Chapter 19:

Chapter 19 – Familiar Faces on a Moving Train

Sakura Wed Haruto

The train moved steadily forward, the rhythmic sound of the tracks filling the silence between Haruto and Kenji.

Haruto sat by the window, eyes unfocused, watching the scenery blur past. His reflection stared back at him from the glass. Calm on the surface. Heavy underneath.

Kenji tried to hold it in. He really did.

For exactly three minutes.

“I’m sorry,” Kenji said suddenly, leaning back. “But I’m going to say it once.”

Haruto didn’t respond.

“Sakura is emotionally dangerous.”

Still nothing.

“She’s like a natural disaster,” Kenji continued. “Looks beautiful from far away. Destroys everything when you get close.”

Haruto sighed quietly. “Kenji.”

“I know, I know,” Kenji said, raising his hands. “I’ll stop badmouthing her.”

He paused.

“…After this one last thing.”

Haruto closed his eyes.

“She asks you to stay so she can marry another guy. That’s not confusion. That’s advanced cruelty.”

The train slowed as it approached the next station.

Kenji leaned back, arms crossed. “You didn’t deserve that.”

Haruto finally spoke. “She didn’t do it on purpose.”

Kenji looked at him sideways. “You’re still defending her.”

Haruto didn’t answer.

The doors slid open. A few passengers got off. A few stepped in.

One man paused near their row.

Haruto felt it before he saw it. That strange sense of recognition. He looked up.

The man met his eyes and smiled.

“Well,” the man said, amused, “this is unexpected.”

Haruto blinked. “Satoshi?”

Kenji straightened immediately. “Wait. You know him?”

Satoshi Kazuma laughed lightly and nodded. “Doctor Takeda. It’s been a while.”

Haruto stood slightly and bowed out of habit. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

Satoshi took the empty seat across from them. “Same. Last time we met was during… what should I call it?” He smiled. “The almost-marriage.”

Kenji’s eyes widened. “Ohhh. You’re that Satoshi.”

“That Satoshi?” Satoshi repeated, amused.

“The cool brother,” Kenji said. “The emotionally mature one. I liked you immediately.”

Satoshi chuckled. “High praise.”

Haruto felt a strange mix of relief and awkwardness. “I’m sorry about how things ended back then.”

Satoshi waved it off. “There’s nothing to apologize for. You were honest. That matters.”

Kenji leaned forward. “See? Even strangers agree you’re a good man.”

“Not a stranger,” Satoshi corrected. “A failed almost-family member.”

That earned a small smile from Haruto.

The train picked up speed again.

Satoshi studied Haruto’s face for a moment. “You don’t look well.”

Kenji answered for him. “Emotionally wounded. Recently stabbed by love.”

Satoshi nodded slowly. “I see.”

Kenji, unable to resist, told him everything. The wedding chaos. Sakura. The parents. The station scene. He didn’t exaggerate much this time. The story was heavy enough on its own.

Satoshi listened quietly, hands folded, expression thoughtful.

When Kenji finished, Satoshi exhaled.

“That sounds exhausting,” he said.

Haruto stared at the floor. “I thought stepping away was the right thing.”

“It was,” Satoshi said without hesitation.

Haruto looked up.

“You respected her fear,” Satoshi continued. “And you respected yourself. Most people fail at at least one of those.”

Kenji nodded vigorously. “See? This guy gets it.”

Satoshi leaned back. “So where are you headed now?”

“Anywhere that isn’t complicated,” Kenji replied.

Satoshi smiled. “Then you’re headed the wrong way.”

Both men looked at him.

“You’re going to the wedding,” Satoshi said.

Haruto frowned. “No. That’s not—”

“I’m not saying to interfere,” Satoshi clarified. “I’m saying to face it. Closure doesn’t come from running.”

Kenji scratched his chin. “Also, free food.”

Haruto hesitated.

Satoshi stood up and adjusted his bag. “I’m your friend. Even if you never married my sister, that didn’t change.”

Kenji grinned. “I like him more every minute.”

“And,” Kenji added suddenly, “isn’t it funny?”

Satoshi raised an eyebrow. “What is?”

“My guy here almost married your sister , Aiko ,” Kenji said. “Now Masato is marrying a girl whose name is also Aiko whose best friend is the woman who broke Haruto’s heart.”

Satoshi laughed. “That is strange.”

Kenji spread his arms dramatically. “Same bride circle. Different grooms. Must be fate.”

For the first time since the station, Haruto let out a small laugh.

The train kept moving.

And for the first time in a while, the future didn’t feel so empty.
