Chapter 14:

Project H-04

Story of My Life: Revenge or Love?

The room was silent except for the soft hum of the laptop.
Shiromi sat in front of the screen, her reflection faintly visible in the dark glass.Hayato stood beside her, arms crossed, tension carved into his posture.
Slowly, she clicked the file.

"PROJECT H-04 — SUBJECT STATUS UPDATE"

The document opened.
Lines of classified text filled the screen.
"Project H-04 was created to identify children with abnormal physical and mental adaptability. Subjects displaying survival, strength, or resilience beyond human limits were selected for observation."
Shiromi’s breath hitched.
“Children…?” she whispered.
Hayato read on, his face draining of color.
"Subject 4 showed the highest potential. Rapid muscle growth. Pain suppression. Unusual recovery speed."
Shiromi's hands trembled.
That… described her.
Every injury that healed too fast.Every time her body endured what it shouldn’t have.
“…They were watching me,” she said softly. “Before my family died.”
Hayato scrolled.
"The Yano family volunteered to host Subject 4 under the condition that her identity remain secret."
Shiromi felt something crack inside her.
“My parents… knew?”
Not monsters.Not traitors.
Just desperate people protecting their child.
The next line shattered her.
"Termination of the Yano family was approved after signs of emotional attachment were judged to be interfering with subject development."
Hayato slammed his fist into the desk.“They ordered it… because they loved you.”
Shiromi couldn’t breathe.
The murders.The fire.Her brother’s screams.
It wasn’t revenge.
It was "an experiment".
Tears fell silently down her cheeks — not of weakness, but of rage so deep it burned.
“Then the survivor…” she whispered.
A new page opened automatically.
A single name appeared.
"SUBJECT 1 — STATUS: ACTIVE"
Under it:
Hayato’s father.
Hayato staggered back.“No… he was part of it?”

Shiromi stared at the screen, eyes empty.

“He wasn’t just part of it,” she said.“He was the one who didn’t break.”
She closed the laptop slowly.
“They made us into weapons. They killed my family. They ruined yours.”
She looked at Hayato — not with hate, but with a terrifying calm.
“And now the last subject is hunting the others.”
Hayato swallowed. “Then what are we supposed to do?”
Shiromi stood up.
For the first time, her muscles didn’t feel like tools.
They felt like a promise.
“We end Project H-04.”
Together!
