Chapter 47:

Chapter Forty-Six: The Quiet Between Them

The Lion King: Shadows of Ice

The late afternoon sun painted the Pride Lands in warm gold and fading firelight. On the open field below Pride Rock, the Lion Guard moved like clockwork—paws pounding, claws flashing, voices calling through the chill that crept in with the coming night. Vitani led them, as she always did, her violet eyes sharp with purpose, her voice cutting clear through the wind. And at the edge of the training grounds stood Jitu. Massive and unmoving, his frost-touched frame was a silent pillar against the dying light. His icy blue eyes followed every motion, but offered no sound, no interruption. Where once his presence had loomed like a shadow, now it grounded them—a constant, wordless reassurance.

Rainforest Path – Evening

Vitani walked alone beneath the thick green canopy, her paws brushing against soft moss and wet leaves. The path curled ahead in quiet spirals of mist. She knew it by heart now.At first, she’d told herself she came here to check on him. Convinced herself that it was her duty. Now… now, she didn’t know what to think anymore. Her heart was pounding. Not from fear. Not from exhaustion. But something... foreign and heavy. Her breath caught as the mist parted ahead. There he was—beneath the twisted tree as always. Jitu sat motionless, his thick mane catching the soft orange glow of the sun. His icy blue gaze was half-lidded, peaceful. And somehow… tired. Vitani hesitated at the edge of the clearing. Her paws wouldn’t move. What am I doing here?.She swallowed the flutter in her throat and stepped forward. “Hey, Jitu.” His gaze shifted toward her—steady, unreadable, impossibly quiet. She hated how that silence made her feel like she was the only one exposed. It was maddening. But she kept coming back. “I, uh… I was just taking a walk,” she said, the words clumsy in her mouth. “Thought I’d check on you. In case you were... lonely or something.” No reaction. “I mean, not that you are lonely. You’re probably fine. You always seem fine.” Her ears twitched. “Just figured… maybe you’d like some company.” Jitu didn’t flinch. Didn’t blink. He just watched her. The breeze picked up, tugging the mist in swirling ribbons. She turned slightly. “Or not. That’s fine. I’ll just—” A soundless motion. His paw shifted—just barely. But the gesture was clear: stay. Her breath hitched. Slowly, Vitani stepped closer and sat beside him, careful not to disturb the hush around them. They stared into the mist together, the silence hanging thick between them, but somehow… softer than before. Why her heart race every time she looked at him? What was this—this warmth, this gravity she couldn’t name? “Jitu…” she murmured, barely above a breath. “I don’t get you.” He didn’t respond. But his gaze wasn’t cold. And she didn’t move.

Pride Rock – Sunset

The sky flared in brilliant color as Vitani padded up the slope of Pride Rock. Her steps were slower than usual. Her mind a snarl of unanswered questions and strange, aching tension. Why couldn’t she stop thinking about him? She reached the base of the rock, where her Guard had gathered, lounging and laughing in the growing dusk. “Hey Vitani,” Imara called with a grin. “Back from the misty woods again?”

“Yeah,” added Kasi, eyes glittering with mischief. “You weren’t wrestling a ghost out there?” Shabaha smirked. “Or trying to out-stare a certain ice cat?” Vitani tried to wave them off. “I was on a stroll.” Tazama narrowed her gaze. “You’re walking funny. And you’re all… blushy.”

“I am not!” she snapped, though the heat in her face betrayed her. “Oh ho,” Imara said, nudging Shabaha. “That’s a blush. That’s a real blush.”

“It’s the sunset!” Vitani barked, ears flat. “You're all imagining things.” The Guard erupted into giggles, circling like jackals. “Did he have anything new to say?” Kasi teased. “A full sentence this time?”

“No!” Vitani sputtered. “He didn’t say anything! He… he never does!”

“But you keep going back,” Shabaha said with a grin. Vitani opened her mouth. Closed it.Tried again. “I-It’s not like that,” she muttered. “Oh, she’s stuttering,” Tazama whispered. “Our fearless leader’s, stuttering!”

“Laugh all you want!” Vitani growled, turning sharply. “I’m going for a run!” And she stormed off, tail high and burning with embarrassment. Above, from the overlook, Kiara watched it all unfold with a soft, knowing smile. She leaned into Kovu’s shoulder. “What’d I miss?” he asked.Kiara kept silent as her eyes followed Vitani’s retreating form.
