Chapter 19:
Love, Bites and Bytes
Okay. You saved me. Now let's WIN this.
Mio, bleeding and exhausted, slumped against the wall. How? He's stronger, faster, more experienced…
But you're smarter. And we're a team now. Even through the pain, his determination was solid. Steady. I've been preparing for this.
Preparing?
I've been researching. For months. A pause. Vampire combat videos. Gaming strategy. I know I can't fight him. But I can coach you.
Despite everything, the pain, the exhaustion, the impossible odds; she almost laughed. You've been studying?
I told you I take this seriously. His voice was firm. I can see things you can't. Patterns. Weaknesses. Trust me?
Always.
Good. First rule: stop fighting his fight.
Champion was circling them. Taking his time. Enjoying the moment. "The bond is touching. But it changes nothing. You're still outmatched."
He's right, Akira continued. You can't beat him in straight combat. You're a shut-in gamer who codes hypnosis apps. He's a 800-year-old warrior. You'll never win his way.
Then what…
Fight YOUR way. Outthink him. He's getting cocky. See how he's circling? He thinks he's already won. That's exploitable.
Champion lunged.
Dodge left. He overextends on right swings—NOW!
Mio moved. Left. Champion's fist missed by inches. She felt the wind of it.
Good! Now counter low. He drops his guard after big swings.
She struck. Ribs. Not hard enough to hurt him seriously but…
Champion actually grunted. First sign of discomfort all fight.
YES! See? Patterns. He HAS them. We just need to find them.
Broadcast commentary:
Momo: "Wait... is she... learning?"
Reina: "The bond allows telepathic communication. He's coaching her."
Momo: "Her HUMAN BOYFRIEND is coaching her through a VAMPIRE DEATH MATCH?!"
Reina: "Apparently."
Momo: "That's either the most romantic thing I've ever seen or the most insane"
Reina: "Both."
Viewer count: 125,000 and climbing
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Champion recovered quickly. Attacked again. Faster. Angrier.
He's tilting, Akira's voice was calm. Clinical. Getting frustrated. When players get emotional, they make mistakes. Watch for it.
You're using gaming terms.
I’m trying to explain strategy to my gamer girlfriend! Slight embarrassment through the bond. Work with me here.
Champion's fist came at her face…
Dodge and punish the recovery frames!
She dodged. He was off-balance for half a second. She struck his kidney.
Not devastating. But it HURT him.
Good! Keep distance now—kite him!
"What?!"
Stay out of range! Hit and run! Poke damage!
"You're explaining vampire combat with GAMING TERMINOLOGY?!"
It's working isn't it?!
Despite everything, she laughed. Actually laughed.
Champion looked offended. "You DARE mock me?"
"No…sorry…my boyfriend is just…" She dodged another strike. "...explaining things weirdly…"
Through the bond: Akira's indignation. I'm helping!
You are. You really are. She felt warmth despite the pain. Keep going.
Broadcast:
Momo: "Are they FLIRTING during a DEATH MATCH?!"
Reina: "Their bond allows emotional sharing. Stress relief through humor is psychologically sound."
Momo: "That's the most romantic and UNHINGED thing I've ever witnessed"
Comments flooding: "The gaming boyfriend meta???" "This is insane" "They're actually WORKING TOGETHER" "I ship it so hard" "Is he seriously using game terms"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fight continued. Mio was still losing, still injured, still weaker, but she was ADAPTING.
Watch his footwork, Akira coached. He shifts weight to his right before charging…
Champion charged. Mio saw it coming. Dodged.
He's favoring his left side, old injury maybe? Target that.
She struck left ribs. Again. Champion's face twitched.
Good! You're applying pressure now. He's at... maybe 85% health. You're at 20% but you're LEARNING his patterns.
"Gaming percentages aren't helping!"
They help ME track the fight! Your blood sense…can you feel where he's going to move?
She focused. The blood sense, always present but usually background, she pushed it forward. Felt Champion's blood. Felt the flow, the pressure, the direction…
"I can sense his intent. Slightly. Like half a second warning."
That's HUGE. Abuse that. Predict his moves.
Champion lunged…
She felt it before he moved. Dodged easier.
THERE! See? You're reading his inputs!
"Stop with the gaming terms!"
Never! Block low—he's going for a leg sweep.
She blocked. Champion's kick met her guard instead of her legs.
Through the bond: Akira's excitement. His pride. You're doing so good. Seriously. I know you're hurt but you're ADAPTING. That's what matters.
I'm still losing.
Not as badly. And he's getting tired. Look at his breathing.
Champion WAS breathing heavier. Ancient or not, he'd been fighting hard. Using a lot of energy.
