Chapter 26:
Atop the World's Smallest Stage
When the Creator came to, she was greeted by an unfamiliar ceiling...
Wait, there's no ceiling.
Her eyes fluttered open as she found herself staring at the sky. Not a beautiful blue nor a rainbow-esque one, but a sky of pale white with not a single cloud in sight. And at the apex was a pure white circle. Whether it was the sun or moon, however, she couldn't tell.
"...well, laying down isn't going to solve this mystery," she muttered, languidly pulling herself up, only to notice the ground beneath her feet. It wasn't grass nor dirt nor stone, but some kind of pitch black substance that felt like smooth laminate. Her hands couldn't detect a blip of texture, almost as if there were a thin transparent barrier in-between.
"So... where am I?" she asked aloud. The last thing she remembered was a burst of flames, and then she was here. No matter which direction she looked, the sky and ground seemed to go on endlessly. She couldn't even hear anything, as if all sound had simply vanished.
"Well, I don't think I'm dead, at least." Mana was flowing through her body, still restricted, but more malleable than normal. Also, they say your life flashes before your eyes the moment before you die, and I haven't seen any flashes.
"Then, what do I do now? Microwave!!! Do you know?!?!?" she called out, but received no response. "Well, I expected that. Guess I'll just pick a direction and start walking."
She did just as she said, walking on and on with no end in sight. Seconds passed. Then minutes. Hours? Days? It was impossible to tell. All she had was a rough intuition that she was moving against the ever-static scenery. There wasn't much else she could do anyway. Her mind could go off on random tangents, or she could do unexpected things. It wouldn't change anyth--
"Wah!" Her foot fell into a hole, or at least what she thought was a hole. It looked like it had been swallowed up by the ground, as though she didn't have a foot anymore. Of course, she obviously hadn't lost it; she pulled it back through. However, it was the first time she found something different. Something she noticed.
She got down on her knees, carefully sticking her hand into the hole. As expected, her hand disappeared below the ground. "Interesting..." she smiled, waving it around. From what she could tell, the black substance was a liquid or a gas, one that somehow moved around her skin without touching it. An unusual sensation, but one that sparked a litany of questions in her mind.
What is this black substance?
Is it something I can use?
Why can't I touch it?
Why won't it come out of the ground?
But no matter how many she asked, there was no answer. The only thing she could glean was a slight current heading slightly downward, relatively speaking, from where she was. The one clue that kept the trail hot.
So naturally, she followed it.
She continued onward, occasionally falling into more pits, adjusting the direction when necessary. Yet still, time dragged on. Normally, she would retreat into her thoughts and go off on some random tangent, but the absurdity of the situation kept her enraptured. It was a puzzle she could not solve. She wasn't just missing pieces, but how they looked like. This noticeable gap only seemed to grow as she tried to figure out which path to take.
But she never got that far. Her feet suddenly stopped against her will, rooting her in place. When she finally directed her attention forward, she understood why.
The floor had come to an edge. One step more, and she would've walked right off.
At first, she simply glanced over, curious to see what it was like at the bottom. However, what she saw only spawned more questions. The ground beneath her feet seemed to break off into giant droplets, falling into the endless white. One would think it would disappear as it continued to shrink, but at some point, it stopped, perpetually hanging in midair. It probably hit the ground, but she couldn't shake the feeling something was off, hidden by some horizon.
And because of that, she had an uncontrollable urge to find out what.
She should've known what it mean to fall off that edge, what would happen if she took that one step forward. The alarm bells in her head started ringing even louder than before -- her own body was resisting. But this was the Creator. An eccentric trying to explore between life and death. A person willing to throw her life away just for a hit of excitement. There was nothing that could stop her, because that's who she was.
So, without hesitation, she walked right off the floor.
