Chapter 82:
Veil of the Shadow Hunter
Leegna paced around the quiet clearing, his mind sharp and focused. The air was still, save for the occasional crack of dry leaves crunching underfoot. He stopped and turned to Unlec, who sat nearby, meticulously inspecting his gun.
"Unlec," Leegna said, his voice calm yet commanding. "It's time we put our plans into motion. We've delayed long enough. We need to hunt down the Living Nightmares."
Unlec looked up, curiosity flickering across his face. "Living Nightmares? From the Time Guardians' realm?"
Leegna nodded, the weight of his conviction pressing down on him. "They're a threat we can't ignore. I need to ensure I'm ready for what's coming. The rapier I carry—it needs to be stronger. I want to forge it with the essence of those creatures. Their power is key to the next step."
Unlec raised a brow, skepticism mingling with concern. "You really think their essence can make your weapon stronger? The Living Nightmares are dangerous—they feed off fear and shadow. But if that's what you want, I'll back you up."
A thin smile tugged at Leegna's lips, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I knew I could count on you. But I'll need you to weaken them first. You'll be bait and support. Use your gun to keep them at bay while I strike them down. We need to be quick and efficient. No mistakes."
Unlec loaded his gun, the sound echoing through the still night. "Fine by me. But don't expect me to go easy on them. Those things won't stop until they're destroyed."
Leegna's eyes gleamed momentarily with a darkness he kept hidden. He relished Unlec's trust, but he wasn't ready to reveal everything—not yet. His pact with Yuj, the power of his blue eye—those secrets would remain buried for now. He felt Yuj's sharp gaze upon him, and a tension simmered beneath the surface. Leegna knew Yuj might suspect something, which made him all the more cautious.
"Don't worry, Unlec. You won't see me falter." Leegna's voice was steady, a mask for the storm brewing inside.
The following day, Leegna and Unlec departed their temporary refuge. The sky was overcast, dark clouds looming as they approached the border of the Time Guardians' realm. The landscape shifted unnaturally, reality itself bending under the weight of the ancient power that ruled this place.
Shadows flickered along the edges of the pathway, watching and waiting. Unlec tightened his grip on his gun. "Eyes open. We're not alone."
Leegna was ready. His rapier hummed faintly at his side, eager for battle. He felt the quiet strength building within him, but he suppressed it. He wouldn't rely on Yuj's power this time; he needed to depend solely on his wits and his own strength.
As they entered the realm, they encountered the first of the Living Nightmares. It was a twisted creature, a dark mass of shadow and malice, its form shifting and writhing like a nightmare come to life. Its hollow eyes fixed on them, glowing faintly with hunger.
Unlec fired the first shot, a burst of light cutting through the creature's form, momentarily weakening it. The Living Nightmare recoiled, its form flickering as it let out a guttural howl.
"Now!" Unlec shouted, firing another shot.
Leegna dashed forward, his rapier slicing through the air. The weapon cut into the creature's shadowy body, dark essence spilling out like ink. He felt the power flow through him, the rapier absorbing the creature's strength—a rush of energy that left him momentarily breathless.
He cut down another, and then another. The Living Nightmares fell swiftly before him, each one fueling the strength of his weapon. But with each strike, Leegna felt something darker within him stir. His movements grew colder, more ruthless. He took pleasure in their destruction, his focus narrowing to a single point: power.
Unlec fired again, but as he glanced at Leegna, he hesitated. There was something different about him—something brutal in the way he fought. His strikes were no longer calculated, but savage. Though Leegna's face remained calm, his eyes betrayed a different story.
Leegna noticed Unlec's gaze and quickly masked his emotions. He took a deep breath, steadying himself before turning to his ally. "Good work, Unlec. Let's finish this."
They fought through the remaining creatures until the Living Nightmares were nothing more than remnants of shadow scattered across the ground. Leegna stood over them, his rapier glowing faintly with the power it had absorbed. He could feel the difference—the weapon was stronger now, sharper, more dangerous. And so was he.
But their victory was short-lived.
As they prepared to leave, a cold wind swept through the area. The shadows around them shifted, and from the darkness emerged a new threat—agents of the Dark Embassy. Their blackened forms and hollow eyes mirrored the Nightmares, but they were more solid, more cunning.
Unlec raised his gun, ready to fire, but Leegna stopped him. "No need. They've already lost."
Before the agents could strike, the Eyeless Creature appeared from the shadows, its grotesque form silent yet deadly. It tore through the Dark Embassy's forces with ease, its power undeniable. Leegna had anticipated their arrival and prepared accordingly. The Dark Embassy's minions were no match for him or the creature that served him so loyally.
With the enemies vanquished, Leegna sheathed his rapier, his mind already calculating the next step. Unlec holstered his gun, giving Leegna a brief nod of respect. "Not bad. Looks like you're getting stronger."
Leegna smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I have to be. There's more at stake than either of us can imagine."
As they made their way back, Leegna's thoughts drifted to Yuj. He knew the demon was watching him, waiting. But Leegna wouldn't be fooled. Not this time. He would play along, gain Yuj's trust, but when the time came, he would betray them all.
That night, back at their base, Yuj appeared, his eyes gleaming with a strange light. "Leegna, I've been thinking. We need more allies. The time is coming when we can't face all of these threats alone."
Leegna met his gaze, his face unreadable. "More allies? Who do you have in mind?"
Yuj smiled, his teeth sharp in the firelight. "Let me handle that. You'll meet them soon."
Leegna nodded, hiding the growing storm inside him. Yuj was planning something—he could feel it. But he wasn't the only one. Soon, the game would change. And when it did, Leegna would be ready.
As the night deepened, Leegna withdrew into the shadows, a plan forming in his mind. In a moment of sudden unpredictability, he drew his rapier and deliberately nicked his arm, the sharp pain a welcome distraction from the turmoil within. He let a trickle of blood flow, using the injury to extend his time in this game of deception, convincing Yuj and Unlec that he was still merely a soldier preparing for battle.
Wincing but careful not to show weakness, Leegna bandaged the wound with quick, practiced movements. He knew this act of self-infliction would raise no alarms, allowing him to mask his true intentions as he plotted his betrayal. The pain grounded him, sharpening his focus for the challenges ahead.
As he returned to join Unlec and Yuj, a cold smile crept across his lips. In the shadows, he was a predator, ready to strike when the moment was right. And in the game of trust and treachery, he would be the one to outmaneuver them all.
