Chapter 0:

Just a normal day...

I collect freaks so you don't need to!

“*Cough Cough* BLERGH! Grammie, can you repeat that one more time!”

“Oh dearie, you’ll make a wonderful astronaut someday.”

“Grammie, did you forget to take your pills again?”

Well that’s one way to spit out your orange juice, and I was enjoying my breakfast too. Oh yeah! I know what you’re thinking, what a rude thing to say to your grandmother! Well let me be the first one to tell you this, DON’T JUDGE ME!

In the first place, Grammie has this strange habit of telling me I’d be wonderful at different things. Yesterday I would be a great ballerina, the day before I was a chef, the day before that I was a doctor, and before that I was president. I’m grateful that Grammie has such high hopes for me, but even I have my limits. Although, maybe it would be a nice change of pace to-No, I can’t. Who’ll take care of them if I leave.

“Hey Grammie, how’s Zoe this morning?”

“Her fever went down, hopefully she’ll be up and moving around soon.”

That’s a relief, Zoe is my little sister. Her constitution has always been weak, so from time to time she’d end up getting a fever. With her and Grammie like this I can’t just up and leave them. After all, they’re all the family I’ve got left.

“Honey, I promise not to bother you anymore. But you need to ask yourself honey, what is it that you want to do with your life?”

“...I just want to live a normal life with you and Zoe.”

“Sweet heart…”

Please don’t look at me like that Grammie, I don’t need my own grandmother to pity me. Besides I’m not lying, all I want is to try to live a normal life. I think that’s a life mom and dad can be proud of too. Well I think it’s about time to head for school.

“Make sure to watch Zoe Grammie, I’m off to school now.”

“Hmmm, you’re off to school today? Didn’t you say you hated school?”

“BYE BYE NOW!”

I found myself shuffling the remainder of my scrambled eggs into my mouth and finishing it off with orange juice. I then grabbed my book bag and ran out the door, I could really use some fresh air right now.

***

So here I am a twelve year old girl named Honey Powell, and I’m currently being watched. No, that can’t be right? I know everyone in town and there shouldn’t be any weirdos around right? It can’t be the cops showing up to take me to school either, we live in the sticks afterall so no one really cares. Grammie was right about one thing, I hate school! Especially because that one jerk is gonna be there! That said, why does it feel like someone is watching me? And why is this feeling of dread washing over me right now? Nope, I’m not engaging with this any further! I’m going to go to my favorite spot and then I’ll-

“Huh?”

There’s no way right, yeah there’s no way I’m seeing what I’m seeing right?

“...Density, size, smell…”

In front of me was a grown man wearing what looked like a lab coat. He was on the ground on all fours, staring at what seemed to be dog poop. Alright I take back what I said, looks like my town has a new weirdo. Well at least things can’t get any-

“THIS WON’T DO AT ALL!”

“Eek!”

“In order to find out what exact creature this came from, I must call upon desperate measures. Time for a taste test.”

What? I know this lunatic isn’t planning to do what I think he’s about to do right? I closed my eyes and nodded hoping I misheard things. Upon opening them, I saw the stranger scoop the poop into his hands and stare at it with glee. Oh dear lord, he’s actually going to do it!

“Such a rich texture and aroma, I hope it taste nutty. DOWN THE HATCH-”

“What The Heck Are You Doing Mister!”

I couldn’t bare to watch so I stopped him, just where did this weirdo come from. If only I knew back then, that the moment I talked to this man sealed my fate. I threw my chance of having a quiet life out the window.
