Chapter 1:
Deceptive eyes
"Congratulation! After twenty four hours you should be able to see clearly." The cheerful doctor told before telling the nurse to escort Rei to the post-op area.
She wore the tainted glasses, burying the feeling of dryness in her eyes.
The nurse glanced at the golden band while she sat her down. She looked around for the companion in the empty waiting area.
"Should I wait until your escort come?"
"I'm okay, thanks. I'm going home on my own though." Rei laid her back against the metal bench, she resisted the urge to groan as the annoying pain settled in her eyeballs. The nurse monitored her for longer thanks to the slow day.
Rei had no handbag on her. The gray socks on the black sneakers plus the trench coat felt slapped together yet cohesive in their own. The nurse eyed the sliver ring on her pinkie. Who doesn't know better mistakes the titanium for sliver.
"Hey pal." A man entered the waiting area with a plastic bag with the pharmacy's logo on it. He walked to Rei, giving the nurse a greeting nod.
Rei took off the glasses, bright light perforates her pupils. She managed to get a hazy look of the circular glasses on the freshly shaved face.
"You're next." She teased.
"Are you serious? These are my whole thing, my make up if you will." He sighed dramatically, looking at the nurse with a painful shrug.
He parked his mercedes near her apartment, holding her arm while walking until he fumbled with her keys. She put the glasses on a wooden table while he pushed some unopened boxes out of the way.
He took a good look at her face.
"So no more glasses huh? You look uncanny without them."
"Guess I'll hear this a lot." She laughed, laying on the couch and fumbling with some eye drops. He helped himself to the fridge, continuing their disjointed chit chat.
"Right, did y'all found enough rooms in that hotel you wanted?" He came back to the living room with a soda can.
"Nope, I just booked in the hotel next to the event point."
"Gosh, must've been pricy."
"As long as I get that whatever thing over with."
"A hot air balloon trip. Gotta give it to the yuppies." He shrugged with a side smile.
"Should you be here anyway?"
"There's two dogs colonizing my home so it's either here or sleeping in my car. Also go to bed, don't fall asleep on the couch."
The earth spun around itself, Rei woke up to a less abrasive light creeping from the curtains. Her arm reached for the bedside table instinctively only to realize she's gonna make her first trip to the bathroom without glasses. The lack of a mundane aspect of her daily life painted a fresh layer on everything she did.
On the way to the kitchen she looked at her sleeping friend, lines of the couch printed on his face. Rei held up a laugh until her eyes registered the looming big spider above him.
A spider with three eyes glowing crimson.
