Chapter 17:

Damn Bich, you live like this?

Percussive Maintenance: Where Do Naughty Robots Go When They Die?

Saigon, District 1 | + 7 | 10.77, 106.6996 | JP81 - 7680

Anh lived in a high rise apartment in District 1, in a way that was legally true without being satisfying. The tower could more accurately be described as 6 1 bedroom apartments stacked on top of each other, connected by a single metal staircase. She lived on the fourth floor where her view showcased the fringes of district 1, where the nearby district 4 and 10 could be seen. The tower that stood proudly among the townhouses of Pasteur street was Anh's apartment.

"It's not much, but make yourself at home."

Kente stepped into the apartment to confirm Anh's statement.

"Kente-sama, Should I log a complaint that Anh's apartment was ransacked while she was detained?"

Anh said nothing as she absently kicked clothes and collections of chibi stuffed cats into corners, and brushed the snacks and wrappers off of the tasteful Japanese Minimalist Chair. Anh's chair was part of an "executive collection" purchased from a catalog thanks to a Saito Employee discount. As were the boxes of unassembled shelves, chairs and a sofa, which had been stacked on top of each other to form a coffee table.

"I will make something to eat, you go get yourself cleaned up."

Anh watched as Kente searched through the cabinets filled with tea, Ramen noodles, and snacks for something substantial, before turning to the fridge. Somewhere between the bacterial cultures and Vietnamese delicacies, he grabbed a few eggs, and put water in the rice cooker.

"Sorry, work and family barely let me visit here. Ohhh shit. My mom." The torn blazer was torn off and landed on the chair she just cleaned as Anh raced to her bedroom disappearing behind the wall obscuring the kitchen. Anh began calling various family and friends as she took her shower, bringing the small cassette with her.

"Missy have you made any progress on potential contacts? " Kente and Missy took the opportunity of Anh preparing herself to prepare their side of the operation.

"Hai, there are at least five contacts who are immediately available and have a positive working relationship with Saito. Shall I list them for you." As Kente conspired with his Haiku in the quiet the steam from the rice cooker and the shower merged into the small room, forming a cloud over the dusky Saigon sky with its small pink and green skyscrapers wrapped around the river.

Just then a knock came on the door. Kente was about to reach for his fire arm, when he caught Anh's stare.

"Its probably Auntie Do checking on me. I'll get it. Anh, wrapped in a towel with wet feet struggled to go as fast as she could without slipping on the linoleum floor.  Kente tried his best not to stare at the young woman opening the door to meet her aunt, while his heart rate went up. First from the sight of Anh's legs, then from her scream.

"Corey what are you doing here? How do you know where I live?" Anh grasped the towel like a shield, unaware her posture started to reveal more of her than she was perhaps comfortable with.

Corey tried his best Asian bow before presenting a Mitsuki Haiku with both hands.

"Um, well I found your Mitsuki Haiku and I figured I should give it back to you." The device smiled and called out to Anh through its speakers. The inaudible signal it emitted was more akin to a cry. "That doesn't explain how the hell you got my address! Who told you where I live?" Corey  who spent the past few hours assuaging his tortured soul in his hostel with weed purchased from expats on the D4 docks stammered.
"Her Haiku told me where she lived. I tried to get my friends to repair, it but they said it might still act funny. Maybe I can stay for a bit and try to help, I can bring you to them if you want?"

Kente grew more irritated and stepped into sight of the door. Corey jolted back.

"Oh shit, you ... um ... Konichiwa, senor, ill be uh, on my way." Corey walked backwards with a bow and nearly tripped on the stairs, before bolting down them.

The Haiku Anh called TeBo smiled with its screen and with its speaker. "Good to see you again, Anh-sempai!" Anh smiled a warm smile as if the one piece of good news finally arrived at her doorstop. Kente's Gold Star Mitsuki Haiku attempted to communicate with the Red Haiku with a courtesy wave and signal ping. The Haiku only smiled and sent inaudible static. Missy attempted to alert the two Saito Employees preparing for a clandestine raid.

"Anh-sama, perhaps you should put the Haiku in diagnostic and repair mode." Anh looked puzzled and asked her Haiku if there was any issues. The screen displayed the red-haired avatar smiling and shrugging. Carefully, Anh's Haiku unit expressed that it was still capable of performing any functions Anh needed it to do. Its likely Anh did not know the proper procedures to do a full diagnostic, Kente didn't think of it, and Missy, being a mere unit of Kente, could not do anything without user authorization.

"We need to move on from this. If we are going to the cafe with subar-" Kente's discussion with Anh was interrupted by Missy, who used her domestic "wife voice."

"I'm sorry to interrupt you dear, but you have an important call from your doctor. For privacy's sake perhaps take it in the car." Anh was shoveling the rice as quickly as possible without giving herself a stomach ache before looking in shock.

"Wait, your married?"

"No, I'm not married, that's just Missy and I's little code system for an important contact." Kente disclosed to the three other ears in the room.

"Ahn - sama, perhaps you should take a minute to take care of TeBo. Its probably running out of power." This seemed to have broke through to Anh, who after taking another gulp of rice took her Haiku to her room to charge. The Haiku known as Tebu, reciting all of the missing calendar activities along the way as well as missed calls.

"Kente-sama, perhaps this is not the space to discuss plan, given that Anh has been already investigated by Saigon authorities." Kente snapped to attention after staring out past the hallway where Anh left. "You think...did you see any signs of tampering or surveillance equipment?" "Scans were performed when first entering the room, however this does not guarantee security. The walls seem to be very thin here, who knows what could be brought over." Kente nodded and when Anh returned, he wordlessly pointed to the door.

"We have an appointment, Anh." Kente handed a paper to Anh which Missy had printed out earlier via attachment.

"Wait District 4! There is no way we are taking the car! We are borrowing my auntie's bike unless you want to get robbed." Kente threw up his hands in resignation as Anh walked out the door.

"Perhaps it would help to read its license number?" Missy suggested.
