Chapter 41:

Chapter 39: “The Spare Room”

Welcome Home , Papa

Rurika arrived with one small bag.

It sat at her feet like an apology. A soft fabric duffel, worn at the corners, not heavy enough to suggest a life. Just clothes. A toothbrush. Things chosen quickly, without certainty that they would ever be unpacked.

She stood at the gate of the Nishima house and hesitated.

The house looked ordinary. Clean. Quiet. Warm light behind the curtains. A place where dinner smells lingered and people slept without fear of sudden noise.

It terrified her.

Yui opened the door before she could knock.

“Rurika-chan,” she said gently, as if greeting a guest instead of a child with nowhere else to go. “You must be tired. Come in.”

Rurika bowed instinctively. Too deep. Too fast. “Thank you for… for letting me stay.”

“Of course,” Yui replied. “You don’t need to thank us.”

Kei stood just behind Yui. He smiled, careful not to overwhelm her.

“You’re safe here,” he said.

The words hit harder than she expected. Safe. She nodded quickly, afraid that if she spoke, her voice would break apart.

She stepped inside.

The door closed behind her with a soft click.

The sound made her flinch.

Touko was waiting in the hallway.

She stood with her hands folded neatly, wearing a simple home dress. Her posture was perfect. Her expression calm. Curious, but not intrusive.

“Welcome, Hanabusa-san,” Touko said. Her voice was polite, light, almost cheerful. “I’m Touko Nishima.”

Rurika swallowed. “I know. I mean. We’re classmates.”

Touko smiled. “Yes.”

There was something unsettling about how easily she smiled.

Yui reached for Rurika’s bag. “Let me take that.”

Rurika shook her head quickly. “It’s okay. It’s not heavy.”

Touko stepped forward. “I’ll show you your room.”

Rurika blinked. “Oh. Thank you.”

She followed Touko down the hallway, each step quiet, measured. The house felt too orderly. Nothing out of place. Nothing forgotten.

“This was the spare room,” Touko said as she opened the door. “But I prepared it for you.”

Rurika stepped inside.

The room was simple. A single bed by the window. Clean white sheets. A desk against the wall. A small lamp already plugged in. Curtains drawn just enough to let light through without exposing the inside.

It was perfect.

Too perfect.

“The bed faces east,” Touko continued calmly. “Morning light is good for waking up. The desk is far from the window so you won’t get distracted. The closet is empty. You can arrange it how you like.”

Rurika stared. “You… prepared all this?”

Touko nodded. “I like things to be ready.”

Rurika set her bag down slowly. “Thank you,” she said again, her voice trembling despite herself. “I didn’t expect… this.”

Touko tilted her head slightly. “Did you expect something worse?”

Rurika hesitated. Then nodded.

Touko smiled wider. “Then I’m glad.”

Yui peeked in from the doorway. “Does it look okay, Rurika-chan?”

“Yes,” Rurika said quickly. “It’s really nice.”

Kei stood behind Yui, hands in his pockets, watching quietly. He looked relieved. Grateful.

That made something twist in Rurika’s chest.

Dinner that night was quiet but warm. Yui talked gently, asking simple questions. Kei listened more than he spoke. Touko ate neatly, her movements precise, her attention divided between Rurika and Kei.

Rurika tried to mirror them. Tried to sit straight. Tried to chew quietly. Tried not to look like someone who did not belong.

Afterward, Touko walked her back to the room.

“If you need anything,” Touko said, “you can ask me.”

“Okay,” Rurika replied.

Touko paused at the doorway. Her voice softened.

“We’re sisters now.”

The words settled into the room like dust.

Rurika forced a smile. “Yeah. I guess we are.”

Touko’s eyes lingered on her face for a moment longer than necessary.

“Yes,” she said. “We are.”

She closed the door gently.

Rurika sat on the bed and stared at her bag. She felt exhausted, but sleep did not come easily. The room was quiet, but not empty. It felt watched. Not by eyes. By intention.

Down the hall, Touko returned to her own room.

She opened her diary.

She added one line beneath the last.

She is here.

Touko closed the book and lay down.

Everything was exactly where it should be.
