Chapter 11:

11-Poor Mosquito!

Chimera-chan Can’t Be Tamed!

It was a hot, humid summer night with time around 2am. The girls were sleeping in a row on their futons.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZT.

A high-pitched sound cut through the darkness.
Chi-chan’s eyes snapped open and her tiger ears twitched violently.

Chi-chan: (Whispering) "Enemy detected."

The sound moved closer. BZZZZZZT. It hovered right above her ear.
Chi-chan waited and tensed her muscles.
WHAM!

She slapped side of her own head with full force.

Chi-chan: "Ouch! My ear ringing! Did I get it?"

Hebi-o: "No. It’s on your nose, boss."

Chi-chan: "WHAT?!"
SMACK!
Chi-chan punched herself in the nose.
Tears welled up in her eyes but mosquito flew away, laughing (probably).

The noise moved to the next futon.
Poko was sleeping on her back, mouth wide open, snoring like a tractor.
Mosquito landed on Poko’s cheek.

Chi-chan: "I will save you, Poko."

Chi-chan stood up and raised her hand.
She channeled her demonic energy into her palm.

Chi-chan: "DIE, VAMPIRE!"

SLAP!!!

The sound was like a gunshot...Poko’s cheek rippled from the impact.
Poko woke up instantly, screaming.

Poko: "GYAAAAAH! WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!"

Chi-chan: "Stay calm! It escaped! It’s fast!"

Poko: "You hit me?! My cheek is burning!"

Chi-chan: "It was a tactical strike! That is a Nether-Mosquito. If it bites you, it sucks out your IQ!"

Poko: "My IQ?! I can't afford to lose it or it will make me dumb! Transform!"

Poko grabbed a leaf from under her pillow.
Poko: "TRANSFORM! ELECTRIC BUG ZAPPER!"

POOF.

Poko transformed into a giant, glowing blue bug zapper lamp. She hovered in the middle of the room, buzzing loudly with electricity.
ZAP. ZAP.

Chi-chan: "Too bright! Turn off the blue light! Rinka will wake up!"

Poko (Lamp Form): "Come here, little buggy! Come to the light!"

The mosquito flew toward Poko but dodged the electric grid.
It flew past Poko.
It landed directly on Rinka’s forehead.

Rinka was sleeping so peacefully that she looked like a corpse in a coffin.
The tiny black mosquito sat right in the center of her pale forehead.

Chi-chan: "Target locked."

Poko (Lamp Form): "Chi-chan! Don't do it! She'll cook us!"

Chi-chan: "If I don't kill it, it will bite her. If she wakes up with an itchy bump, she will kill us....I must take action."

Chi-chan crept closer. She was sweating.
She raised her hand.
She hesitated.
She grabbed a Rolled-Up Magazine for extra range.

Chi-chan swung the magazine.
At the last second, the mosquito flew away.
Chi-chan couldn't stop her swing.

THWACK.

The magazine connected perfectly with Rinka’s forehead.

Time stopped.
The echo bounced off the walls.
Poko (Lamp Form) turned off her light in fear, Darkness returned in room.

Chi-chan: "..."

Rinka: "..."

Slowly, Rinka sat up. The magazine was stuck to her forehead due to the sweat. It peeled off slowly and dropped on ground.
A red mark in the shape of Weekly Shonen Jump was visible on her face.

Rinka: (Voice devoid of emotion) "Who."

Chi-chan: "IT WAS POKO! SHE’S A LAMP! SHE FELL ON YOU!"

Poko (Lamp Form): "LIAR! You used the magazine!"

Rinka: "I see."

Rinka stood up. In the darkness, her eyes started to glow red. The mosquito buzzed past her ear.
She snatched the mosquito out of the air with two fingers and squished it.

Rinka: "Mosquito is dead."

Chi-chan: "Ah...Let's go back to sleep—"

Rinka walked to the closet. She pulled out a Giant Fly Swatter made of iron mesh.

Rinka: "Chi-chan. Poko."

Chi-chan: "Y-Yes?"

Rinka: "Since you like slapping faces so much..."

WHACK!
Chi-chan: "GYAAAH! NOT THE BUTT! I’M SORRY!"

ZAP!
Poko (Reverted to human): "OW! I'M THE VICTIM HERE TOO!"

WHACK!
Chi-chan: "WAAH! FORGIVE ME!"

[The Next Morning]

Baku-chan woke up slowly. She rubbed her eyes.
She looked at the ceiling.

Chi-chan and Poko were stuck to the ceiling with duct tape. Their faces were swollen and red.
