Chapter 7:

The Fundamentals

"The Beyond Hero: Reincarnated After Five Hundred Years"

“A box…?”

Kurose murmured,
tilting his head a little.

“This is strange.”

Kurose walked toward the box.

“Did Father bring this?”

Kurose murmured,
his hand placed under his chin.

A moment later…

“Even if I open this,
nobody will get mad at me, right?”

Kurose murmured in his head.
His posture straightened.

Kurose stood in front of the box.

He opened it…

“Books?”

Kurose murmured,
his eyes narrowing slightly.

Kurose noticed.

“That can’t be it, right?”

Kurose said.
A hesitant smile appeared.

He took a book.
Opened it.

“This is a grimoire.”

Kurose murmured,
his eyes widening.

Kurose looked at the sky.

“But why didn’t I notice it before?”

Kurose wondered.
His shoulders composed.

Kurose put the book back in the box.

“Well, anyway,
I’ll ask my mother and father about it.”

Kurose remarked.
A smile appeared on his face.

Kurose left the room and went downstairs to ask.

While going downstairs,

He heard..

“Ven,
are you really alright with that?”

Hely questioned Ven.
Her jaw softened.

Ven was holding Kurose’s little sister in his arms.

“With what?”
Ven answered,
with a smile on his face.

“You know what I’m talking about.”

Hely remarked to Ven.

“If it goes like that,
he doesn’t have a chance in the Destined-One Ceremony.”

“If you keep hiding the grimoires,
he will never become something in this world.”

Hely said to Ven.
Her eyes saddened.

“Listen, Ven.
Let’s give him the grimoir-”

“No!”

Ven said to Hely.
His face straightened.

“If we give the grimoires to him,
and if he doesn’t become great like us,
people will pressure him."
Ven stated to hely.
while patting a rhythm on their little sister’s chest.

Ven stared at the night sky.

“They will bite him until he is broken.”

And…

“I don’t want that.”

“When he asked me for a sword,
I was in shock back then.”

“But I gave him the sword anyway,
to let him make memories.”

“But, honey,
did you ever ask for his wish?”

Hely asked Ven.
She squinted her eyes.

“He doesn’t have to know magic all his life.
It can lead him to a peaceful life.”

Ven answered Hely,
looking into her gaze.

“He…
does not have to stain his hands with anyone’s blood.”

Ven murmured,
averting Hely’s gaze.

In an instant..

Kurose went to the table with a serious face.

“Uh…
Father and Mother,
I-I really appreciate the thought you had for me,
to live a peaceful life.”

Kurose murmured,
staring at the floor.

“But…
I..

I want to learn magic!”

Kurose shouted,
his eyes widening.

Hely and ven stares at kurose's gaze.
Their hands trembling..

After a moment…

Ven exhaled.

Ven calmly hands out the kurose's little sister in hely's arms.

“I understand,”
Ven said.
His face steadied.

“There’s a box in the room with the window.
Pick a grimoire from the box and come downstairs.”

“I already opened the box, but I’ll go fetch one!”
Kurose remarked to Ven.
His posture eased.

“T-that’s fast,”
Ven replied.
A trace of sweat appeared.

After some moments…

“Father! Here!”
Kurose said to Ven.
His stance softened.

Ven took the grimoire from him.

“Oh! You fetched a good one!”
Ven said to Kurose.
His gaze gentled.

“Listen, Kurose!
What I’m going to tell you right now,
make sure you remember it until the end!”

“Magic is the funda—
No…
Pure mana is the fundamental thing of this world.”

“Without it, this world or us humans cannot survive.”

“If you want to learn how to use magic,
you have to first learn to control pure mana.”

“To control pure mana,
you have to first learn how to medi—”

“Father, it’s okay!
I’m already halfway to controlling it!”
Kurose said.

He lifted a hand,
with a sign of approval.

“Kurose,
please tell me later in detail
how you managed it!”
Hely said politely to Kurose,
with a hesitant smile on her face.

“Eek…
y-yes!”
He replied.

