Chapter 43:

When the Watcher Descended

The Master of Heroes

The underground chamber shook harder than before.

Small stones fell from the ceiling and splashed into the black pool. Each ripple in the water sent strange reflections across the broken statues. The Echo Chamber felt alive now—awake, alert, afraid.

Kemp felt it in his bones.

Kemp (thinking):
“This place knows we saw the truth.”

Another roar thundered from above.

This time, it was not distant.

It was right there.

Serdihun 2 covered her head.

Serdihun 2:
“It’s coming down!”

George raised his guns, spinning them once before locking them into place.

George:
“Of course it is.”
(pause)
“Nothing ever stays upstairs.”

Sarmon looked calm, but his jaw tightened.

Sarmon:
“The watcher sensed the Echo Chamber.”
(pause)
“That should not be possible.”

Birson frowned.

Birson:
“It sensed Kemp.”
(pause)
“The key always draws the lock.”

Kemp swallowed.

Kemp:
“So it’s my fault again.”

Alir shook her head and stood beside him.

Alir:
“No.”
(pause)
“It chose to come.”
(pause)
“You just exist.”

The ground cracked open near the tunnel entrance.

A huge shadow poured inside the chamber, bending unnaturally as it squeezed through stone.

Then—

It stepped forward.

The watcher revealed itself fully.

It was tall—far taller than any human.

Its body looked like stone and bone mixed together, cracked and glowing from inside with dark red light. Its face had no eyes, only deep hollow pits, and a mouth filled with slow-moving darkness.

Long arms dragged along the ground.

Chains were wrapped around its body—not holding it back, but growing from it.

Serdihun felt her knees weaken.

Serdihun:
“…That thing guards the prison?”

Sarmon nodded slowly.

Sarmon:
“Yes.”
(pause)
“And punishes hope.”

The watcher tilted its head.

Its voice did not come from its mouth.

It came from everywhere.

Watcher:
“THE KEY HAS SPOKEN.”

The Echo Chamber shook violently.

Alir grabbed Birson’s arm.

Alir:
“It knows about Kemp!”

Birson lifted his staff.

Birson:
“Stay behind us.”

George stepped forward instead.

George:
“Hey, rock-face.”
(pause)
“You ever tried bullets?”

He fired.

The shots hit the watcher’s chest.

CLANG.

Sparks flew.

But the bullets fell to the ground, crushed and useless.

George clicked his tongue.

George:
“…Yeah.”
(pause)
“Didn’t think it would work.”

The watcher raised one massive arm.

The air bent.

A wave of pressure slammed into the group.

Kemp and Serdihun 2 were thrown backward.

Alir cried out as she hit the ground.

Serdihun barely stayed standing, grabbing Sarmon’s arm.

Sarmon shouted.

Sarmon:
“Everyone! Move away from the pool!”

The watcher turned its hollow face toward the Echo Chamber.

Watcher:
“TRUTH MUST BE BURIED.”

Dark energy surged toward the pool.

Birson reacted instantly.

Birson:
“No!”

He slammed his staff into the ground.

Golden cracks spread outward, forming a weak barrier around the water.

The energy hit the barrier and exploded.

Light and darkness collided.

The blast threw everyone back.

Kemp hit a statue and slid to the ground.

His vision blurred.

Kemp (thinking):
“…I can’t just watch.”

He clenched his fists again.

This time—

The spark grew brighter.

Not strong.

But steady.

Kemp stood up slowly.

Serdihun 2 noticed.

Serdihun 2:
“Kemp… your hands…”

Light flowed faintly around his fingers.

Kemp took a step forward.

The watcher stopped moving.

Watcher:
“THE KEY WALKS.”

Fear crawled up Kemp’s spine.

But he didn’t stop.

Kemp:
“I’m not your enemy.”

The watcher tilted its head again.

Watcher:
“ALL KEYS BREAK THE CAGE.”

Kemp shook his head.

Kemp:
“Then maybe the cage deserves to break.”

The chamber went silent.

Even the watcher paused.

Alir stared at Kemp in shock.

Alir:
“Kemp…”

Serdihun whispered.

Serdihun:
“…He’s not afraid.”

George smiled slightly.

George:
“Damn.”
(pause)
“I like this kid.”

The watcher moved again, stepping closer.

Each step cracked the stone floor.

Watcher:
“KEY MUST BE ERASED.”

It raised its arm high.

Dark energy gathered.

Sarmon shouted.

Sarmon:
“Kemp! Get back!”

Birson ran forward.

Birson:
“We’ll handle this!”

But Kemp stayed.

He lifted his glowing hand and pressed it against his chest.

Kemp:
“You said I’m a bridge.”
(pause)
“Then let me connect.”

The light around him pulsed.

The Echo Chamber reacted.

The pool of black water began to glow faintly—not black anymore, but silver.

The watcher hesitated.

Watcher:
“ERROR.”

Serdihun 2 gasped.

Serdihun 2:
“It’s confused!”

Sarmon’s eyes widened.

Sarmon:
“The chamber is responding to him!”

Kemp felt pain surge through his body.

Like being pulled in opposite directions.

He screamed.

Kemp:
“AHH—!”

Alir ran toward him.

Alir:
“Kemp, stop!”

Birson grabbed her.

Birson:
“If he stops now…”
(pause)
“…the watcher will kill him.”

The watcher roared in anger.

Dark chains shot out from its body, flying toward Kemp.

Sarmon and Birson jumped forward together.

Sarmon sliced through the chains.

Birson burned them away with golden light.

George fired again—not at the watcher, but at the ceiling.

The shot shattered a support pillar.

Rocks fell, blocking part of the watcher’s path.

George:
“Buy him time!”

Serdihun stood beside Kemp despite the danger.

Serdihun:
“You’re not alone.”

Serdihun 2 joined her.

Serdihun 2:
“We’re here.”

Kemp opened his eyes.

The pain was still there.

But so was warmth.

Connection.

The pool exploded with light.

Images burst into the air.

Prisoners.

Survivors.

Hidden paths.

Seals weakening.

The watcher screamed.

Watcher:
“THE PRISON IS FAILING!”

The chamber began to collapse.

Sarmon shouted.

Sarmon:
“We have what we need!”
(pause)
“RUN!”

Birson grabbed Alir.

George grabbed Serdihun 2.

Sarmon pulled Serdihun.

They ran.

Kemp stumbled, almost falling.

The watcher reached for him.

At the last second—

A hand grabbed his.

Birson.

Birson:
“Move!”

They escaped into another tunnel just as the Echo Chamber collapsed behind them.

Stone buried the watcher’s roar.

Silence followed.

They ran until their lungs burned.

Finally, they stopped in a narrow passage far away.

Everyone collapsed to the ground.

Breathing.

Alive.

Serdihun looked at Kemp.

Serdihun:
“You did it…”

Kemp shook his head weakly.

Kemp:
“…No.”
(pause)
“We did.”

George laughed quietly.

George:
“You just made the prison angry.”

Birson smiled slightly.

Birson:
“And afraid.”

Sarmon looked serious.

Sarmon:
“That was only the beginning.”

Alir squeezed Kemp’s hand.

Alir:
“Then we’ll face the rest together.”

Far away—

Beyond the seals—

Narkaal clenched his fist.

Narkaal:
“The key has awakened.”

The prison world trembled again.

But this time—

Not in anger.

In warning.
