Chapter 39:

The Truth

A Night is all I need (remake)

The light priest was speechless, his jaw hanging open. The light emerging from Dean lessened. Dean gaped at his hand, opening and closing it, feeling each part of his fingers in the moment. His body was light—so light, in fact, that in the next moment he was already in front of the light priest, throwing a punch. The fist connected, sending the priest flying—breaking his nose and part of his face in the process. When Dean turned around to Larah, she flinched. The light was strange enough, but Dean’s eyes—they had turned golden and black, just like the eyes of an brightborn. Moreover, Dean’s hair had turned white and grown longer. His body looked stronger.

‘Dean, what are you?’ Larah asked.

‘I... I don’t—’ Abruptly, he turned back to normal and blacked out. Larah rushed to help him, just in time to catch him, though Dean was heavy and they both crashed to the floor. Just then, Larah heard footsteps—and soon the people making the sounds. Special Force Alpha arrived, accompanied by some regular soldiers. A few had taken care of the dead light priest while the others slowly approached Larah, who had managed to lean Dean’s back against the wall.

‘Why are you pointing your guns at us?’ Larah demanded.

‘Who is responsible for the light? Is it this person here, or’—he fixed his gaze on Dean—’him?’ Larah stood. Yes, Dean’s appearance had scared the hell out of her, but that was all.

‘If you want him, then only over my dead body.’

‘I can grant you that wish, lady,’ a soldier replied, stepping closer. Suddenly, they heard wings beating. The roof above them exploded, and flames shot down—though they carefully avoided hitting anyone. From the fire, Seraphina emerged. She landed between Larah and the soldier.

‘Well, can you also take him over my dead body?’ she asked.

‘If you—’ He began to gasp for air. Seraphina’s presence was overwhelming, and she had heated up the entire area. Larah noticed a glow surrounding her—likely the reason she was still fine.

‘I see. You must be those people who have the powers of darkborns and brightborns,’ Seraphina noted. ‘I can’t think of any other reason why you’d still be standing.’

Even though the soldiers hadn’t fainted, some were close to it. The rest didn’t look much better. The tension eased when Commander Nootra arrived.
(Seraphina: He must be on Celestial level... Interesting.)

In a forest
After their victory against the Legends, the group had decided to remain in the forest for a day. They had found a deer and some water. It was night now, and everyone was asleep. Well, that changed when Dae suddenly woke up, gasping loudly. The noise woke Rayshel as well, who couldn’t resist making a comment:

‘Can’t the husband sleep without his wifey?’

‘You really are crazy, aren’t you? I can’t fathom a future where you’re my wife. Really. Damn.’

‘Then what is it? And you didn’t have to be that cold!’

‘You call that cold? Then you’ve got a lot more to see. And, I don’t know. Something happened to my brother. I don’t know what.’ He stood up. Rayshel followed and asked:

‘When do you think this will all end? I mean, I don’t really care. I get to fight strong people. Just asking.’ (Rayshel: And when it ends, will I see the truth!)

‘Well, I have no clue. First, we should head to that village one of the soldiers spotted today. If we’re lucky, we might find cars... maybe even a plane.’

‘And where will you go first?’

‘To England. To where my brother is.’

‘And your parents? Won’t they need you?’
‘Nah. They’re on a different level. Like me they used to be soldiers, though I don’t know for whom they fough. Well, I’ve never beaten them in a fight.’ He paused. ‘But what about you? Don’t you have someone?’

‘I... well, I’ll just join you. I’m fine, hahah!’ Dae looked her in the eyes. (Dae: Tears?) Then looked away and lowered his voice:

‘Well, a wife shouldn’t lie to her husband, right?’ Rayshel’s eyes widened, and a warm smile spread across her face.

‘You’re damn right,’ she replied.

Somewhere
A man and a woman were sitting before a giant gate.

‘Seems like one of the boys has awakened,’ the woman said.

‘Yeah,’ the man replied. ‘Well, starting now, it’s going to get ugly. So it’s good that this happened.’
