Chapter 24:

EP 24: Decision Without Consensus

To Kill The Dead

They didn’t sleep.

They sat in the darkened briefing room with the lights off, weapons close, nerves stretched thin. The police station creaked around them like it remembered better days and hated them for being alive.

Kanata checked his gear again. Slow. Careful. Too calm.

Kanami noticed.

She always did.

“You’re planning something,” she said quietly.

He didn’t look up. “I’m thinking.”

Serizawa scoffed from across the room. “That’s worse.”

Godou fumbled with a protein bar, tore the wrapper too hard, and sighed. “Great. End-of-the-world tension and hunger.”

Koko leaned against Kanami, half asleep, thumb in her mouth.

Takiya watched Kanata without blinking.

When the generator coughed and died, the room dropped into full darkness.

Kanata stood.

He slung the duffel over his shoulder and headed for the exit.

Kanami was on her feet instantly. “Kanata. What are you doing?”

“Scouting,” he said. “I’ll find a safe place. Somewhere defensible. Somewhere real.”

Serizawa’s laugh was sharp. “You mean somewhere you decide?”

“Yes.”

That answer hit harder than any argument.

Takiya stepped forward. “I’m coming.”

Kanata finally turned to her. His eyes were steady. Tired. Unmovable.

“No.”

Her jaw tightened. “You don’t get to decide that.”

“I do tonight.”

The space between them felt charged. Close. Too close. Her hand twitched near his sleeve.

“You leave alone,” she said softly, “and something happens—”

“It won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

Kanata leaned in just enough for her to hear him over her own breath. “That’s why I’m going.”

Silence.

Godou cleared her throat nervously. “Maybe… maybe we all go? Strength in—”

“No,” Kanata said again.

Final.

He looked at Kanami next.

She didn’t yell.

That hurt more.

“Be careful,” she said. “That’s all I’m asking.”

Kanata nodded once.

Then he was gone.

Outside, he mounted a police bike, engine roaring to life too loud for comfort.

The headlight cut through the dark like a blade.

Takiya watched him ride off, fists clenched, chest tight.

Serizawa clicked her tongue. “Idiot hero.”

Kanami pulled Koko closer.

Godou stared at the doorway. “I don’t like this chapter.”

The engine faded into the city.

And for the first time, Kanata Yukimura chose a path without consensus.

Without backup.

Without permission.

The group was still together.

But the distance had already begun.
