Chapter 19:
Year's End: A Reflection
Rin, Klein, and Miles were back in the car, still sitting in the parking lot of the bank as they discussed what to do next.
"Well, this is a tough one.", Klein said.
Miles spoke next.
"So, what are we going to do?"
"We've only got one option...", Rin said.
He fiddled with the strap of his wristwatch as he continued.
"A bank heist."
"And how's that going to work? We've got no idea what kind of security they have.", Klein said.
Rin silently listened as he focused on his watch.
"Hell, we don't even know for sure if they have what we're looking for. It's just not possible."
"All we need is some information. Even a basic floor plan would-"
"Not possible without going in there again, and we're not getting far, with that manager guarding the place on high alert."
Looking out the window and at the bank, Rin knew he was right.
"...Then we negotiate with Eva. Give her the bomb and hope it's enough for now."
"Absolutely not. We keep that thing as far away from her as possible."
"But it's useless without the keys. We're not doing anything wrong by just giving it to her."
"Even if she were to accept, how long do you think it'd take for her to find where the other keys are? She already knows about one of them, and all she needs to do is look into your dad's movements to find the others. It's too dangerous."
Rin raised his voice as he desperately tried to sway him.
"Lena's life is at stake here! Does that not matter to you at all?"
"It's not like I want her to die either, but priorities are priorities, and I'm not handing over a deadly weapon to a terrorist."
"Then what are we supposed to do?"
Rin looked out the window after saying that. He tapped his foot over and over again as he racked his brain for a possible solution. It was then a voice came from the back of the car.
"I second the bank heist plan. Because if we just need some information, I think I might have something."
They both turned to see Miles sitting there confidently, one of his arms raised. And in between two of his fingers was the card he picked up from that bank teller's desk.
Klein grabbed it immediately.

They moved to an apartment room for the call.
"Thank you for helping with our investigation."
*Beep*
Klein hung up the phone and moved over to a table with a laptop sitting atop it. Miles and Rin were both already looking at the screen.
On it was a simple floor plan for the bank. The building wasn't that big, only consisting of a large entrance hall and a small number of rooms in the back.
"There's a back entrance, but it's locked from the inside.", Klein said.
"What about the cameras?", Rin asked.
"No good. There aren't many blind spots we can take advantage of."
"Didn't we also get some emails?", Miles asked.
Klein pulled up a different tab, but he didn't seem very hopeful about finding anything. There were thousands of emails and going through each and every one of them would be unreasonable given their time limit.
"Try searching something like... system updates.", Rin said.
Klein typed at his keyboard.
"Nothing."
"How about power supply?"
"Nope."
Rin took the laptop from Klein and started scrolling through the recent emails himself. He looked for anything that could be helpful.
"How about an emp? We cause a blackout and sneak in to steal it.", Miles said.
"They've got backup generators. I'd give it... a minute at most before the lights come back on, so you'd have to sneak in, find the safety deposit box room, drill into the one we want, steal what's inside, and get back out in that short of a time. No way we could pull that off."
The two discussed other potential options in the background as Rin came across something interesting. His eyes repeatedly moved back and forth, reading and then rereading the words he saw to make sure there was no mistake.
"No. The emp works."
Klein and Miles stopped conversing, and both turned their attention to Rin again.
"Didn't you hear me? Getting inside the safety deposit box room in a minute is impossible", Klein said.
"And what if we could get to the safety deposit box room without arousing suspicion before the black out?"
Rin pointed at the email he was reading, and Klein seemed to understand what he was getting at immediately.

*Chatter, chatter*
The volume on the TV was low and staticky. Lena tried her best to stay quieter than it in her little corner so as not to draw any unwanted attention to herself.
For now, Eva's attention was loosely occupied with whatever was playing on the screen, but Lena knew better than anyone how quickly that could change.
Almost as if to prove her right, Eva decided to speak up.
"...I remember you now. You were there when I beat the shit out of Klein."
After a brief silence, Lena felt compelled to look up. And to her horror, she saw Eva turn her head to look at her directly.
"Make me a coffee."
The request came out of nowhere, so Lena figured she'd misheard her.
"...W-What?"
"Make yourself useful and go make me a coffee.", Eva said.
Another brief silence filled the room as Lena looked back at her in disbelief.
"Now."
It was impossible to defy her. With shaky legs, Lena stood up and made her way to the kitchen. Eva watched as she did but soon shifted her gaze back to the television.
Wanting to get this over with as quickly as possible, Lena grabbed a cup and then opened a drawer for the materials she needed. As she did though, a small orange bottle rolled into frame.

*Flash*
Miles sat on a stool with a black backdrop behind him. Klein and Rin were in front of him with a camera.
"Looks good.", Klein said.
"Right. So, what's the plan again?", Miles asked.
"Today, you'll be starting as an intern at the bank in place of this guy."
Rin held up someone's photo.
"And we'll be replacing any photos they might have on file with yours.", he said.
"What? Why me?"
"Because you're the only one who can. The manager's seen both mine and Klein's faces. The only person in there who's seen yours is the bank teller who's helping us."
Rin took another look at the photo before shrugging his arms and continuing.
"And don't worry about the actual guy getting in the way. He's actually scheduled to come in next week, so he won't be walking in on you today."
"Then what's my excuse for coming in early?"
Klein took over the explanation.
"That's the problem. Our basic plan was to get you the safety deposit box room with this disguise, then have you activate the emp and sneak in to spray-paint the camera inside that room."
Klein paused briefly before continuing.
"A minute is more than enough time for that. But if anyone even looks your way for a second, it's over. On top of that, whoever's monitoring the security feeds is bound to notice one of their cameras going out."
"Which means for this work, we'll need some kind of distraction.", Miles said.
The two looked over at Rin. Klein spoke again.
"And just in case the emp doesn't take care of the alarms it'd need to be a really BIG one to cover for them sounding once Miles starts drilling."
Rin still didn't say anything back, so Klein stepped up to him.
"What do you have in mind and how are we getting away with it?"
Despite how damning his silence was, Rin just couldn't bring himself to respond. No matter how he looked at it, he only had one option. But he didn't like it at all.
Little did he know, Lena was facing a similar predicament as her only hope for salvation was made readily apparent to her.
