Chapter 42:

Chapter 41: Showdown with red rose (I)

Cold geinus: The frozen mind

The sky above the city was a metallic gray, smoke curling in jagged plumes from the buildings already damaged in the previous attacks. Sirens shrieked in every direction, drowning out the distant roar of the AI bots overhead. Derek stood on the roof of a crumbling skyscraper, his leather jacket torn and scorched from earlier battles. Beside him, Lady Venom adjusted her gloves, her purple scales gleaming faintly in the dim light.

“They’ve multiplied,” she said, scanning the streets below. “I’ve never seen this many drones in one coordinated attack.”

Derek’s jaw tightened. “Red Rose didn’t just prepare for us. He prepared for the city. Every bot, every automated vehicle, every sentry—he’s got control over all of it. We’re outnumbered.”

A massive AI warbot stepped onto the street below, its sensors glowing red. Smaller drones swarmed around it, their rapid movements forming a deadly pattern.

“Evacuation’s still happening,” Derek muttered. “But it’s chaos. People are trapped everywhere.”

“Then we make a choice,” Lady Venom said, voice firm. “Do we save civilians or go straight for him?”

Derek’s eyes flicked to the fleeing crowds. Children clutching parents, cars abandoned in panic, smoke filling the air. He swallowed. “We save the people first. Then we end this.”

A sudden explosion erupted across the avenue, sending debris and fire into the air. Derek and Lady Venom ducked instinctively, landing behind a half-collapsed wall.

“Too close,” Derek muttered. “He’s testing us… testing the limits of how much we can handle.”

From across the city, Red Rose’s voice boomed through a network of hijacked speakers. “Thunder, Venom, you can’t protect them all. Stop this futile resistance. Surrender, and maybe you’ll live to see another day.”

Derek’s fists clenched. “He’s insane,” he said. “But not unbeatable. Not if we work together.”

Lady Venom nodded, sprinting toward the nearest cluster of civilians, disabling drones with precise strikes. “Cover me!” she shouted.

Derek leapt from the rooftop, landing on a smaller drone, twisting its circuitry until it sparked and fell. Below, more civilians were being herded by automated sentries toward a collapsing overpass. Derek sprinted, dodging falling debris. “Move! Get out of here!” he yelled, pulling one family out of the path of an incoming drone.

The AI army reacted instantly, lasers cutting through the streets, striking cars and buildings. Derek ducked, using his acrobatic training to flip behind a concrete barrier. “This isn’t just about me,” he muttered. “It’s about every life he’s threatening.”

Lady Venom joined him, dragging a wounded woman into cover. “We need to split their attention,” she said. “I’ll draw some away while you clear civilians.”

“Got it,” Derek said, sprinting toward the collapsing overpass. With a running leap, he grabbed a drone midair, flipping it into a lamppost. Sparks and shrapnel flew, but the path for the civilians opened.

Suddenly, dozens of smaller drones swarmed toward Lady Venom. She darted between them, her strikes precise but taxing. “Damn it,” she muttered, deflecting a laser with her arm guard. “They adapt too quickly!”

Derek glanced back and saw more drones converging on their position. “We can’t stay here!” he shouted. “We have to fall back!”

As they regrouped on a nearby rooftop, Red Rose’s voice cut through again. “You can’t win, Thunder! Every street, every corner, every system—I control it all. This city belongs to me!”

Derek’s teeth gritted. “We’ll see about that.”

They watched as more AI bots descended, forming a wall of destruction. Vehicles were crushed, buildings shuddered, and civilians ran screaming. Derek’s eyes scanned the chaos, calculating his next move. “We can’t take them head-on,” he said. “Too many. But if we hit the central command units controlling the swarm…”

Lady Venom’s eyes narrowed. “That’s risky. Those units are heavily guarded.”

“I know,” Derek said, voice low but determined. “But it’s the only way to stop the city from being wiped out.”

He sprinted toward a narrow alley, drawing some drones’ attention. Lady Venom followed, using her agility to take out others along the way. Sparks flew as drones collided with overturned cars, fire hydrants exploded, and debris rained down from damaged buildings.

“Keep moving!” Derek shouted to a group of trapped civilians. “Head for the subway tunnel! Quick!”

One of the civilians tripped, and Derek was there instantly, lifting them and pulling them to safety. The AI bots adapted fast, recalibrating their aim, but Derek and Lady Venom moved in perfect sync, striking and dodging.

Finally, they reached the location of a central command unit—a massive tower covered with AI sensors and weaponry. Derek looked at Lady Venom. “We take it down together. That’s our chance.”

She nodded, gripping a metal beam. “On my mark.”

As they approached, the drones reacted, lasers firing in a deadly barrage. Derek rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding a beam that melted a streetlight. Lady Venom spun, slashing through the nearest drone, sending it crashing into a nearby building.

“Now!” she shouted.

Derek leapt onto the central unit, planting an EMP device, while Lady Venom disabled surrounding drones with precise strikes. Sparks erupted as the EMP activated, and the AI army froze midair before crashing into streets and buildings, powerless.

For a moment, silence fell over the city. Smoke and dust hung in the air. Civilians cautiously emerged from hiding, some cheering, some in shock.

Derek wiped his brow, surveying the aftermath. “We did it… for now.”

Lady Venom landed beside him, breathing heavily. “For now,” she repeated. “He’s still out there, and he won’t stop.”

Red Rose’s voice echoed faintly over the remaining hacked systems. “This isn’t over, Thunder! The real game has just begun!”

Derek’s eyes burned with resolve. “Then we finish it. No more running. No more hiding. I end this.”

Lady Venom placed a hand on his shoulder. “And I’ll be right here, every step of the way.”

The city was battered, smoke rising from dozens of fires, but a glimmer of hope remained. Derek and Lady Venom looked toward the horizon, knowing the final confrontation with Red Rose was approaching—and that this battle was only the first move in the endgame.
