The service road was a forgotten scratch of asphalt that ended in a thicket of wild bushes. Mizuki killed the engine, and the world became unnervingly quiet, broken only by the distant hum of the city. Before them lay the vast, dark expanse of the metropolitan park, and rising above it to the west, a wooded ridge. A single, modern observation tower, closed for renovations, stood like a silent sentinel at its peak.
“There,” Mika’s voice came through the comms, low and final. “Clear line of sight. Isolated. That’s his nest.”
Kurumi confirmed it. “Shielded power source and a high-gain transmitter at the top. He’s waiting.”
“He’s confident,” Raze said, a cold certainty settling over him.
“Then let’s not keep him waiting,” Chisato replied, her usual smile absent, replaced by the focused serenity of the First Lycoris.
They ascended the tower’s exterior maintenance ladder. Raze led, his nanites enhancing his grip. K-1 flew ahead as a silent scout. The rooftop helipad was empty except for one figure. Stalker stood silhouetted against the moonlit sky, watching them. As they spilled onto the platform, weapons raised, he turned.
“You came as a group,” his amplified voice noted. “The variable holds. This concludes the field test.”
He raised a hand. From the shadows, four figures resolved—taller, moving with chilling precision. Advanced models. In their hands were heavy, cylindrical devices.
“Directional EMP projectors,” K-1 warned urgently.
“Take them!” Chisato yelled.
The fight was instant, brutal chaos. The drones were fast, their reactions preternatural. Chisato was a blur, dodging crackling bursts of energy. Takina’s precision fire sparked off their armor. Raze fought with everything he had, his strength meeting mechanical parity. He shattered one drone’s emitter with a kick.
They adapted, fighting as one unit. They had to break it.
“Chisato, draw the left pair! Takina, suppress the right!” Raze shouted. “K-1, crema-flash on my mark!”
Chisato danced away, pulling two drones. Takina’s fire forced the others to cover.
“Now!”
A sphere of blinding white light erupted. The drones’ optics overloaded. In that second, Raze and Chisato struck. Raze drove a fist into a knee actuator; it buckled. Chisato disarmed another. Takina vaulted cover, firing twice at point-blank range into neck cabling. The last drone turned, but Raze ripped its emitter free.
In ten seconds of violence, the advanced models were down.
They turned, breathing hard, to face Stalker. He had not moved.
“A satisfactory performance,” he said. Then, he tapped his wrist. A panel on his chest hissed open, revealing a module glowing with building blue light. “If the prototype cannot be reclaimed, the data is preserved. All contaminants… purged.”
He wasn’t aiming a weapon. The EMP emitter was in his chest. A final spiteful blast to fry every system on the roof.
The whine intensified. “He’s overloading his core! Suicide blast!” K-1 screamed.
The chip in Raze’s brain exploded.>THREAT: OMNI-DIRECTIONAL LETHAL EMP.>PRIMARY VULNERABILITY: NISHIKIGI, CHISATO (CARDIAC REGULATOR).>SECONDARY: THIS UNIT (NEURAL INTERFACE).>EVASION IMPOSSIBLE. CONTINGENCY PROTOCOLS…
Two options burned:>AEGIS-SHIELD. Create bio-armor. Protect many. Host collapse: 100%.>AEGIS-LANCE. Override limiters. Displace primary target. Host catastrophic failure: 100%.
The chip recommended the shield. Protect the many. The man—who had used the name Ren to hide, who carried the code Black Cheetah, who was called Raze by the only family he knew—chose the lance. He chose Chisato.
“AEGIS-LANCE! NOW!”
The world dissolved into a scream of overridden physics. Nanites ignited. Time fractured. The blue pulse began to expand.
He moved. A teleport. The helipad cracked. He collided with Chisato, wrapping around her as they flew through the air.
The wave of annihilating energy washed over him.A silent, digital scream. K-1’s fading cry. The chip’s frantic alerts. The nanites scrambling. Then, nothing.A void.
He hit the ground, Chisato cushioned beneath him. He felt nothing. Systems shut down.
Chisato scrambled out, horror on her face. “REN!”
He was on his back, staring at the stars. His body was gone. The machine was dying. The man had a final moment.
He turned his head an inch. He saw her tears, saw Takina standing over Stalker’s smoldering armor. He needed them to know the truth, not the mask.
His lips moved. A rustle of air.
“Raze…” he breathed, affirming the name he built, the identity he chose. The name of his true beginning. “My name… is Raze.”
The light left his golden eyes. His head lolled. The last whisper in his neural link sent three final words.
Silence.
