Chapter 11:
Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen
A week had passsed since the shopping spree, and Airi went to school again. It was now the first Friday of July and Airi was wearing her new shoes, which she had bought that Saturday. It had been rainy for the rest of the week so she didn't want to wear them and get them dirty but on this Friday it was sunny again.
The morning air felt fresh and still smelled a little like the rain from the previous days. As she walked, she thought about the past week and about the plan she made to become friends with Ren. She wasn't ready until today, she thought while putting her hand on her chest to calm herself down a bit. "I can do it," she thought.
It was also a normal day for Ren as he got woken up by his little sister, the self-proclaimed cutest sister in the world, and went to school, the same time as always.
"It's always the same with you Ren, you're always on time, haha" Haruto remarked.
Then they went together to school, as always, and arrived ten minutes before the start of the first lesson, as always.
Meanwhile, Airi met with Hana and went to school with her too. They arrived fifteen minutes before the start of the first lesson. It was a completely normal day for both of them until the last lesson before lunch break.
Ten minutes before the bell for the lunch break rang, Airi and Ren had the task to collect some donations from the students and their parents for the maid café the class was preparing for the summer festival. They needed the money to buy some materials and other stuff that they couldn't make on their own or didn't have. As they were finished, Mister Tanaka, with whom the class had at the moment, said: "Okay class. Thank you for your attention and that you all donated something. And thanks to you two Fujimoto-san and Sato-san that you sacrificed your time for the class and the summer festival. The bell will ring soon so have a nice lunch break everyone."
And with that, the bell rang and everyone searched for their lunch or instantly left the classroom to go to the cafeteria. Of course a modern school like the Midoridai High had to have a cafeteria but everyone had to pay for their food, if they wanted some.
Airi searched for her lunch as her friends came to her.
"Hey, Airi-chan! Do you want to come with us to the cafeteria and eat our lunch together?"
"Uhmm, no, sorry. Not today. I want to eat here in the classroom alone. But I hope you all have a nice break and tasty lunch." Airi said and tried not to pay any more attention to them as needed.
"Okay, if you want? It's a shame you don't want to come with us but have a nice break as well Airi-chan." The friends said and went out of the classroom and into the direction of the stairs to go downstairs to the cafeteria.
After they left, Airi stood up from her chair, took her boxed lunch and went into Ren's direction. Then she placed her boxed lunch on the desk next to Ren's and took the desk in front of Ren and placed it right in front of him. She turned around the chair and took her boxed lunch again and sat herself down in front of Ren. Ren was totally taken aback by her actions and couldn't say anything at first.
Then he began to say: "What are you doing?"
"I put this desk in front of yours and turned the chair around, didn't I?" Airi answered Ren with a smile on her face.
"Y-yes, I can see that but why did you do that?" Ren followed up.
"Because I wanted to eat my lunch with a friend of mine. Or are we not friends?" Airi had to put all of her courage together to say this but it worked. She was really nervous about how Ren would react to this because it came so sudden and Ren finds it difficult to make new friends and let them into his life. But even though he seemed taken aback again by her comment, he answered in Airi's favour.
"Urmm, yes, I think so."
As Ren stuttered these words to Airi, she was feeling really happy. She had a really hard time to control her feelings to not freak out right in front of him out of excitement and happiness.
Now she felt really glad and proud of herself for saying that they were friends even though she didn't know it.
"So, how are you Sato-san? Or can I call you Sato-kun now?" Airi asked him.
"Urm, I have to say I'm a little confused and taken aback by all this but I'm fine, I guess. I don't mind what you call me. Call me as you want Fujimoto-san." Ren answered.
"Haha, so Sato-kun it is then. I'm looking forward to a great friendship Sa-to-kun." Airi spoke Ren's name slowly and gently, emphasizing each syllable.
"Ermm. yeah, me too, haha." Ren was really flustered and didn't really know how to respond so he only said the bare minimum.
He took out his boxed lunch as well and then they both opened their boxed lunches and looked at what the other had. Airi's mother prepared her a special sushi boxed lunch with the best and most expensive ingredients the family had—for example caviar as a topping. Ren on the other hand had made himself some rice balls and curry dip to go with them.
"Woah, what is that? Are you rich or something?" Ren asked in disbelief after he saw Airi's boxed lunch.
"Hehe, my mother made it for me. She always uses the best ingredients for me. And to answer your other question, you could say that we are wealthy, yes." Airi answered
"Oh, I didn't know that."
"What do you know about your classmates Sato-kun?"
"Not much, haha"
"Yeah, I thought so. Where is Kanda-san, actually?"
"He's eating with his other friends again."
"So it's pretty convenient for you, that I want to eat my lunch with you right Sato-kun?"
"You could say so, I guess, but I didn't ask you to do that and first of all, why do you even want to be friends with me?"