He's at 80% now. Maybe 75%. You just need to survive until he makes a real mistake.
"And if he doesn't?"
Then we go to plan B.
"What's plan B?!"
Working on it!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Champion was getting frustrated. This was taking too long. She should have yielded by now. Should have died.
Instead, she was dodging. Adapting. Learning.
"Enough," he snarled.
He moved faster. Abandoned strategy for pure aggression.
Careful! He's going berserk.
"I NOTICED!"
Champion's fist caught her shoulder. Dislocated it. She screamed.
Don't panic, reset to neutral, create distance…
She stumbled back. Champion followed. Relentless.
He's overcommitting! Watch for the opening!
Champion swung wide, too wide.
THERE! Counter now!
Mio struck. Used her one good arm. Hit his throat.
Champion CHOKED. Stumbled back.
First time all fight he'd been actually hurt.
The room went silent.
Broadcast:
Momo: "SHE HIT HIM! LIKE ACTUALLY HIT HIM!"
Reina: "Significant strike. First real damage to the Champion!"
Momo: "Current health: Champion 70%, Mio 15%"
Reina: "Those percentages are estimates…"
Momo: "LET ME HAVE THIS"
Viewer count: 175,000
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Champion touched his throat. Looked at his hand, blood, his blood.
"You... actually hurt me."
He didn't sound angry. He sounded... impressed?
"The human," Champion said, looking at Akira. "He's guiding you. Teaching you. Through the bond."
Uh oh, Akira's thought.
"That's partnership," Mio said hoarsely. "Not control. Not compulsion. COOPERATION."
"Interesting distinction." Champion rolled his shoulders. "But insufficient."
He moved again. Faster than before. Done playing.
Okay he's REALLY mad now…
"NOTICED!"
Mio tried to dodge, too slow. Injured shoulder throwing off her balance.
Champion caught her. Threw her across the chamber.
She crashed into the Elders' platform. Stone cracked beneath her.
Everything went white.
Mio!
Through the bond: his terror.
She couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. Everything hurt too much.
Get up. Please get up.
Can't... too hurt...
You can. I believe in you. You're the strongest person I know.
I'm dying...
Then take him with you. Akira's voice was fierce now. You have one more card to play. I know you do.
She knew what he meant.
The hypnosis. Combat-grade compulsion. The thing she'd never used. The thing she'd sworn not to use.
If I use it, I prove them right. That compulsion is necessary…
You prove you'll do what's necessary to survive. There's a difference. His certainty through the bond. It's self-defense. He's trying to KILL you. Ethics can wait until you're alive.
Champion approached slowly. Savoring the moment. "You fought well. Better than expected. But it's over."
Mio. Use it. I trust you.
Through the bond: absolute faith. Permission. His belief that she wouldn't abuse it. That she'd stay herself even using her most dangerous power.
She pulled herself up. One last time.
Dislocated shoulder. Broken ribs. Blood everywhere. Barely standing.
But standing.
"You're right," she said quietly. "I do have one more option."
Champion raised an eyebrow.
"EVERYONE COVER YOUR EARS!" she shouted to the room.
The Elders looked confused…
Kurogane's eyes went wide. "No, she wouldn't…"
"She's going to use THAT?!" Elder Sato stood, alarmed.
"COVER YOUR EARS!" Reina's voice came through the broadcast feed, urgent.
Champion hesitated. "What…"
Mio gathered power. Not physical power. Mental. Magical. The hypnosis she'd spent three hundred years perfecting. The compulsion she'd coded into apps, weaponized into comfort spells, mastered so thoroughly she could do it in her sleep.
Now, unleashed.
Combat-grade.
She SCREAMED.
Not a voice scream. A PSYCHIC scream.
Hypnotic compulsion amplified beyond subtle suggestion, beyond gentle comfort, into raw overwhelming FORCE.
To humans watching the broadcast, it sounded like a high-pitched bat screech. Uncomfortable but bearable.
To vampires, it felt like FEEDBACK directly into the brain. Like someone had taken every thought, every instinct, every sense and SCRAMBLED them. Disorienting. Paralyzing. Overwhelming.
Every vampire in the room FLINCHED.
Elder Kurogane stumbled, hands over ears.
Elder Sato actually dropped to one knee.
The guards collapsed.
Champion's eyes went unfocused. Mouth open. Every muscle locked.
Two seconds of complete paralysis.
Through the bond, Akira felt:
The echo of the compulsion, his human mind couldn't process it fully but he felt the POWER. The overwhelming force of it.
And simultaneously: a mental image from Mio.
A tiny bat. Screeching at the top of its lungs. Adorable and fierce.
