Chapter 2:
Future No More
Author’s Note - Time and settings will be skipping between chapters. I did tag this as a Sci-Fi series as well as a fantasy. Hopefully, it will all make sense in the end. Also, I want villains to be villainous. Apologies to sensitive readers.
Centuries passed, and the Ark continued through the blackness of space. Most slept - safe in their stasis chambers. But some of us, like Travin, stayed awake, secure in our role as protectors and maintenance workers. We had to ensure the Ark kept functioning and continued to carry the Chosen on their Mission.
Hundreds of years ago, the Great Leaders foresaw a terrible future. The Earth - our home for millenia - was about to be destroyed. Not by corporations or human greed like the stupid liberals always said - thank God Almighty those nonbelieving heathens were left behind to burn - but a comet storm. Not one huge meteor that would destroy the whole planet, but hundreds of smaller ones. Most would burn up in the atmosphere, but some were large enough to wipe out entire countries. The Great Leaders knew this was coming, and coming soon. So they engineered the Plan.
The world’s budget suddenly shifted. Money was put into education, with a focus on engineering and the sciences. New forms of power were discovered. Suddenly, the stars were in reach. And so, the Great Leaders created an Ark, like Noah of old. Something that would carry humanity to the stars. Well, the chosen ones, at least. Couldn’t let those godless liberals aboard the Ark, after all. Only those of us chosen by the Great Leaders were allowed to go.
And it’s a good thing too. No more stupid liberals whining about right and wrong. No more confusing debates over human rights. We just do what the Great Leaders tell us to do and we are rewarded. What rewards? I’m so glad you asked. The first thing they did was take away all the rights of females. Females are for breeding and serving males, exactly as God intended. Which means that if I work hard and do my job, I’ll be rewarded with a woman of my very own! Or better yet, one of those young girls. That would be perfect. Praise the Great Leaders!
Unfortunately for Travin, he was killed in a tragic factory accident and never got his reward. No nubile girl or even an experienced woman would warm his bed. Instead, it went to his supervisor. After the supervisor had modified the report about his own negligence to blame the event on Travin, of course. It’s not a crime if you don’t get caught, right? After all, the Great Leaders didn’t care who lived or died, so long as the work got done. Instead, the supervisor made sure that he was gifted a reward that night, as he did most nights. Had to make sure that the superior genes were the ones that were passed on, after all.
