Chapter 4:
The Ice King is My Secret Superfan
I took the awkwardness of our "research" and spun it into gold for Midnight Marigolds. I wrote about my heroine reaching for a quill at the exact moment the brooding duke did. I described the brush of their skin, the jolt of electricity, and the way the duke's stoic mask slipped for just a fraction of a second.
At 2:00 AM, I typed the final period, took a deep breath, and hit [Publish Chapter] on LuminaReads.
I fell asleep instantly, exhausted but victorious.
The next morning, my phone was buzzing off the nightstand. I groaned, squinting at the screen. My LuminaReads notification tab was on fire. Hundreds of comments had flooded in. The readers were losing their minds over the spark.
But I bypassed all of them, scrolling frantically until I found the familiar pastel-pink avatar.
> SoftKitten99: "Dear Author, I am writing this at 2:14 AM because sleep is now an impossibility. The incorporation of electrostatic discharge as a tangible manifestation of their nascent bond was... inspired. The pacing of the eye contact leading up to the touch was masterful. You captured the terror and exhilaration of sudden intimacy perfectly. I applaud you. (P.S. Please ensure you are getting adequate rest.)"
When I arrived at the campus quad that afternoon, I spotted Leo immediately. He was standing near the large stone fountain, arms crossed over his leather jacket, looking like a gargoyle guarding a cursed treasure. Students were giving him a wide berth, actively altering their routes to class just to avoid his line of sight.
I jogged up to him, feeling a strange flutter in my stomach that I firmly blamed on too much caffeine.
"Hey," I breathed.
Leo looked down at me. His expression was as rigid as ever, but I caught the slight tightening of his jaw. He reached into his jacket and pulled out the infamous leather notebook.
"Your latest chapter," he stated, his gravelly voice dropping an octave. "It was... highly effective. The data we gathered was put to excellent use."
"You mean you liked the quill scene?" I teased, leaning against the edge of the fountain.
A faint dusting of pink appeared on the tips of his ears. He refused to look at me, staring intensely at a pigeon waddling nearby. "The duke's internal panic was scientifically accurate to the situation. It was a successful experiment." He cleared his throat and flipped a page in his notebook. "Which brings us to Level Two."
"Oh boy. What's Level Two?" I asked, laughing. "Sharing a single strand of spaghetti? Getting trapped in a maintenance closet?"
Leo did not laugh. He looked at his notes with the grim determination of a military general planning an invasion.
"Level Two requires a shift in gravity and an invasion of personal space," he read aloud. "Trope Designation: The Loss of Equilibrium and Subsequent Physical Support."
I blinked. "You mean... the accidental trip and catch?"
"Precisely," Leo nodded. He pointed a long finger toward the pathway leading to the science building. "Tomorrow at 4:15 PM. The foot traffic will be light. There is a slightly uneven paving stone near the oak tree. You will walk past it. You will lose your balance. I will be walking in the opposite direction, and I will catch you by the waist before you make impact with the ground."
I stared at him. "You want to schedule a clumsy accident?"
"Spontaneity yields inconsistent data, Maya," he said reasonably, clicking his fountain pen closed. "We must control the variables. If you actually fall and sustain a concussion, your writing schedule will be severely delayed. I cannot allow that."
"Right. Because of the novel," I said. My voice sounded a little flat, even to my own ears.
"Because of the novel," Leo agreed. But as he looked down at me, his dark eyes lingered on my face just a second longer than necessary. "Wear comfortable shoes. I will see you at 4:15."
He turned and walked away, his heavy boots echoing on the pavement. I watched him go, a mix of amusement and sheer panic washing over me.
Tomorrow, the Ice King was going to catch me in his arms. And I had a terrible, sinking feeling that the static shock from the coffee shop was going to feel like a mere tickle compared to whatever Level Two was going to do to my heart.
What do you think of this progression? The scheduled "accidental trip" is a perfect setup for physical comedy and romantic tension!
