Chapter 5:
Immortality Is a Lie: A Path Beyond Heaven
The decision was made without ceremony.
He was led away from the village centre with the others who had passed, it was only three children. The destined boy walked at the front, head held high, eyes gleaming with anticipation. The others followed more hesitantly, glancing back toward their families, a final goodbye before they leave.
He did not look back.
The elder walked ahead of them, hand behind his back. The five disciples walked behind the three, expressions unreadable. The rest of the procession remained at the village.
They stopped near a long wooden table set beside the temporary encampment. Inkstones, brushes and three thin jade slips were arranged across its surface.
These were made to record their names, their fate in writing.
Each child was questioned.
Name.
Age.
Origin.
The first boy to step forward was the destined one.
"Xu Yan, 12, Qingshi Village."
The brush moved as the characters were inscribed upon the jade slip, a faint glow spreading across the surface.
Xu Yan was directed aside, a slight flicker of pride appearing on his face before he suppressed it.
The second child stepped forward nervously.
"Zhou Kai, 13, Qingshi Village."
Again, the characters were inscribed as the jade slip glimmered weakly, then steadied, it was acceptable in the eyes of the elder.
Finally, the elder's gaze fell upon him.
He paused. Though the others hadn't realised it, names were anchors, binding one to records, fate and the attention of Heaven. In his previous life, he had worn many names, some burning alongside entire identities, others discarded deliberately.
This one, however, could not be avoided.
"Lin Shen, 12, Qingshi Village."
The characters were inscribed as the jade slip did not glow, nothing happening. The elder pressed a finger against the jade slip, releasing a thin thread of Qi, the jade flickering once, then dulling completely.
Lin Shen lowered his gaze.
"From this moment onward, your names are entered under the Black River Sect. Whether you rise or fall is dependent on what your next actions are."
Xu Yan stood straighter.
Zhou Kai clenched his fists tightly.
Lin Shen remained still.
Each was given a brief moment to prepare before being taken back to the village.
Villagers gathered again, their voices hushed and hurried. Xu Yan was quickly surrounded by parents, relatives, neighbors and more, each offering praise and advice. Zhou Kai received warnings and desperate instructions by his parents and other relatives.
Lin Shen stood alone, nobody approaching him.
He waited without impatience.
Eventually, the elder gestured for the three to make their way back, the disciples distributing simple rations and talismans to the townsfolk as gestures of goodwill.
As they walked again, Lin Shen felt the pressure of Heaven adjusting yet again, it was subtle yet persistent.
Xu Yan walked ahead with ease, his breathing was smooth and steps light. There was no strain in him, lacking any hesitation.
Lin Shen recognised the signs, it wasn't certainty or inevitability, but rather it was preference.
Heaven did not hide its favor, it simply assumed nobody would challenge it.
Lin Shen observed it quietly, the original timeline he had lived in had already shifted, too many variables had changed. Acting too hastily would lead to failure, so he had to observe.
Zhou Kai struggled to keep pace, already sweating from nervousness and strain. Xu Yan did not slow.
Lin Shen adjusted his breathing subtly, forcing his body back into the rhythm of the first cycle, reinforcing his body without releasing a trace of Qi, it was invisible and enough for now.
The elder stopped and turned back to the group.
"One final matter, those who fail the outer sect trials will be discarded."
Zhou Kai stiffened.
Xu Yan's expression did not change.
Lin Shen's face showed one of indifference.
They resumed walking the narrow and uneven road, dust rising beneath their steps. The river flowed alongside them, indifferent to ambition and destiny alike.
Above them, clouds drifted slowly.
Within them, Heaven watched, three names having been written into its ledger.
Two followed paths it understood, one did not.
Lin Shen was content for now, allowing Heaven to believe that he was still an irrelevant character.
The elder did not accompany them further. With a final glance toward the road ahead, he turned back, leaving the remainder of the journey to the disciples.
