Chapter 0:

Yours Truly....

Everyone Has a Role to Play. Mine Was Supposed to Be ‘Bystander #3’!

You know, it’s said that high school is supposed to be your golden years, a time you look back on fondly, secretly wishing you could relive those moments. After all, it’s when a number of people hit their peak: popularity, appearance, athletics, academics, and the entire nine yards. Meanwhile, there are those who use that time to discover, or rediscover, themselves, almost as if high school was some kind of hub for self-introspection or personal growth, which I personally doubted.

Sooooo, which group did I fall into? Honestly? Neither. It didn’t take much soul searching for me to come to that elementary conclusion, as I’ve always been more than content just coasting in my environment. The entire high-octane, drama-filled high school experience never once appealed to me, as I always preferred clear-cut peace, quiet, and overall simplicity.

No matter how I slice and dice it, the obvious term I’m getting at here is background character, and I wear that title proudly like a badge of honor. Zero shame in my game, and that’s something I’m affluent in.

I know what you’re thinking, as calling myself average would probably sound like the typical setup for someone who’s secretly amazing, so allow me to go the extra mile and clarify: I’m plain average. Utterly, unapologetically plain. A plain, average person who desires one thing and one thing only, a truly peaceful life.

Peace is what most people dream about, right? I’ve got two versions of it.

Version one: I’m lounging on a remote, but surprisingly hospitable, island, surrounded by maybe four or five incredibly saucey dames. One’s feeding me grapes, another’s massaging my feet, and the rest, well, the logistics are still under construction, but be assured the vision’s alive and well.

Version two: A little less flashy, but it’s me fading into the background like a listless extra in a movie. You know, all eyes on the stars, not a single living thing even sparing a second glance at the guy walking past them in the hallway.

So allow me to ask a question: have you ever heard someone say, “The lead actor was incredible, but man, that extra’s extra really stole the show”? Yeah. Me neither, and those who say so, I think something is genuinely wrong with their brains.

Not sure if that logic makes any sense, but it feels right to me, so there was no way for it to be a lie or even partly incorrect.

Maybe I’ll get one of those versions of peace someday, or maybe not. Something to always remember is reality tends to be crueler than fantasy, anyway.

In conclusion, I’ll keep living with grey-tinted glasses on. I mean, it’s not glamorous, but it’s sure as hell quiet, and nothing beats that at the end of the day.
