Chapter 32:

EP 32 - Acceptance

To Kill The Dead

The shrine felt smaller after that moment.

Like the air itself had tightened.Kanata stood near the doorway, watching thin lines of morning light creep across the floor. Dust floated in silence. Somewhere outside, a distant groan rose and fell, carried by the wind.

Takiya remained where she was, leaning against the pillar as if nothing had happened. But something had.Something heavy. She stepped away from the wall and walked toward him, boots soft against the wood.

“You’re serious,” she said. “About what you said.”Kanata didn’t turn. “I meant it.”A pause. Then she stopped beside him, close enough that their shoulders almost touched.

“I’ll fight with you,” she said calmly. “I’ll kill when it matters. When you say it matters.”He looked at her then.

“But don’t misunderstand,” she added. Her voice didn’t change. Still steady. Still honest.

“I don’t belong to you.”

He nodded once. “I know.”

“I don’t need someone to control me.”“I know.”

She watched him carefully, searching his face.

“But I’ll choose to stand beside you,” she finished. “That part is mine.”Outside, something scraped against the broken shrine doors. A low, dragging sound. More were gathering. The smell of decay drifted in slowly.Kanata didn’t move yet.

“You think I’m broken,” she continued.“I think you’re dangerous.”She smiled faintly. “That too.”A quiet moment passed between them.

Then she said something that made him look at her differently.“You don’t want a good person beside you.”He frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”

“You don’t need someone kind. Or pure. Or scared.” Her eyes stayed fixed on his. “You need someone who can walk through hell and not blink.”The words landed heavier than anything else she’d said.Because they were true.

Kanata looked down at his hands. The dried blood. The scars. The steady way they no longer trembled.“I’m not trying to save you,” he said quietly.Takiya nodded. “Good.”

Another scraping sound came from the door. A dull thud. Then another. More infected pressing against the wood, drawn by the smell.Inside, the silence deepened.Kanata lifted his gaze again.“And I’m not better than you,” he added.

That was the real acceptance. Not control. Not denial.Just truth.

Takiya’s smile faded into something calmer. Something almost respectful.“Then we understand each other.”Outside, hands began clawing harder at the doors. Wood creaked. Cracks spread along the frame.

Kanata picked up his weapon.Takiya adjusted her grip on her blade. No fear. No hesitation.Just quiet readiness

.

Inside that shrine, something had shifted. Not romance. Not loyalty.Something darker.

Two people who knew exactly what they were becoming. And chose to keep walking anyway.
