Chapter 2:
YORK
So, yeah. I was reading Chapter 1 now, and guess what? I can relate to this story.
It is about someone mad at the world. The protagonist in the story told how hard she struggled to live in the world she belongs. She was hurt by the people she met and the people she resented. But because the protagonist is also a human, she also hates herself. Ironic, isn’t it?
It is not mentioned whether the protagonist is a woman or a man. Perhaps it will be revealed in the next chapters. I simply assumed it was a girl like me because I can relate to the main character’s story, because of my past trauma.
*cellphone rings*
“Hello?” I answered the phone.
“How’re you?” It’s Mom with her soft tone.
“I’m fine.”
“Don't forget your documents.”
“I know. I’m about to leave.”
“Good girl. Good luck!” she giggled.
The call ended.
I stepped down to the living room and was surprised. The white rosebud in our flower vase had withered. If my memory serves correctly, Mom bought it this morning.
I took the flowers out of the vase. My eyes squinted when they caught something strange about the flowers.
“What the?”
The white rosebuds start changing. Its remaining petals are peeling back on its own, until I’m staring at… reddish eyeballs. Wet, bloody eyeballs, darting their gaze all over the place.
The heck is this!
I drop the flowers instantly, but they’re still looking right at me from the floor.
“Ah!”
I step back with my heart pounding.
Blood trickled from my right finger where the rose thorns stabbed me. I froze. E-Every single one of them was staring at me.
My eyes were stunned when they changed back into plain, wilted white rosebuds. I picked up the rosebuds and tossed them in the bin.
After washing my hands, I locked our house after the disgusting scene I witnessed. To forget the occurrence, I'm going to school to enroll for the next academic year. I brought an envelope with me containing my enrollment documents.
“Hestral!” My gang called and embraced me when I arrived at school.
“It’s been years!” Neilsen greeted with a big grin on his face.
He became even more tanned. He must be enjoying his sunburn—the proof he had a fun summer getaway.
“Tadaaa!” Anikka reached me.
She handed me a small brown paper bag.
I smiled secretly. "So much fun, huh?" Heck, I miss my gang.
"Let's go?" Jethro asked with a smile on his face.
The four of us went into the building where we were supposed to enroll.
Still thankful to have jerks like them.
“Isn’t that her?”
“Yeah, look at them.”
“So, she was the one who used to brag? She’s nothing compared to Bethina.”
Hearing her name alone ruins my day.
"Excuse me," I walked to the flock of students near the office where we’re supposed to enroll.
The whisperers turned around.
I faked a smile. “The thing Bethina said to you. Don’t you think she’s the real b*tch for poisoning your stinky airheads? If you’re going to talk behind my back, please… please, avoid using megaphones so I can’t hear your mouths that nothing good comes out.” I scoff. “If you adore Bethina that much, why don’t you serve your queen bee because you’re her slaves?"
“Hestral,” Jethro called.
My friends approached me.
Truth to be told, I'm a blunt person.
Bethina is poisoning their brains with false claims. This worsens the pain I feel because they used to be my friends.
Bethina, apart from bullying me, is playing dirty tricks. She vandalizes the school’s comfort rooms’ walls, cheats on every test, pays someone to do her homework, doesn’t contribute anything to her groupmates, intends to get close to her teachers to get good grades, drowns herself in luxury, and a spoiled brat. We hate each other. She is the reason why I’m like this.
"Excuses,"
Yuck! She’s wearing a pink dress with white 2-inch heels. A beige handbag and a bit of makeup.
Bethina raised an eyebrow. "Hi, Hestral!"
"Hello,"
“How’re you doin’?” she asked and parted her long, dark brown hair.
Gradually, some students gathered as if it were some sort of a show.
"I'm great!" I answered sarcastically.
“Oh? I thought you’d been… sulking?”
"Seeing your face makes me feel like I'm gonna puke." I rolled my eyes. getting her straight to the point.
“P-Puke?” she asked, frowning.
“You don't know that? Tch, you really are a brainless queen. Stop investing in your looks and start with your brain so you won’t be a laughingstock.”
“Of course, I know what that means!” she yelled.
She stepped forward and was about to push me when Jethro interfered.
“Hey, stop it,” Jethro interrupted her.
"Prince charming, huh?" she scoffed.
“Sure. Something wrong?” I insulted her.
"How dare you-" She stepped forward and raised her hands to aim for my hair to pull.
I slapped her before she could start attacking me physically. I should’ve done this before.
“Do you know what you did to me?!” she touched her left cheek.
“Yup, I slapped your arse,” emphasizing every word to provoke her more.
“You-"
“You sure about that?” I frown at her outfit. “Hmp, you're wearing a dress and heels. These rubber shoes can easily kick you.” I stomped my right foot twice.
"Are you a boy to kick me?" Scared, huh?
“Running away?" Her face is annoying. She’s all talk but can’t fight me face-to-face.
"Wait until my dad hears about this," She stepped back. She threatened me.
"Wait until my dad hears about this." I mimicked what she said with my mouth twitching to tease her.
"What do you want?"
“What do you want?” I mimicked her again.
Annoying her is fun.
“Hestral, that’s enough. We need to go to the office for enrolment.” Jethro interfered again by stopping me from teasing her.
I paused for a moment. "All right.” Bethina frowned. “Don't worry, I’ll be the one who’ll adjust ‘cause I can’t stand your face and presence anymore."
"What do you mean?"
Finally, I did it!
I left in front of her, and the crowd is looking at me, including my previous fake friends who are now Bethina’s slaves.
“Hestral b*tch! I’m not yet done with you! Hey!” Bethina called me.
Before I went down the stairs, I gazed back at Bethina.
"Badbye, Bethina!"
That’ll be my last convo with that girl. Glad we bumped into her to make a swift but best decision.
“H-Hey! We’re not done!” she shouted.
As we hastily descended the stairs, many eyes followed, but the three of us laughed.
“That was wild!” Neilsen exclaimed, holding his tummy.
“D*ng girl! That’s our girl! So proud of you.” Anikka added.
Jethro remained silent.
"That was insane. You are insane, Hestral." Neilsen murmured after we ran. We’re here outside the building where we were supposed to enroll.
“I know, hahaha! My goodness.” I gasp. “But not as insane as you!”
“The look on her face was priceless. Hahaha!" Anikka can’t hold her laughter.
Caught a glimpse of Jethro strain a smile and heave a sigh. “What about the enrollment? We left the queue, and today’s the last day.” Jethro asked worriedly.
"C’mon," Jethro initiated we go back inside the building and fall in line.
They walked. They looked back and waited for me, who remained standing outside the building.
"Umm…" I paused for a moment. "Go on, guys
"Huh?" they asked in unison.
“Actually, I made an abrupt decision earlier since I talked and met Bethina there.”
Started composing myself first before telling them this.
“What decision?” Jethro asked.
“I'm moving to another school.”
“Ehhh?!” they chorused. Oh, except Jethro.