"Why not? You're very handsome and easy to talk to if you wouldn't be so introverted." Airi answered with all her heart.
"I hope you don't lie to me." Ren then said and began eating his rice balls.
"I'm not!" Airi responded indignantly to Ren's accusation. "I'm not lying to you! Why should I? I don't have many friends as well!" Airi started tearing up a little as she yelled at Ren. She was very emotional at sometimes.
She sobbed. "I'm terribly sorry I yelled at you" Airi said while Ren was totally taken aback now. Airi bowed her head and looked at the desk and covered her face with her hands.
"I don't know what to say. Are you okay Fujimoto-san?" Ren said and then tried to touch her hand to calm her down but hesitated and gave up in the end.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She answered and looked at Ren, then down at the desk again.
"Hey, if you're not feeling well, I can bring you to the nurse office. I'm not mad or anything that you yelled at me but I'm worried that you might feel unwell."
"Why would I? I was only too emotional, nothing else."
"I'm sorry I accused you of lying Fujimoto-san." Ren said and now as well bowed his head so he faced his desk.
"No, I understand you! You were being toyed with a long time ago and that left scars on you so it's my fault to overreact to something like this."
"If you think so? Can I give you something from my lunch and you give me something from yours so we're all good again?" Ren asked, his stomach growling.
"Oh, yes, if that's enough." Airi looked happy again and gave Ren one sushi roll with the caviar topping. Not in his mouth but she put it on his lunch box while Ren did the same with his rice balls. He picked one rice ball and dipped it into the curry. Then he wanted to place it onto Airi's lunch box but she was faster and grabbed it in the air and said: "That's fine, I have it now."
Then they both tried the others boxed lunch and both were amazed by its taste.
"It's delicious!" They both said at the same time.
It all was good again and they both ate their lunch. As they did, they also talked about their favourite food and came to their activities while eating at home.
"Do you eat in your room or in the living room?" Airi asked.
"When my parents aren't home, I prefer to eat in my room because I then can watch the anime I like or my favourite live streamer."
"Ohh, who is your favourite live streamer?" Airi asked curious.
"I love watching HikariAi. She's soo funny and I love her gameplay. It's very interesting and good to watch. Sometimes I watch her realtalk streams as well and they're really interesting because you can really dive into her life."
Airi's heart skipped a beat. What did he say? He loves HikariAi? So basically Ren loves Airi? Airi thought she was dreaming but she couldn't really say anything. What would happen if he finds out that she's his favourite streamer? Would he tell it the whole school? Or would he start hating her? There were so many thoughts in Airi's head that she forgot to say something in response.
"Fujimoto-san? Fuijimoto-san, are you okay?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah, of course!"
"It seemed like you were in a whole other dimension."
"I probably was, haha" Airi said humorously.
"Okay, haha." Ren retorted with a slight laughter.
"Could it be that you know her as well? I recognized that you used her same greeting when we met once." Ren followed up with a question.
Now Airi was taken aback. Did he notice it anyway? Did she give him too much clues so he could easily figure it out that she was HikariAi? "No, it can't be," she thought and pretended she had never heard of this streamer before.
"N-no, I-I don't know her. Is she famous?"
"Of course, she has over eighty thousand followers!"
"Oh, that's a bunch of follower. But I think I never heard of her before, I'm sorry Sato-kun. I guess I picked her greeting somewhere else up and coincidentally used it in front of you." That was her excuse and Ren believed it. Airi was feeling bad because she lied to Ren even though she said she would never do so but she didn't want to tell him her secret identity as well. At least not yet.
"Oh, that's a shame. I can only recommend her to you." Ren responded.
Even though the lunch break was an hour long, the time flew by and with finishing their meal together, the school bell rang for the first time to tell everybody to go to the classrooms again after lunch. Airi had to be quick and closed her lunch box and turned desk and chair around again to its old position. Then she went back to her desk and sat down like nothing happened over lunch break.
Ren was feeling a bit warm the whole time. He had fun. "If this is going to continue?" He thought.
Everybody came back from lunch and, within seconds, the whole classroom was full of students again.
"Hey, how was your lunch break Ren?" Haruto asked as he went to his desk right next to Ren's.
"Pretty good." Ren answered.
"That really sounds good. Something good happened to you?"
"You could say it was more like unexpected but also somewhat good."
"Ohhh, you have to tell me about it after school, please." Haruto begged.
"Okay, fine." Ren said happily.
At the same time, Airi got asked as well from her friends.
"Hey, Ai-chan! So what did you do the whole lunch break?" Reina Kurusawa asked. You could say she was the leader of the girls group around Airi.
"Nothing." Airi replied dryly.
"Hmm, okay. I guess being alone with Sato-san, there's nothing you could do right?" Reina laughed and the girls around her started as well.
Airi wanted to tell her the difference but couldn't and with that, the next lesson began and the school day was over in no time.
