Chapter 6:
KILLRIGHTS
The cowboy dropped to the floor, moaning in pain. His gun spun on the ground and he tried to grab it but his hand was stopped on. He cried and his jaw was kicked. The black boot was riddled with blood. The attacker yawned. No way he was called out to handle some lowlife cowboys at some bar in a small town. He hated doing these remedial jobs. It bored him to death.
Janda looked back to see Akio entering the bar, her Death Arm, a M9, scanning the area with quick eyes. She was doing that technique they were taught in the academy that made Janda annoyed. He really hated to doing those protocol moves, it bored him to death.
"Area clear! Elliot, stand-by for Lieutenant Ursus," she said. She was shorter than Janda's staggering 6'4 height, about 5'3, and had a black perm haircut. Everything about her was just tiny, even her voice which was surprisingly deep but to him it sounded like pathetic squeaks to sound authoritative.
"Quit the protocol work, would ya?" He scratched the back of his silver-bleached hair, a large bang covering his right eye. "I beat everyone in here up."
"I'm just doing what is instructed," she replied curtly. "It's not my problem that you have issues with your job, rookie." She enunciated rookie like she was trying to put him in his place.
"News flash: No Killright does that crap." He rubbed his eyebags and looked around. Tables and stools were broken and multiple unconscious bodies laid across the floor, some on tables whilst one was stuck in the ceiling, feet hanging out. His eyes suddenly snapped open and he hurtled himself over the counter and found the cowering bartender, hiding in the far corner.
"The bad guys are gone." He made a calling gesture like someone would to a stray cat. "You can come out now."
The middle-aged woman stared at him in bewilderedness mixed with a dash of fear. She slowly got up and nearly fainted at the violent sight. Her feet stumbled and Janda caught her. Despite his tired appearance, his handsome, soft face made up for his quite carless actions. Janda Elliot had always been like that, simple, blunt and unintentionally harsh but a strong sense of judgement when his brain connected in the right place.
Akio, the short Killright, looked around on edge but then stopped after realizing Uvo was not arriving. She huffed, stomping and looked out the bar to see Uvo draining a whole barrel of beer down his mouth.
"Lieutenant!" she yelled from afar. "You can't be drinking on the job!"
Uvo Ursus licked his lips, his short cloak and light maroon beard drenched in alcohol. He let out a boisterous laugh. He was wasted. "Calm down, Akio! Come have a drink with me to loosen up those tense muscles. If you keep on stressing like that, you'll be growing wrinkles.
She closed her eyes in an attempt to hush her anger but she failed dismally. Captain Rosner, Lieutenant Ursus, Keinricht, Elliot, she was surrounded by idiots from all across the personality spectrum. Oh how she wished she was in the supreme class Primus Division. But unfortunately, despite her veteran experience of a quarter century and two months, she was moved down to Delta, for the Division filled with either spare Killrights, the unwanted or the fallen from grace stars.
Her squad in particular, the highest one, was the absolute worst. It had been six months since Elliot and Keinricht had joined them and the absolute trouble those two created was unfathomable. But, ever since the incident of Keinricht's cheek and Elliot's eye, things had changed a slight bit. Speaking of the Captain and Keinricht, they should be arriving back to HQ in a couple of days. She just hoped Keinricht didn't cause any problems.
Janda grasped her head in his palm and stared out. "What's Uvo doing now? Drinking again? He's always drinking. Alcohol bores me."
"What doesn't bore you?" Akio asked, glaring at him.
Janda thought long and hard, as if a balloon had been inflating over his head. That imaginary balloon quickly vanished and he shrugged, not able to give a concrete answer.
After a long while of dragging the ginormous, bear sized dreadlocked giant of a man, they arrived at HQ. To accurately describe HQ, it was a cathedral that was smack dab in the middle of nowhere in the vast desert lands of the Badlands. It was so huge that it could be spotted from leagues away, binoculars not even required. As the the group entered, Uvo sobered up and had a nice hop in his step appearing light despite his size.
