Chapter 2:
The Ice King is My Secret Superfan
His voice was a low, gravelly rumble that usually made freshmen drop their textbooks and run. Right now, however, all I could focus on was the fact that the tips of his ears were burning bright red.
"Exactly," I whispered, leaning across the table. I felt a sudden, reckless surge of confidence. The Ice King was at my mercy. "You want my main characters to kiss, right? You want that 'sublime emotional tension' resolved?"
Leo flinched as I quoted his own comment back to him. He looked like he wanted the floor to open up and swallow him whole. He slowly slid his phone into his leather jacket pocket, clearing his throat.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," he lied, his glare returning. It was a good glare. Cold, sharp, and entirely unconvincing given the blush still creeping up his neck.
"Leo," I said, tapping my pen against my notebook. "I saw the screen. I saw the username. SoftKitten99. If you walk away now, I can't guarantee that the entire engineering department won't find out who has been leaving me virtual flower bouquets in the comment section."
He closed his eyes. A muscle feathered in his jaw. For a terrifying second, I thought I had pushed him too far and he was going to flip the table. Instead, he let out a long, defeated sigh.
"What do you want, StarryRain?" he muttered, using my pen name like it was a curse word.
"My name is Maya. And I have writer's block," I admitted, the bravado fading a bit. "I've never been kissed. I've never even held hands romantically! Every time I try to write the scene, it reads like a biology textbook. I need... practical experience."
Leo stared at me, his dark eyes narrowing. "You want me to kiss you?"
"What? No!" I squeaked, my voice echoing slightly in the quiet zone. A librarian shushed me from across the room. I lowered my voice to a frantic hiss. "No! I mean, I need a research partner. Someone to help me act out basic romance tropes so I can understand the physical mechanics. The awkwardness. The hand-holding. The accidental eye contact."
I waited for him to laugh, or tell me I was crazy, or just get up and leave.
Instead, the Ice King did the most unexpected thing yet. He reached into his sleek, black messenger bag and pulled out a leather-bound notebook and a fountain pen. He opened it to a blank page and looked at me with the deadly seriousness of a man defusing a bomb.
"If we are going to do this," Leo said, his tone entirely professional, "we need parameters. We cannot just jump to a climax without proper narrative buildup."
My jaw dropped. "Are you... are you outlining our fake dates?"
"It’s an experiment, Maya. We need a syllabus," he stated matter-of-factly, uncapping his pen. "If your goal is to write a convincing first kiss by chapter twenty of your novel, we need to escalate the physical proximity gradually. We need to start with Level One tropes."
I stared at him. The scary, towering guy in the biker jacket was giving me a lecture on pacing in romantic literature. It was the most bizarre, wonderful thing I had ever witnessed.
"Okay, Professor Kael," I smiled, pulling my laptop closer. "What is Level One?"
Leo didn't smile back, but his eyes softened just a fraction. He wrote something down in neat, blocky handwriting.
"Tomorrow. 3:00 PM. The campus coffee shop," he instructed. "I will buy you a beverage of your choice. We will sit at a small table. And we will maintain unbroken eye contact for exactly sixty seconds while our hands accidentally brush over the sugar packets."
My heart did a strange, completely unscripted little flip in my chest.
"That sounds... incredibly specific," I managed to say.
Leo closed his notebook with a soft thud and stood up, towering over the table. He looked down at me, the terrifying Ice King mask firmly back in place—except for the softest hint of pink still lingering on his cheeks.
"It is a classic meet-cute catalyst," he said smoothly. "Don't be late, Maya. Your readers are waiting."
