Chapter 28:

Showdown at the Scrapyard (II)

I became a Magical Girl only to battle to the death!? Magical Girl, Arcana Majoris

The Magician Arc

The duel between a pair of magical girls rages throughout the junkyard. Changing location, attacking with timing, magical weapon and bike appearing and dispersing as needed.

The fight keeps going, shielded from view by the large walls and distance between the junkyard and anything else. Which was fortunate, because the rapid movement of the girls was proving difficult for the small fairy Nyamu to keep up with. No matter how hard he may try, keeping a protective bubble around the area is proving ineffective.

After a few moments, he looks around to lock eyes with the third girl present. Kisaragi Kurin, the Magical Girl of Hearts, currently in her normal human form. He flies over to her and began speaking rapidly, desperately trying to find her somewhere to hide and transform.

The two Magical Girls continued to clash, now squaring off in a small area that resembled a duelling zone. Starplus threw a punch that was barely dodged by Tama, who brought her knee up to slam into Starplus’ leg. Staggering, the biker grabbed Tama’s hair and heaved her in an over the shoulder throw, slamming her face down in the mud before whacking the side of her face with an elbow, pinning her down.

Starplus leaned in to grab the back of Tama’s head and cried out in pain as Tama’s teeth latched around and bit down into the biker’s hand. Hard. The pain and breaking of the skin caused Starplus to wrench backwards, and granted Tama enough space to free herself from beneath the weight of the larger girl.

The two face each other once more, one covered in mud, the other’s face smeared with dirt and sand.

Magical Girl Starplus

This battle is getting interesting. This girl is, without question, a Rogue Magical Girl. We’d been told they might be here. When I saw those creatures, it clicked, someone was controlling and conjuring them, and this girl would be behind it. My hand throbs, the tooth marks visible even with the leather glove having given a valiant defense.

I take a step back as her high kick comes towards my face, and I slam my hand into her calf to set her back. The odd look to her, the sparkling dress and almost cat-like reflexes, weren’t very consistent with her Resonance. Most Magical Girls took a form that matched them, and her look doesn’t scream ‘Necromancer’ or ‘Dark Arts’ to me.

Still, she’s attacking, and I’m defending. So she has to be the one. I punch her hard in the gut as she wobbles on the leg I hit, and send her flying across the junkyard. I approach, cracking my knuckles. I don’t wanna kill her, but I do need to beat her down until she stops fighting.

“I’m not gonna kill you if you drop form and come with me.” Starplus says, glaring at the girl, who pouts.
“Papa said that good girls do not go with strangers.” She seems… oddly serious about that. I hesitate, confused, and as if sensing that hesitation she leaps forward to slam my face with her knee, jumping up into the air. I taste blood as my nose cracks, bleeding down my lips.

“Hell… that… mean…” I mutter, glaring. My eyes are losing focus quite a bit. She may be weak, but she makes a lot of strikes at once. I’m no Inspector, I’m not someone who deals with Rogues, and even if I was this one’s feisty. I stare at her, too, and realize that she’s also out of breath, her shoulders sagging. It’s clearly wearing on her.

I have this fight. Her fighting style relies on stamina and speed, she burns a great deal of energy. I can stay in place and swing, conserve that energy until she wears herself out. Then victory’ll be mine.

Maybe not the fairest victory, and there’s a little twinge in my gut about that, but it’s a victory. She charges at me with a high kick towards my face, and I block it with my upraised arm. She spins in, another kick, and another. Each one hitting at my sides, but each one slower than the last.

Finally, there’s one that’s just a touch too slow. I grab her ankle and lunge forward, grabbing her around the throat and slamming her down into the ground again.

“Stay down!” I yell triumphantly.

Magical Girl Tama

I choke and cough out. Covered in mud, barely able to breathe without coughing. My throat hurts. My arm hurts. My leg hurts.

But… I cannot stop now. This girl is threatening Kurin-Senpai. If I let her run away with Senpai, I will never see her again. Summoning my strength, I push my shaking arms to the ground, and get back up, coughing up some blood on the way. Senpai still has not transformed. I do not know why, but until she does I must protect her.

“You…” I manage to get onto one knee, then the other, pushing myself to my feet.

“Will…” I stare down at her. Mud is obscuring one of my eyes, but I don’t have time to wipe it away. The girl is staring at me in shock.

Lose.” I spit out the last word, glaring and readying myself once more, as Rook taught me. My leg hurts when I put weight on it, so instead I lean on the other foot. It will hurt to land on it, but as long as I can keep her busy, Kurin-Senpai will be able to put her down.

I scream in rage and anger, pushing forwards with my good foot, and slam my full weight into this girl, hard. She staggers backwards under the weight, and falls down. I sail through the air behind her, landing with a roll in the dirt. Everything hurts. My arms, my legs, they won’t move.

Everything is going black, and the darker it gets, the less it hurts.

I stare. Tears are forming in my eyes. Please be okay, Anya, please… She’s not moving, lying there in the mud, but her form’s still not dropped. The other girl is wiping her chin, getting back on her feet.

“Magical Girl of Hearts… BEAT!” I yell out. White light floods me, forming around my body. I know this sequence well at this point, and prepare myself.

Within moments, I’m in my outfit. The other girl, whatever she is, has gotten to her feet. I let out a primal roar and tackle her, smashing her to the ground. Once I have her pinned down, I raise my fist and slam it hard into her face, pounding on it several times. She manages to throw me off, I wasn’t in the best of positions to pin her, raw fury was simply powering that move.

This new girl looks at me, panting and clearly half-down. I glare back in anger, and begin charging straight at her, fury overwhelming my fear at that moment.
“Resonance… BIKER!” She yells out. Her bike forms before her, and she drives it straight at me. I redirect my charge and jump out of the way as she slides past at impossible speeds. She hits a ramp and jumps out into the city, flying through the air.

The second she’s gone, my form collapses, and I return to myself. I look over towards where Anya fell, and see… not the Magical Girl, but her human self.