Akio kept her formal and presentable stride in his medium sized black cloak. This contrasted to Janda's more relaxed walk, his hands in his pockets and his cloak was around his chest. What the Killrights wore underneath was a simply white long sleeve shirt and heavy duty black cargo pants with steel-toed boots.
The towering halls of HQ were filled with numerous hooded figures and staff members. Killrights passed through and Grim Reapers held their scrolls, ready to go accomplish their mission of taking their prescribed lives. She looked back to see a Grim Reapers slowly be swallowed into thin air. Akio remembered her days before becoming a Killright, a simple Grim Reaper that took only one order from The End:
Kill a life that was inscribed on the scroll.
Now, those days were far behind her. She was a Killright with many more purposes.
But killing Desperados was something she had not done since, well, she couldn't even remember. The job was mainly given to the top 3 Divisions, Tertius, Beta and Primus. Delta and the other three were simply reserves and police officers used to crack down illegal operations and disaster disturbances in towns nearby.
The passed through halls and arrived in the Delta lounge room where their Division hung around. Killrights chatted to each other and many watched television. It was warm, unprofessional and she was annoyed to death about it. She had hoped their Lieutenant would set them straight but Ursus' presence didn't change anything one bit. They were simply the most unserious Division throughout the entire Order.
Uvo waved a loud shout to his subordinates and they shouted back in greetings. He laid down on the couch and a bottle of booze was swiftly delivered to him. Akio was about to turn heel but was stopped by Janda.
"Where you going, Akio? Aren't you gonna rest or something?" Janda asked, a hand crossing over his chest to hold his shoulder.
"All we do is rest, Elliot." She turned to face him. "This Division is the sorriest and pettiest thing I have ever laid my eyes upon. Nobody takes their job seriously and despite our Captain and Lieutenant, all we get are laughs and chuckles." She walked up to him and jabbed a finger into his chest. "Your relaxed state and attitude is what'll forever make us remain this way." She hurried off. "I can't believe you're the number one draft recruit," she muttered. Janda shook his head and sighed. That Akio for you. Always wanting work but never being the one getting it done. Just a supporting role and nothing more. It was almost sad to think about, always eagerly holding that M9 just for him to swoop in and bash the ever living hell out of the enemies.
Was that what it was like to be weak? Always having the strong finish things up and never having any input yourself? Always stuck in the Catch-22 state. She seemed the most bored of them all, perhaps. Maybe she just didn't want to admit that she was bored. I mean, she was the first one to attempt to assign herself for the Brinehook Mine mission but Rosner picked Vadars over her. He wanted to broaden the rookies' experience.
Unable to come to an answer, Janda left to his room to go and rest.
An hour or so later, Akio and Uvo stood in front of the large monitor. A new mission had been assigned Delta. A Desperado spotting. Primus, Beta and Tertius had all been busy with their Desperado missions but finally, in a long while, Delta had received a Desperado mission. The top ten best Killright from Delta had been called forth. Janda, of course, stood first.
"It looks like we got ourselves a Desperado," Uvo said, smiling ear to ear as his small black sunglasses covered his eyes. He turned to the Killrights and pointed at Janda. "This a no brainer but Janda's coming with us." Some of the other Killrights groaned and other sighed with relief.
Akio tapped Uvo's hulking bicep and Uvo bent down to give her his ear.
"What is it?" he asked.
"We have got to stop picking Elliot for each of our missions, Lieutenant Ursus. He's a loose cannon and can barely retain profession. Perhaps we could go for Enda? He's experienced and reliable."
Uvo chuckled, giving himself a smirk before whispering back. "Enda is a good and nice guy, really, but Janda is simply... an prodigy. Snakelet over there just something we've never seen before."
Akio and Uvo both looked at Janda. His sharp and piercing blue eyes were watery, like an oasis. In that deep and lustrous oasis, was a slithering and whipping beast. It was a serpent that bolted and laid dormant within the endless pool of the overflowing water. An anomaly stared back at them.
A Leviathan.
