka to write the story for a television drama starring a hot popular actor. Naturally furious at the working conditions, Shiruka decided to make the entire story a giant "Fuck you" to Eddy. Thus, The Yowie Hunt was born.
