Chapter 10:
A Night is all I need (remake)
Dae and the soldier just stood there, watching as the creature dug itself from the ground. Above them, the moon shifted further into crimson. For a brief second, everyone's attention was drawn to the sky—a mistake. When Dae looked back, the arm was gone. A hole remained.
'Back on back! Now!' he barked.
'Why should I listen to—' The ghoul stood behind the soldier and pierced his chest with long claws. Dae leapt back, tossed a grenade, and dashed behind a boulder—boom! The explosion left the soldier obliterated and the ghoul's body broken, seemingly dead. Dae circled it. 'Damn. What the fuck is that? I must contact—'
'You must contact no one,' came a voice. A woman stood atop a distant boulder—light brown and golden curls, dark skin, golden eyes and a powerful frame. The woman heighted about 1,75m. Although she was built big the feminine appearance had remained and her curves were dangerous. She was went by Rayshel and had pointed two guns at Dae. Dae barely reacted, but when more soldiers revealed themselves, he lowered his gun. 'Well, now you're careful, Warlord,' she smirked. The soldiers froze—Warlord? Dae grinned, stopping at the corpse. (Dae: It's really dead. Good.)
'I'm not surprised you know me. But I know you too… Berserker.' Rayshel leapt down with a loud bam! She carried a massive axe on her back. 'You're really crazy,' Dae muttered. 'You see what's before me, right?' –
'A black body,' she shrugged.
'And are bodies normally black?' –
'Nah. But covered in ash, anything can look black.' Dae pointed at the moon.
'You find that normal?' –
'The red moon? People experiment with shit. Wouldn't surprise me if the sun turned green.'
She raised her axe. Her soldiers aimed. Dae stood calm. (Dae: She's full of killing intent… but none of it is aimed at me.) Rayshel smiled.
'You're called Warlord for a reason.' At once she flexed every muscle in her body and then smashed her axe into the ground—buuummmm. When she pulled it out, the blade dripped blood. She then thrust her hand into the earth and pulled out a ghoul, its head split in two. (Dae: Her strength… and instinct...insane!) Her soldiers stepped back. Only Dae approached. And as he did, Rayshel thrust her arm holding the head towards Dae who rose his eye brows.
'Rayshel, what do you want from me?'
'Mind telling me what that thing is?'
'Ask him yourself,' Dae replied. Rayshel laughed and suddenly shouted:
'Everyone prepare! That ugly thing brought friends. Time for a massacre!' (Dae: I forgot… she's a fight maniac.) Ghouls erupted across the field. These weren't like the others. They carried guns, even grenades, wore old military uniforms glowing faint violet. (Dae: If they were once soldiers… this is bad.) Gunfire burst out. Rayshel tore through enemies, but Dae's voice rang loud:
'Grab your gear and follow me! Don't fight in the open!' Rayshel was mid-slash when another ghoul—a larger one with a sword on his back—burst up beneath her and grabbed her throat, slamming her down—baaaam! She kicked him off, stood, grinning wider.
'Hah! You're strong, you bastard!' She scanned the battlefield. The ghouls were powerful, but emerged in waves. The soldiers still had the numbers. For now. But then she saw some ghouls gather around the sword-wielder. They were different. Too different. Dae hurled grenades and yelled:
'Light!' Everyone turned away. The ghouls didn't. A blinding flash and screech followed. In that moment, Dae made hand signs. Somehow, Rayshel calmed. He jogged toward the rest of the team. She followed, soldiers trailing. They quickly put distance to the ghoul. … One of them jogged beside her, grinning.
'Rayshel, what did he say to pull you out of a fight? You love this shit!' –
'If we stayed, you'd all be dead. And that's a fact. I love fighting, yeah—but I won't sacrifice my people just for fun. At the end of the day, I'm still human.' (Random soldier: Human? You? Damnl no!) She smirked. 'If Dae's right… those things were once soldiers. And this battlefield? It's sacred ground. Where the Legends fought. That bastard with the sword? He must be one of them. We hit the jackpot!' (Random soldier: You're crazy! Where's the jackpot in that?!) – 'Because if I'm right… this just got real fun. Don't worry we we'll meet them again. And then we'll settle it!'
