Chapter 2:
I'm Trying to Protect My Sister in an Otome Game, But the Love Interests Have Their Eyes on Me Instead!
Akito was staring at the unfamiliar male figure in the mirror. Stunned by the sight, he questioned if he was actually looking through a window instead of looking at his reflection in the mirror. His thought process didn’t make any sense, but neither did seeing someone else’s face when he was looking at his reflection. Perhaps he was dreaming? Or was it a hallucination? In order to determine whether or not he was fully conscious, he touched the blond hair tops before lightly tugging the low ponytail. Sure enough, the hair was real. Then he pinched his cheek. It hurt.
I’m not dreaming. This is me? Seriously?
He observed his surroundings, and finally noticed that it looked nothing like his actual room. As if the new furniture wasn’t odd enough, the furniture seemed more…vintage. And where was his phone? Akito could’ve sworn that he placed his phone on his desk while he studied. Curious, he returned to the desk to check the papers. There was another discrepancy. His notebooks were there, but the answers and notes that were written in them had nothing to do with the Japanese language or social studies. Even the books themselves were different. His chemistry book had been replaced by a book about alchemy. The biology book had been changed from being about nature and the animals inhabiting it to being about magical creatures.
Potions? Creatures? What are these books? I don’t remember ever buying these.
Once he looked up from the books and papers on his desk, he was able to see the outside through the window. His eyes widened in horror when he realized that the outside didn’t look like modern day Japan anymore. Instead of seeing tall buildings, he saw smaller, older houses that were scattered around. Some of these residents had horses walking around on the open grass fields. This was definitely a village. Multiple questions appeared in his head. Where was he? Who was he? Why was he brought here? And, most importantly, how was he supposed to go home?
The panic started to sink in. What about his family? Were they safe? Since his phone was missing, he couldn’t call his mother to check up on her. But his father should’ve been home from work by now. Without waiting for another second, Akito rushed out of his room to head downstairs. He searched for his father in the living room, the kitchen and even the bathroom. No sign of him anywhere. Lastly, Akito checked his parents’ bedroom - only to be met by pure shock. Their bedroom - or, rather, the room that was supposed to be their bedroom - was a study room now.
Now the panic was really sinking in. It increased even further when he noticed that their family photos were missing. The baby photos from his and Fuyumi’s childhoods. The photos from their high school entrance ceremonies. The photos from their parents’ wedding day.
All of them were gone.
But what about Fuyumi? Dashing up the stairs again, he rushed towards his sister's bedroom, which was located on the other side of the second floor.
“Fuyumi! Answer me!”
After nearly crashing into a small cabinet in the hallway, he soon reached his sister’s room. Unlike yesterday, Akito didn’t bother to knock on the door first. This was an emergency.
The bedroom door flung open.
“Fuyumi!”
Her bedroom looked strange as well - vintage furniture, and the absence of technology. Just like all other rooms in the house. But Fuyumi’s bed was in the exact same place as yesterday, albeit with a different design. There was indeed a sleeping girl in the bed, except she looked nothing like Fuyumi. The girl had long blonde hair that reached below her hips. Akito couldn’t see her face from where he was standing, but figured that her face probably looked different as well. Assuming that the girl really was Fuyumi, of course.
The girl had been asleep before he barged in, but was awakened by the loud noises and his voice.
“What…? Can’t it wait five more minutes? It’s the weekend…” the girl tiredly responded before pulling the cover over her head to protect her eyes from the bright sunlight that was peaking in through the window.
Akito’s nervousness slightly calmed down when he heard Fuyumi’s voice. Maybe this really was her after all. “This is serious” he said with a hint of urgency in his voice. “You need to get up”
The girl let out a soft sigh before removing the cover from her face. She then sat up in her bed, and rubbed her eyes.
Is this really that serious? Can’t he just ask dad for help in that case? she thought to herself.
Still feeling sleepy, her violet eyes looked towards the door. The moment she saw a stranger standing there, her mind instantly woke up. Terrified, she let out a loud screech. Then she grabbed the closest thing she could pick up; a book on her nightstand. But the book left her hand within a second - when she threw it towards him. Fortunately, Akito managed to dodge it. The book brushed against his hair as it flew past him.
“Aki! There’s a creep in the house!” she called out before reaching for another book.
He held up his hands in front of him to protect himself from more flying books. “Wait! It’s just me!”
Fuyumi paused for a moment when she heard her brother’s voice, still holding the book with a tight grip. She stared at him in confusion. The person standing by the door had no resemblance to her older brother, aside from being around the same height. Everything else about his physical appearance was different. After staring at him for a moment, she finally spoke up.
“Aki…?”
He nodded slightly, although he had been questioning the same thing ever since he saw his reflection in the mirror. Fuyumi slowly lowered the book, yet remained a bit guarded.
“You don’t look like him…” she pointed out.
That certainly was the case. However, Fuyumi clearly hadn’t noticed the sudden change from her having black hair that almost reached her chest to having blonde hair that reached below her hips. Neither had she noticed her new outfit; a light pink, long-sleeved nightgown with pretty frills on it. Its hem was almost touching her ankles. Not her usual fashion style, to say the least.
“You don’t look like yourself either”
Fuyumi was visibly confused about his statement. Her gaze slowly moved from her brother to her mirror. She then took a few hesitant steps closer towards the mirror - until she could see her own reflection. The moment she saw her new appearance, she let out a gasp and dropped the book to the floor. Covering her mouth with her hands, the now blonde girl was too shocked to speak. However, unlike her brother, Fuyumi instantly recognized the girl looking back at her in the mirror.
“I don’t believe this…” she said as she started to gently touch her face.
Anyone would’ve been shocked from seeing an unfamiliar face when looking into a mirror. That was only the beginning though. Akito still hadn’t informed her about what he had seen when he looked through the window a few minutes ago. Not to mention that their father - and even their parents’ entire bedroom - were missing.
“Yeah, it is shocking. I’m not sure what’s going on either. And I just saw-” he wasn’t able to finish before his sister suddenly cut him off.
“I’m…Herianna?”
