Chapter 9:
He’s been looking out for me my whole life.
Gu Nian moved to the city where Lu Chen lived, officially starting their life together.
On the first day, she carried a mountain of luggage into the small apartment he had rented.
Lu Chen stood in the doorway, hands resting on the frame, eyebrows slightly raised.
“You look like a moving crew,” he teased.
“I’m not leaving all my stuff for you to clean up,” Gu Nian huffed.
Lu Chen laughed and reached out to lift one of her suitcases.
The instant their hands touched, her heart skipped a beat.
“Where are you going to put all this stuff?” he asked.
“You just keep an eye on me, that’s enough.”
Gu Nian smiled, playfully winking.
At dinner, the kitchen was filled with aroma.
Gu Nian cooked pasta while he helped chop vegetables.
She accidentally added a bit too much salt.
“Oh no, I overdid it!” she frowned.
Lu Chen leaned over and tasted it.
“Perfect.”
He shrugged and playfully pinched her hand. “You always worry about messing up, but it tastes great.”
Gu Nian blushed and quickly returned to stirring.
After dinner, they curled up on the sofa.
Gu Nian rested her head on his shoulder.
“How can you look so good every single day?” she whispered, half complaining.
Lu Chen looked down at her.
“Looking good doesn’t matter. Just hold me.”
He wrapped his arm around her tighter.
Gu Nian couldn’t help laughing.
“You’re too bad.”
“Bad? I’m just willingly doing it,” he said, voice soft, like a cat purring in her ear.
At night, they each busied themselves with their own tasks.
Gu Nian painted, he worked on design revisions.
Occasionally, she wanted water, and he would hand it to her from beside him.
“When did you learn to pour water?” she teased.
“Ever since I knew you were here,” he said casually, yet her heart skipped wildly.
On weekends, they went grocery shopping together.
Lu Chen walked beside her, his fingers brushing the back of her hand. She instinctively held his.
“You’re trying to touch my hand every chance you get, aren’t you?” she whispered.
“Not every day,” he said, “every single second.”
Gu Nian couldn’t help laughing.
“Can’t you stop being so sweet?”
“Nope.”
He said, “I was born to like you.”
Before bed, half asleep, Gu Nian asked,
“Lu Chen, will you always be by my side?”
Lu Chen looked down at her, eyes shining.
“Yes.”
He said, “Forever.”
Gu Nian smiled, resting against him, feeling the same comfort as when she was a child.
Outside, the night was quiet.
Inside, their breathing and heartbeats matched perfectly.
