Eyes In The Water

"You're discharged.", Nobara says. It is 2PM. The window shines sunlight deep within the room. The atmosphere is calm, pleasant. 

"Okay, thanks for the treatment." 

Nobara pats him on the back. 

"No problem, kiddo."

EPISODE 8

"Hey, Hiacho? Can you hear me?". I walk down the street absentmindedly, my steps uneven and miscalculated. 

"Yeah, I can. How've you been?"

"I should be asking you that!", she says, her tone guilty. "I'm so, so sorry I didn't come visit you after that day, I was just so busy, what with school and prom and all tha-"

"It's okay. You're fine. Water under the bridge that wasn't even there in the first place. Move on.", I say, trying to aim for a 'calm down, it's fine' tone. What comes out sounds like a dying fish. Except fish can't talk, so.

"Are you sure?", she says, sounding even worse, somehow. Which makes me feel even shittier, since all she's done for me since that day - hell, since we met - is help.

"Yes, you're fine. Trust me."

I get to the bridge. "Hey, I'll talk to you when I get back home, okay?"

She gulps, and I have a sinking feeling in my gut that she's either crying or about to cry. 

"O-okay, bye.", she manages, before ending the call. I stare at my phone, my knees feeling weak. Fuck me.

I start crossing the bridge. 

Master does not choose weaklings like you.

I stop abruptly, my face going pale. 

W-what?

I said..

Hundreds of small eyes start appearing in the water underneath the bridge, and then it hits. The main eye comes into view, the circle it emerges from the same as yesterday. 

Master does not choose weaklings like you. This is something that transcends space, time. 

Volume, gravity.

The entirety of discovered, to be discovered and hypothetical mathematics and science.

For this is an emotion. And Master would not choose those who cannot convey that emotion, or, better yet..

..be unable to feel that emotion themselves.

I saw you yesterday. I don't know where, I don't know how. But I did. What do you want from me, you ugly eye?!
