Chapter 2:

Chapter 2-Cryptology challenge

Cozy Weekend Writing Prompts

As I cross into the misty fall air, I wander deeper into the woods, wishing I’d worn gloves in addition to the hat upon my head. The storm is coming- I smell it in the air. But it’s not quite yet settled in, and the frost glistens from the tips of the grass as I breathe in that crisp morning air. Wonder strikes my heart as I take in my surroundings: the woods are never dull.

They’re also rarely this quiet.

I write it off as winter being cold, so even the oddest creatures are hibernating. What I’m looking for is something that most people will miss.

With the raw steak in hand, I set out to find the deerfox.

Often mistaken for either an arctic fox (where you’d find one here in the Midwest, I don’t know) or an albino deer. Deerfoxes are quaint little beings, about the size of a large canine. I’ve seen only one, once-during my childhood. Hence the ongoing hunts for similar creatures now. What’s life as a cryptozoologist without a little game of catch? My zoo won’t run itself.

Then something glitters slightly up ahead.

Like most frost creatures, a deer fox is pure white, with the only color variant being their blue or black eyes. Her tail tapers off into misty fog, barely substantial, while her pointy little face peers deceptively calmly at the world. I say deceptive because these little beasts can nip. Butterflies flutter in my stomach-there’s always that feeling for a true cryptozoologist- as I approach my quarry closer, lure in hand. Deer foxes are simple beings-food, they can be friendly. Fear or uncertainty? They’ll run away from you if you’re lucky.

This one looks pretty, a true queen of the woods. Looks like my zoo will be opening after all.

*This wasn't my best work guys, but not my worst. Just been feeling sooo tired lately. Here are the words from my prompt: strike, deceive, cheer, glistening, misty, steak, queen, butterfly
