Chapter 1:
The Other Side of the Gaze
The sound of the alarm clock rang exactly at 6:00 a.m. the morning of that Wednesday of March. Emily watched the clock with some aversion. She sat on the bed and listened to the sounds of the house. Her mother was already in the kitchen. She heard how her mother cursed the coffee maker
With her pijamas, Emily went down to the kitchen. A woman, maybe in her early 30's, was in a rush. While serching for something se loooked at her daugher.
“Did you brush your teeth?” Asked Sandra to Emily. “Why are youy still in your pj? Remember that today you have to help grandma.
“Good morning to you too, mom” Emily was ignoring to the orders from her mother.
She sat, put some cereal and milk in her plate and watched her mother go to her job. Not a single goodbye was said, only the sound of the door closing. Not a problem, ots been like that since always.
Moments later, Emily changer her clothes to her uniform, she brush her hair and teeth and went to school. The only thing she wanted to stay at home and sleep more.
In big letters it can read: Technical Secondary School 23: Manuel Ávila Camacho. The dry weather of that morning was combined with the smell of the tamales that Doña Lupita was selling at the entrance of the school. Emily began to relax when he saw her friends.
“Did you make your homework?” Asked Lucia with certain attitude of grief. She stayed up late at night doing her homework.
“I am a rebellious person”, answered Naomy who was trying to imitate the way her favourite actress dress: Anahí.
A teacher shouted, reprimanding Naomy for her look, Naomy readjusted her uniform with a grimace on her face.
“That bitch”, said Naomy with a forced smile. “Yesterday I saw a group from the third curse smoking mari in the bathrooms, but she doesn’t say something about that. But I am the wrong only because I wanted to modify my uniform.
“I assure you the teacher is also a client”, replied Karla. “I think that Lupita also sells it.
“Wait, really?”, asked Naomy with curious. “How do you know that?
“Lupita sells the “mint from the gods” and also are those brownies or so Gabi told me” answered Karla. “Those horrible tamales aren’t the only thing she sells, everybody knows that."
“I would like some brownies” murmured Emily. Its been a while she didn’t eat something sweet.
The classes began short after that conversation. Emily said goodbye to her friends. She was in a separate classroom form the other 3. She hate that. The classroom, 1-B she was alone, and all her classmates were always making fun of her hobbies.
“Yesterday I saw the ghost of the math teacher", commented Eliza commented with a loud laughter.
“Yesterday I heard the lament of Little Pete” said other classmate. “That disgusting fat bastard must have had a bad time when he fell down the stairs.
Emily sat in her place, ignoring thow people insulted her. She know they were only having fun, yet she doesn’t like hw they treat her. She wished that Little Pete soon returned to classes so her classmates will pay attention to him.
The bell rang, the classes began, during them Emily fell sleep a couple of time during them. The teacher scolded her because she didn’t know how to resolve some equations that were in the blackborard. Later, in the class of phsysical education, nobody wanted Emily in their team. They were playing football and the professor put her in a team.
He hate to run in the sun, the sun of March was awful, she felt dizzy but didn’t say a word about feeling bad. “Your are not a weacking” thought Emily quoting her mother's exact words.
Finally the final bell sounded and the day finished. Emily found Doña Lupita selling those brownies at the entrance of the school.
“It’ll be $180 pesos dear for a brownie” said Lupita to Emily.
"Why so much?" Emily asked angrily as she looked at the brownies still on the small table that served as a counter.
“You know why, drear”, Lupita was irritated, she was loosing clients because a foolish girl.
“In the store near my house are cheaper, you theif.”
“In that store you are mention won't sell this brownies”, explain Lupita. “I offer special brownies for those can afford.
The day began bad and its going to be like that also in the evening. Emily was tired, and the only thing she wanted to go home and rest. She ignored her friends, and slowly walked to home. Nina, her grandmother, was waiting for her. Emily heard the sound of the television, she doesn’t understand why adults liked to watch bad news from countries she can’t point in the map.
“I’m home, grandma”. Says Emily. She closed the door and walked to her room.
“Your sandwich is on the table”, commented Nina, He didn't even take his eyes off the television. “Wash your hands and take off your uniform.”
Emily went directly to her room. She threw her backpack and complain. She lay down into her bed and closed her eyes. The phone rang.
“Emily, it’s Karla!” Shouted Nina.
“Where did you go?” Asked Karla. “Did you remembered we decided to go for an ice cream?”
“I had a bad day, I want to rest” answered Emily with calm.
“You know that sometimes God give us bad days” commented Karla with a tone that sounds like a mother. “Pray to Virgin of Guadalupe for guide.”
Emily has frustrated. Guide for what? She hang up the phone complaining about what her friend said. What’s the purpose on praying a dead person?
Her stomach remember that is time to eat, Emily watched the egg sandwich. Food is food, is something her grandmother always said, so with no motivation, Emily began eating that disgusting food while she listen to the television.
Nina kept watching the news. Wasn't there anything better to watch than stupid news about idiots who only know how to cause chaos? During the commercials, finally the attitude of Emily changed. The commercial of her favourite program appeared. She almost forgot. Every Wednesday at 11 p.m., the paranormal program, titled Night of Horror, aired on that channel.
