Chapter 40:

Epilogue: What Comes After

What Comes After

The aircraft lurched into the sky, its ascent uneven, uncertain. Ren rested his temple against the cool glass of the window. Beside him, Haruka had surrendered to exhaustion, her head heavy against his shoulder.

Through the glass, he caught a final glimpse of the mall’s skeletal remains. The landscape shifted, revealing a charred gash carved through the forest—acres of ash where flames had devoured everything. The aircraft banked gently, and Seiryo University came into view. He watched the campus shrink, until it became nothing more than a scar etched into the earth below.

Across the aisle, Aki murmured softly to three small figures tucked against her, the children he and Reina had rescued. Hayami’s fingers moved with quiet precision over fresh bandages while Sakura handed her clean gauze. Haruto and Amira had slumped together, their shoulders rising and falling in the same, slow rhythm of exhaustion.

In the last row, Lilly kept her silent vigil. Beside her, the sheet‑draped form that had once been Reina lay still.

Ren’s gaze lingered on the still outline, then drifted across the cabin, taking in what remained of their fragile group.

A peculiar weightlessness settled over him. His body ached with fatigue. His mind surrendered to stillness. His eyelids grew heavy. This time, instead of nightmares, he would dream.

Whatever came after would be up to them.