Despite everything, he almost laughed.
That's what you think you look like?
Shut up I'm TRYING to be intimidating…
You are! But also…tiny angry bat…
FOCUS!
Broadcast:
Momo: (covering ears even through the feed) "WHAT WAS THAT…"
Reina: (also covering ears) "Combat hypnosis, master level…I didn't know she could do that…"
Momo: "IT HURTS THROUGH THE CAMERA…"
Reina: "That's her ace. The thing she never uses. Too powerful. Too close to compulsion. She's been holding back this entire time."
Momo: "She could have used that from the START?!"
Reina: "Ethics. She refuses to use compulsion except in absolute necessity."
Comments exploding: "WHAT WAS THAT SOUND" "My ears are ringing??" "She's been HOLDING BACK?!" "That was terrifying" "The tiny vampire just nuked everyone"
Viewer count: 230,000+
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two seconds.
Champion frozen. Mind scrambled. Defenseless.
Two seconds was an eternity in combat.
Mio moved.
Blood manipulation—made her own blood flow to her one good fist. Hardened it slightly. Dense. Heavy. Extra impact.
Speed—every ounce of vampire speed she had left.
Blood sense—told her exactly where his heart was. Exactly where to strike.
Precision—three hundred years of coding, of calculating, of thinking strategically.
She put everything into one strike.
Drew back her fist.
Through the bond, Akira: Finish him!
And struck.
Her fist connected with Champion's chest. Directly over his heart.
The impact…
SHOCKWAVE.
The sound echoed through the chamber like thunder.
Champion's eyes went wide.
Not a killing blow. She wasn't trying to kill. Just trying to win.
But enough.
He flew backward. Crashed into the far wall. Stone cracked. Dust fell.
Slumped.
Didn't get up.
The chamber went absolutely silent.
Mio stood in the center of the arena. Fist still extended. Blood dripping. Barely conscious herself.
But standing.
Broadcast:
Momo: "HOLY…DID SHE…"
Reina: "She won."
Momo: "SHE ACTUALLY WON?!"
Reina: "Against a 800-year-old Champion. Using strategy, partnership, and one moment of overwhelming power."
Momo: "Okay we NEED a name for that punch. That was INCREDIBLE. Chat, help me out. What do we call that?"
Comments flooding: "THE BONDED STRIKE" "FIST OF CONSENT" "PROGRESSIVE PUNCH" "REVOLUTIONARY RIGHT HOOK"
Momo: "Okay I'm seeing... 'The Fist of Consent'? Really? That's what we're going with?"
Reina: "Inappropriate."
Momo: "PERFECT THEN. Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone watching…you just witnessed THE FIST OF CONSENT!"
Reina: "I hate you."
Momo: "You love me."
Viewer count: 287,000 live
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Champion stirred. Slowly pushed himself up.
Everyone tensed.
He stood. Swaying. Hand over his chest where she'd struck. Looking at her with something that might have been respect.
"You..." He coughed. "You actually... hit me."
Not angry. Awed.
"Not with strength. With strategy. With... partnership." He looked at Akira. At the bond mark glowing faintly on both their palms. "The human guided you. Through the bond. You fought as one."
"That's the point," Mio said hoarsely. "Partnership. Not slavery. Not compulsion. CHOICE."
Champion was silent for a long moment.
Then he bowed.
Slight. But unmistakable.
"I yield."
The words echoed through the chamber.
Mio collapsed.
Legs gave out. Everything gave out. She'd been running on pure determination and now—
Akira was there.
Somehow crossed the arena before she hit the ground. Caught her. Held her.
Through the bond: relief, love, pride, exhaustion, all flooding between them.
"You did it," he whispered to her.
"We did it," she corrected. Voice barely audible. "Your coaching... the gaming terms... all of it."
"I've been practicing. Watching your streams. Playing games. Reading combat theory." He laughed wetly. "Six months ago I would never have imagined coaching my vampire girlfriend through a death match using gaming terminology."
"Six months ago I was still attacking random people during game rage."
"Look how far we've come."
Despite everything, the pain, the exhaustion, the blood; she smiled.
Through the bond, she felt: his love. Absolute. Unwavering. Proud.
And she sent back: hers. Fierce. Protective. Eternal.
"Together," she whispered.
"Together," he agreed.
Broadcast:
Momo: "And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win a vampire trial. Strategy, partnership, one terrifying bat screech, and THE FIST OF CONSENT."
Reina: "You're not letting that name go, are you?"
Momo: "Never. It's PERFECT. Also the chat is going INSANE. Someone please clip that punch. I need it as my new intro."