“T-that is a-amazing, Kurose!”
Ven said calmly to him,
traces of sweat appearing on his face.

“Let’s skip that.
I’ll tell you the information about grimoires,”
Ven said to Kurose.

He cleared his throat.

“There are five types of grimoires that humans created a hundred years ago.”

“Five types…?”
Kurose wondered in his mind.

Firstly—
Fundamental.

The fundamental grimoire teaches us about the nature of pure mana,
how to control it and use it to master magic.
It’s the most important grimoire to understand pure mana.

Secondly—
Novice.

After gaining knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals,
the novice grimoire teaches us how to meditate the correct way to master pure mana.

It’s the second level of grimoires,
but without it,
you cannot go to the third level.

“Kurose,
you must understand the first two grimoires completely
to ascend to the third grimoire,”
Ven remarked,
his gaze composed.

“Now for the third grimoire.”

Advanced.

After completely understanding the first two grimoires,
the advanced grimoire teaches us how to use magic.

There are five magic attributes:
Fire, water, earth, wind, and nature.

The third grimoire teaches us how to use them all.

An individual’s capability matters to use them dually
or all five elements.

“The fourth grimoire.”

Mastery.

The mastery grimoire teaches us the ways of the nature element.
It’s the strongest element among the five.

It blends every element into one.

If an individual masters the nature element
and loses control,
the nature element will turn the individual into ash.

“The mastery grimoire was the grimoire we used to defeat the great de—”

“Honey!”
Hely hurriedly said to Ven.

Hely looked into Ven’s gaze.

She nodded her head in disapproval.

“W-well…
let’s leave that story for some other time,”
Ven said to Kurose,
his face covered with traces of sweat.

“And the fifth and last grimoire.”

Transcend.

The fifth grimoire, called the strongest among the five.

It is said that the Transcend grimoire does not use the five elements of nature.

It uses other elements that are natural,
but humans declared them unnatural.

The only records of these unnatural elements
are written in the Transcend grimoires.

There are very few humans capable of reaching the Transcend level.

The last record of anyone using the Transcend grimoire
was 200 years ago.

Ven stated to Kurose.
He sighed calmly.

“Do you understand the fundamentals, Kurose?”

“Y-yes… I-I understand,”
Kurose replied.

His head was spinning.

After a moment…

Kurose cleared his throat.

“Father,
first I should learn from the first and second grimoire, right?”

Kurose said calmly to Ven.
His posture calmed.

“No.
If you are already halfway to mastering pure mana,
you can learn magic straight through the third grimoire.”

Ven replied.
He moved a hand in an approving gesture.

“Here, Kurose.”

Ven handed the grimoire back to him.

“You can do it, Kurose.”

Ven smiled.

“I have faith in you, my child!”

Hely remarked.
Her gaze softened.

“Yes!”

Kurose said.
He gazed at them, tinged with joy.

“Oh, look at the sky,
it’s dark out there!”

Hely said,
looking at the sky.

“Kurose, go to sleep,
or you’ll be late for training.”

“Yes, then,
good night,
Father and Mother.”

Kurose replied calmly.

Shortly after…

Kurose walked upstairs.

“Well, I understand the five levels of grimoires.”

Kurose murmured in his mind,
while wandering in thought.

“But why are there five?”

His eyes narrowed, tinged with questions.

“Five hundred years ago,
there was only one level of grimoire.”

“Then why are there
five types of grimoires?”

His hand moved under his chin.

“What are the primordial immortals really doing?”

“I haven’t heard of them in the present.”

His eyes widened.

“Are they…
alive or not?”

Shortly thereafter…

At Kurose’s room door,
he tapped his foot on the floor.

Kurose sighed.

“But that can’t be it.
They cannot die because they are immortals…
but…

what if…

it becomes their reason to di—”

Kurose softly slapped his own face.

“Well, let’s leave those problems to them.
They are primordial immortals after all.”

“I should focus on my training for now.”

Kurose murmured.
His shoulders relaxed.

After many months…
