Chapter 3:

A mean one

Hazel's memories of the Amarok hunt

"Lets get some foresight going." Heather says holding her hand up.

Again her green aurora dances over us. This time the world seems to slow down.

"Thiiiiiiisssssss sshhhhhooooooouuuuld heeeeeelp." Heather says in a slow voice.

"Really? I stood absolutely no freaking chance against that last Amarok. Now you want to joke around?" I hiss.

"Oh lighten up. With this one's bloodlust ain't neither of us missing our shots tonight. I still suggest guided arrows though." Heather grins at the horizon.

Guided arrows are weak though.

I hear a quick patter and the crunching of snow closing in on us. Then the chilling sensation of one wanting me dead. I start to panic a little but a warmer breeze wraps around me and my heart calms. The fog of fear in my head clears. I draw an arrow with a clear intent of bringing this wolf down. It needs to be put to rest and find peace.

I breath mana into the arrow as I let it loose into the night. With a hiss it seeks it's target. I hear the thump of Heather's bow and then the wizz of her arrow fly following were mine is heading. A yelp is heard as we knock our next arrows.

From behind a pine tree a large white wolf with two arrows piercing its back emerges. It snarls at us before diving into some blowing snow. I might have lost sight of him but I know my guided arrows will hit him.

Heather kicks me and I stumble forward. The Amarok runs between us, angry his prey moved. Even with our foresight he is fast. He tries taking a bite out of Heather on the way through.

"Eat this." She growls with an arrow knocked and ready to be loose.

The fire ball of an arrow singes the Amarok's thick white mane as the beast dodges the arrow. I let loose a fire arrow too out of reflex. Mine makes contact though in the back flank.

The wolf growls before charging us again. Our formation is broken as he goes after me. Again my reflexes release a fire arrow for his face. He easily dodges my arrow but is hit by Heather's. Her arrow is lodged at an angle behind his shoulder blade. Dropping the wolf to the ground for a split second. The arrow didn't hit any vitals but it's definitely lodged between the the shoulder blade bone and ribs.

He growls instead of yelping and tries to act as if he can still move that right front leg. His attention is on Heather now after she hurt him.

"Maybe I should kill you first and then toy with the other." A deep menacing voice comes from the wolf.

A shiver runs up my spine and fear starts to creep in again.

"MaYbE I sHouLd  KiLl yOu FiRsT." Heather mocks this fierce wolf.

What are you doing!?

"You b**ch!" He snaps and charges her.

Heather smiles at me. She then rapidly fires off arrows at the wolf as he snaps his teeth at her. He can't land a hit but she landed a few. One in a paw, another in a hip and one in the other flank.

His white coat is now stained with red patches. It also looks as if red and white strands of aurora are coming from his wounds too. The Amarok is also slower.

I release a fire arrow right into his side hitting his vitals. Heather and I try dodging the dying wolf's jaw and claws. Heather got bit in the arm after I got scratched on my arm and side. His spirit finally moves on while hanging onto Heather's arm.

She grabs his snout and pulls his body off of her. The wolf soon completely dissolves into a white aurora and ascends to the sky.

"Rest easy now." Heather says to the sky.

"Now what?" I ask holding onto my wounded arm.

"We patch ourselves up and find the waypoint to go home." Heather smiles at me holding her would also. "You did well."

"Thank you. We wouldn't have made it without your blessing." I say pulling out a healing potion.

Heather already has hers drank and went back to putting pressure on her wound.

"You would have figured something out." She says with a smile.

"Not comforting." I say looking at her with more of a glare.

"Alright alright." Heather giggles. "My bite is almost closed up. How are your scratches?"

"They are about there." I say looking at the fading cuts.

"Good. Lets head out and collect that reward." Says Heather. Then without fail she starts to head farther west.

"Hey." I yell at her.

"Yea?" She turns around.

"Waypoint is this way." I point southeast.

Heather summons a map. An arrow shows where she is and a circle shows the waypoint. "Oh sh*t you're right."

"Yea. I know."

"If it wasn't so cold Rufus would have guided us with no problems." Heather states. Rufus is Heather's fruit bat familiar (fruit bats are also known as a flying fox).

"It's a good thing you have him. How did you get him?" I ask.

"Well this one time I was lost..." Heather tells me the whole story on the way home.

~[Ring]~[Ring]~[Ring]~

I wake from my slumber. My body starts to ache from pulled muscles from not sleeping properly. I lift my head from the pew and look at my arm translator.

James is calling.

"Hello?" I answer sleepily.

"Hey you alright? Matilda sent me a message saying you weren't answering her calls." He starts to explain but I drown out his voice after he said Matilda.

I scroll through my missed calls before messages.

From Matilda: [I need you back at the shop. Now.]

That was thirty minutes ago.

I swear and bolt for the doors. James' voice is heard in the background as I'm running as hard as I can to get to Matilda's shop.
