Chapter 1:

The weakest Arcanist

The greatest summon

"you're so damn weak! You still can't use a single technique! All you do is spam that stupid summon technique!"
Colt stood over me, his nonchalant smirk unchanging, and his yellow pupils filled with mockery.
Whispers spread through the corridors, as the other students began to whisper to watch others in resentment.
Not Colt, but to me.
"Damn! How can someone be so talentless!"
"He really can't even use basic Arcane techniques! Only summon?"
"Yeah, imagine that! He should stop wasting the academy's time. Not everyone can be an Arcanist..."
"1 year and not a single basic technique? Someone so talentless shouldn't be allowed to breathe."
Day, after day. Month after month... I endured. This was the price I had to pay. The price, of being weak.
I bit down on my lip in helpless anger, I knew I couldn't fight back. I had tried it before, after all.
"Tch! Listen here Akida! You had better quit..." Colt leaned in close, his predatory eyes meeting mines."Before I make you."
With those words, he left me.
I watched him walk away, before painfully picking myself off the floor. I gathered the books I had dropped, and directed myself to class.
As I walked through the corridors, the whispers did not cease. However, I was used to this. Ever since I enrolled in the Arcanist academy 1 year ago, and since then it had been hell.
Normally, using basic Arcane techniques was a condition to enroll, but I had been given special preference. Over this year, I could barely use any techniques, besides one.
The summoning technique.
Even then, my summons were far from capable, so that didn't help much.
I entered the spacious classroom, which was already filled with students. Then I found my way to the back of the class, and sat at my place in the corner.
Soon, the teacher began teaching.
The teacher, was a young man, with long powder blue hair. He wore a black suit, with a white trenchcoat. The trenchcoat had cuffs and collars which were blue, as were his tie.
As he spoke, he seemed quite elegant and confident in his speech, and most female students were simply fixed on him.
This was Professor Shinkai Izan, the most loved professor of the Academy. According to some, he was also, the most powerful Arcanist in history.
"Now, as we know, Arcane techniques are of many types. They can be graded in the following way, namely: Basic, Advanced, and Ascended. Basic techniques are simple, and easy to use. However, their effectiveness may not be very high. Advanced magic is a little more difficult, and they aren't easy to master, but they're techniques which are very effective in battle. In the hands of the right user, they can be very effective in battle. However, the final is Ascended techniques..." Professor Izan paused for a short moment, before continuing.
"These techniques are rarely mastered, and their energy costs are extreme. If an Arcanist on the highest level used this skill, it is very rare for that Arcanist to survive. Now, from these techniques, there is a technique which does not follow this grading system, anybody knows?"
The class was silent for a moment, before a girl with dark hair raised her hand.
"Yes, Alina?"
"The summoning technique."
Professor Izan nodded, his blue eyes sparkling.
"Well done, always the bright student aren't you? Hahaha. Well, summoning techniques don't really follow this rule. That's because, summoning does not cost any energy. That is, unless the summon dies. If a summon dies... The only energy would be depleted."
The entire class seemed surprised at his words besides a few. The black haired girl and me, were amongst those few. I had already known this, because being someone with little to no arcane energy, this was the only technique I could use.
A girl with round glasses, and red, curly hair put up her hand.
"Yes, Rita?"
"So... What happens if someone who lacks enough energy tries to summon a high ranked summon?"
"Good question." Professor smiled. "They'll probably die from the backlash."
A dark atmosphere set over the class. Then, a nonchalant looking boy with snow white hair raised his hand.
"Yes, Ren?"
"However, Professor. A high ranked summon would not answer the summon of a weak Arcanist, would they?"
Professor Izan nodded, putting his hands in his trousers pockets.
"Exactly, very rarely would a low ranked Arcanist actually summon a high-ranked summon. As you may know, Summons are graded the same way Arcanists are graded. So they are graded accordingly: basic order, 3rd order, 2nd order, 1st order... The high being 4th order. So, an Arcanist would only be able to summon a summon that is at most, one order above him. Summoning anything above that could lead to backlash."
Another student raised their hand.
"Professor Izan! What is the strongest summon?"
Professor Ivan smiled.
"Interesting question. First I'll ask you all, do you know how summons are formed?"
Alina, a black-haired girl from before, answered."
"When a being with arcane energy dies, that energy which contains their memories, personality and traits sometimes gain form, and gain thereafter gain sentience. That's why summons are also called, memories."
Professor Izan clapped his hands.
"Oh, well done Alina! Correct once again. So those are summons. Now, they greatest summon ever recorded, was made from one of the most powerful Arcanists recorded in history.
He was known... As Barca. His most notable feat was facing, and winning against nearly half a million Arcanists...."
Professor Izan looked at his watch.
"Oh my, time is up! I got quite carried away. Now, you should all get ready and head to the training grounds..." An unreadable smile appeared on his face."I've a surprise for you all... Heheh."