Reina: "They're uploading clips already. The hypnosis scream is trending. The punch is trending. The entire fight is trending."
Momo: "How many viewers did we peak at?"
Reina: "287,000 live. Currently being shared across... every platform. Vampire and human communities both."
Momo: "Boss is FAMOUS now. She's gonna hate that."
Reina: "Probably."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elder Sato stood. The chamber went quiet.
"The Council has witnessed enough."
Kurogane looked furious. But couldn't speak. The evidence was too clear. The broadcast had shown everything.
"Coven Lord Mio has proven her claim," Sato continued, voice carrying. "The blood pact, when chosen freely, creates partnership. Not slavery. The bond enabled cooperation, mutual support, strategic thinking. Not compulsion."
He looked at the other Elders. Some nodding. Some uncomfortable. Some still hostile.
But none denying what they'd seen.
"This matter requires further deliberation," Sato said carefully. "The Council cannot make immediate policy changes based on one trial. But..." He paused. "Evidence has been presented that challenges our assumptions about blood pacts. About vampire-human relationships. About the possibility of coexistence."
Not full acceptance. Not complete victory.
But a crack in the wall.
"Coven Lord Mio," Sato addressed her directly. "You have survived the trial. Your methods remain... controversial. But you have proven they can work. Under specific circumstances. With proper safeguards."
"That's all I wanted to prove," Mio said quietly. Still leaning against Akira. "That it's POSSIBLE. That we can choose differently. That love can exist between predator and prey."
"Perhaps." Sato sat back down. "This hearing is concluded. Coven Lord Mio is free to go. The Council will discuss implications and render formal judgment within the month."
Translation: they needed time to figure out what this meant politically.
But she'd survived.
Won.
Proven her point.
The chamber doors burst open. Reina and Momo rushed in. Ren phasing through the wall behind them.
Both injured. Beaten. But alive and FREE.
"Boss!" Momo crashed into them, nearly knocked Akira over. "That was the COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN! The punch! The scream! The tiny bat energy!"
"Tiny bat energy?" Mio asked weakly.
"Akira said you imagined yourself as a tiny angry bat during the scream. I have footage, it's ADORABLE and TERRIFYING."
"You were broadcasting my THOUGHTS?!"
"The bond leaked them! Not my fault!" Momo grinned. "Also you're trending on seven platforms. 'Fist of Consent' is a meme now. You're welcome."
Reina approached more carefully. Took one look at Mio's injuries. "We need medical attention. Immediately."
"Can't move," Mio admitted. "Everything hurts."
"I'll carry you," Akira said.
"You're human. I'm too heavy…"
He picked her up anyway. Struggled slightly, but managed. She was right, vampire density made her heavier than she looked.
Through the bond: determination. Love. Absolute refusal to let her walk after everything she'd done.
"Together," he said again.
"You're going to hurt your back."
"Don't care."
"Humans are so stubborn."
"Learned from the best."
Ren materialized fully. "Vehicle waiting outside. Medical supplies prepared. Extraction route secured."
"You're terrifyingly efficient," Akira said.
"I'm professional." Ren looked at Mio. "Well fought, Coven Lord. The hypnosis deployment was... impressive."
"You're not horrified I used compulsion?"
"Context matters. Self-defense against lethal threats is justified." His expression didn't change. "Also, the technique was masterfully executed. I've never seen combat-grade hypnosis of that caliber."
"Thank you?"
"You're welcome. Now let's leave before the Elders change their minds."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They walked out of the Council chamber. Past the Elders. Past the guards. Past Champion, who nodded respectfully as they passed.
Out into the corridor. Toward the exit. Toward sunlight, it was dawn now. The trial had lasted all night.
Mio couldn't walk in sunlight for long. But for a moment, stepping outside, feeling warmth on her face…
Worth it.
The broadcast had ended.
But the footage remained. Permanent. Undeniable.
287,000 people had watched her fight. Watched her win. Watched proof that coexistence was possible.
That blood pacts could be about love instead of control.
That vampires and humans could choose each other and WIN.
It was just the beginning. Just one trial. One fight. One couple.
But it was a beginning.
Found family surrounding her. Akira carrying her despite the strain. Sunlight warming her skin for the first time in months.
Through the bond: his love. Steady. Unshakeable.
"We did it," she whispered.
"We did," he agreed.
Ahead: recovery. Medical treatment. Political fallout. The Council's formal judgment. Consequences. Change. The future.
But right now: just them. Together. Alive. Victorious.
"Together," Mio said one more time.
"Together," Akira, Reina, Momo, and even Ren echoed.
Found family. Bonded. Chosen.
Ready for whatever came next.
